What do you think about movies based on games?

I think as long as they choose the right game, and make a movie that has the same feeling and references to the game, things should be alright. Otherwise, it'll end up like that Super Mario movie, a total failure.

Generally speaking, they turn out horrible and have no business ever being made. That said, I still have a soft spot for the first Mortal Kombat movie, even to the point of considering it a favorite, and the Resident Evil movies were, for the most part, okay.

I don't think a video game movie would ever work (it hasn't so far). Video game last for hours, and are fun because you are actually participating. A movie would have that story shortened to fit two hours, taking out or changing a lot of elements of the story.

And the Super Mario Movie sucked.

resident evil wasn't bad imo, but in general there are not really good.

ugh... Uwe Boll. One reason, why there is no great video game based movie.

That's bullshit. The pure gouda loving cheese of it made for a hilarious movie. For video game fans and non fans.

The one good video game based movie I like is "Animal Forest: The Movie" which is based on Animal Crossing, of all things. If you don't play the game it makes no sense (and probably will bore you), but if you're a fan like me it's absolutley perfect...especially for being based on a game with no plot! And it looks beautiful.

I'd say it's the one game-to-movie that ever really worked. The whole thing is on YouTube with subtitles and there's no English dub.

I think I'm one of the three people in the world that really dug the CG Final Fantasy movie. I also enjoy Resident Evil. Out of principle I try to avoid ones along the lines of Double Dragon.

Videogame movies have put out a bit of decent mindless entertianment movies... Resident Evil & Tomb Raider franchises for example. The original Mortal Kombat was pretty true to the feel of the game and was a fun if not corny fighting flick. Speakin of corny... Super Mario takes the cake with a movie so cheesy you can't help but watch.

Hitman was another decent action flick, and the CGI Final Fantasy movie was alright... a bit slow but hey the game can be too.

Not a huge Pokemon fan myself but people forget that the movies were based on a game... no one can claim that those movies haven't been successful at the box office.

Pretty much everything else that comes to mind was terrible.

Should've left this in the other forum morbotnik but its ok~

Silent Hill is the only one I really openly enjoyed. It was very good until the last...third or so. They really fucked up on how they chose to "reveal" all the backstory to the audience. Then ending massacre was Silent Hill-ish but most uncomfortable to watch, and somewhat infuriating as to how they handled the fate of Cybil.

Resident Evil was mostly okay, the sequels not so much and I'd never want to watch them even if just to see Jill Valentine. Mortal Kombat movie was surprisingly awesome, not the sequel, and I really like Street Fighter because it is so damn bad that it's enjoyable. I've only seen the first Tomb Raider...it was actually pretty close to the feel of the games, even storywise, but it just ended up being extremely boring. I haven't watched stuff like BloodRayne, Hitman..no plans for most. Slightly worried about the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie coming out if Gyllenhaal is going to be the prince.

Super Mario Bros. movie is enjoyable for the ultra cheesiness of it. I kind of admire the dark, realistic take on the series. The only way to make a movie out of that (and most..) is animated (and the Animal Crossing movie is amazing), and I just watched a movie called Super Mario Bros.: Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! on YouTube. Surreal and actually kind of cool although Mario got pwn'd at the end by Peach. It has no subtitles but it's kind of easy to figure out what's going on, and Bowser's voice is stupid.

I think I'm one of the three people in the world that really dug the CG Final Fantasy movie.

It was okay when you stop thinking of it as Final Fantasy. Too many people were expecting something that embodied the "spirit" of the games, not to make a bad pun. They have only a few connections in general like the struggle between machinery and nature and other shit but it was otherwise a giant disappointed to the tons of people expecting magic and fantasy fighting and androgynous villains. I notice that it's usually the people that never played the games that ended up thinking it was pretty awesome. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is more what others wanted, and that movie is pure fan service goodness and is otherwise kind of crap as a movie outside of that.

I think it's interesting how Hollywood has been trying to make a good video game movie since 1993 (according to IMDB, Super Mario Bros. was the first) and still hasn't succeeded in making one that is universally agreed upon as excellent. I guess the closest one so far was Mortal Kombat, and although I liked it as a kid, watching it recently made me realize that it really isn't a whole lot better than most of the other shitty video game movies...it's basically a cheap martial arts movie that's only unique for the fact that it features costumes and certain personality quirks for its characters that are taken from a popular video game. I don't think it's impossible to make a good video game movie, it's just that no one who has attempted these movies so far has been clever enough to come up with a good story and cast, while staying true to the game at the same time.

Even the ones with big budgets, A-list casting, and completely acceptable directing have been mediocre. Honestly, in spite of the fact that I can't deny it was well-made, I thought "Tomb Raider" was one of the worst and stupidest movies I've ever seen. I think if a good video game movie ever happens, it's likely to happen in the next few years, if the very competent director currently attached to "Prince of Persia" sticks with it and Peter Jackson is ultimately involved in a "Halo" movie as he previously claimed he would be. Since they were such a positive part of my childhood and I will always have nostalgia for them, I really hope there is a good video game movie someday, preferably based on one of the games I loved growing up.

I couldn't believe it, but they actually made a "Space(D) Invaders" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100666/) movie way back when
..Anyone see it? could it be the very first Video game inspired movie? If not, what was the first?
If they ever had made a "Tetris Movie" ..I'm calling it quits!

Video games are probably the worst possible thing to base a movie on. You dont play a game for its story. Most of them have horrible stories. So why base a movie on them? Usually they have little more in common with the game then the characters names, just a really lame way to cash in on the games fanbase. So many great novels out there that could be turned into movies and they waste time on games.

I was really excited for the Halo movie. Everything they released from it was gold. I have no idea why shit like Hitman and Doom gets loads of money for production and Halo gets nothing. It would obviously make money and the people involved seemed like they had a lot of good ideas about it.

I remember being pleasantly surprised by the Mortal Kombat movie. I was glad it wasn't as bad as Street Fighter. Luckily the Street Fighter animated movie made me forget about the live action version.

I have seen that movie ages ago and I'm pretty sure that Spaced Invaders had little to nothing to do with the game Space Invaders other than a play on the name.

It looks like according to wikipedia that the Super Mario Bros. movie was the first Video Game inspired movie.

I hear there's a tekken movie coming out next year, which sounds intriguing although I can't imagine it being too good.

as for the resident evil movies, I guess they average out to be more or less ok. the first one is an alright action movie in retrospect but I was so disappointed at the time because it wasn't enough of a horror film. the second is probably my least favourite because it's kinda stuck in the middle between pleasing fans who wanted to see a survival horror type movie and between the military bio-weapons idea that is the direction the producers seem to want to take the series in. the third one surprised me and was probably my favourite actually - it was the movie that broke the series free from the shadow of the games and was a fairly intense and watchable action/zombie film.

Final Fantasy was pretty good I thought, but like Kupo said, I have never played a FF game in my life. So I had no idea what to expect, but I enjoyed what I saw.

Tomb Raider was awesome. The second one, not so much.

There are a couple of games that I would love to see made into a movie. One of the GTA games would be great, they always have great stories. I'd personally love a Vice City movie, but it would be identical to Scarface.

Also, does anyone else thing that an epic LOTR-style Ocarina of Time movie, directed by Peter Jackson, would be the best video game film of all time?

Expect a bigger box office flop than Battlefield Earth

Only movie based on games I liked were the Resident Evils.

A lot of action, and I find Milla Jovovich to be incredibly beautiful.

I think that a movie based on The Game should be made.
