View Full Version : SuperHero Movies = Overkill?

There was a time where a Superhero film was somthing unique...with original superhero movies such Howard the Duck, Superman, and the old Captain America. It was a time where the movies were spaced apart by years and years at a time. But in todays day an age its no secret that there are about 5 or so superhero films each year! Marvel Studios(thats right they even have a production company!) has announced 2 movies a year. Batman, The Hulk, Superman, and The Punisher get "retelling movies", making it more and more likely that superhero movies will never stop! Hell if Spider Man 4 bombs dont worry...there will be a "retelling, new franchise" in about 10 years. It seems as though not even Jay and Silent Bob could have seen it going this far!

That being said what do you think? Is enough, enough? I for one thing its a bit much however as long as they are good I will continue to watch.

Howard The Duck was a superhero movie?

I don't mind the seemingly never ending supply of superhero movies. With Avengers coming in a few years, things are starting to get interesting, with characters starting to make cameos in each others films.
Hell, I think DC should be getting off their asses and making more movies than just Batman and Superman.

Through out Cinema history,.... If too many Westerns, Crime Dramas, Romantic Comedies, Martial arts flicks ..Super Hero Movies, etc etc ..all at once?
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y269/gatorgod/GatorIcons/Wonders6.gif Box office Darwinism took care of things, I'm sure

i like comics a lot and some of the superhero movies are really great imo.
I really like the spider-man movies a lot, it was about time someone makes a good movie about him.
And Batman Begins is a great one too, looking forward to the next movie with him.

Of course there are also bad movies. I don't like the Fantastic Four movies or the new Superman. But these are also not really my favorite comic characters anyway.

not a fan of most superhero movies (aside from batman) but they usually make assloads of money so from a business point of view i would say it's not overkill until they stop making money

the recent influx of superhero movies means there is usually always something on which is relatively brainless and fun to watch.

in the right mood, this is good

love em, the characters are so diverse with many different stories and plots. its just like comic books in the sense your getting a new story with the character every few years just like getting a new comic every month. theres so many bad guys and twists through the years for the major heroes that the stories are seemingly limitless.

good times ahead

I am soooooo over Superhero movies, especially of the Marvel variety. I was pretty much over them circa-Spiderman 2. The only ones that interest me are Nolan's Batman films, as they more then a mindless CGI display.

I'll see Iron Man after reading the reviews and I like Downey Jnr, Watchmen might be interesting and of course Batman. Other then that I'll be avoiding the likes of The Hulk, Wolverine, and the rest of them like the plague.

Sounds more like you need to relax and learn to enjoy popcorn flicks. Nothing is better than superhero popcorn fodder.

While I personally feel they dillute a certain quality to the comics medium, I will never say no to superheroes. It's probably the most American thing about me.

I love popcorn films (see my post in the Indiana Jones thread). But theres only so many times I can watch a computer generated guy beating up a another computer generated guy and still care. The first two Reeve Superman films and Burton's and Nolan's Batman films are amongst my favorite films, so I have no problem with the genre. But they are all just starting to be the same.

i wouldn't say every superhero movie is also good popcorn entertainment.
Some of them are so stupid, it's annoying.

i think it's like every other genre. Some good ones you like, but also some you don't watch at all.

My first big superhero movie in my lifetime was Burton's Batman. And even then I've grown to appreciate how poor they actually were.

So I can understand criticism of shit like Fantastic Four and.. ugh.. Man-Thing. But I also realize that the big money maker for some of these films, are kids who were my age when Batman first came out. 1+. Granted a year old doesnt have alot of sway but they grow up to love these things and are more willing to pay for them.

But really, I guess I'm just so big on superhero shit that the amount of GOOD ones doing good for the genre outweigh the crap that gets made in its wake for me.

James Bond is in and of itself its own genre by this point. Its gone beyond simple movies and is a serial of the highest caliber.

Actually by most definitions James Bond flicks ARE super hero movies so.. you know.

Yeah, big difference. The Bond films are all the SAME series. Of course they are similar.
And also, apart from the abortion that is Die Another Day, all the stunts in Bond are done for real and by real stuntmen, that alone is worth the price of admission. Id like Superhero movies a lot more if they toned down all the CGI crap. Supermen: The Movie didnt need it to be one of the all-time best Superhero movies and is all the better for it.

James Bond is in and of itself its own genre by this pointI place JD along with Indy Jones as more in the Action/Adventure movie category ...which borders so close to "Superhero" I wont quibble about it.

But unlike James Bond, who can be replaced like Dr.Who's and nobody seems to care, ..They can make all the Young Indy, Junior Indy, Son of Indy, Cousin of Indy,...they want, I'm only in it for Harrison Ford.

technically it is 2 series now since Casino Royale was the start of a new series. Its nice when reimaginings are actually good like Batman Begins and Casino Royale (unlike Halloween).

I've grown weary of action movies in general, though I liked the Spider-Man Movies and Batman Begins. I used to like the genre a lot more when I was a kid but these days I'm rarely moved to go to the trouble of watching them while they're in cinemas. I usually catch them later on DVD if I hear good things.

Well how'd you feel about Forever and & Robin?

As for the rest of the topics: I will even put up with crappier superhero movies. I'll defend 75% of Ang Lee's Hulk to the day I die. And I actually wouldn't mind watching Iron Man on DVD even though I figured it would be corny as hell. Turns out it's pretty ok by most critics standards.

Wasn't the Ant-Man persona just a half-assed way to stay in the "heroing" game after he lost the whatever it is that made him grow, anyway

They're still making Wonder Woman? I thought that was scrapped.
And I doubt Justice League will ever be made. Which is kind of a shame. I would have liked to have seen some concept art/production pictures/footage at least, to see what it would have looked like.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is a Green Arrow movie. GA is arrested for some reason and put in a prison for superhumans, which is filled with B and C grade villains. So basically, a prison movie with superpowers.

Most of the superhero movies suck balls, especially the way filmmakers try to humanize or "add depth" to those characters.

I liked first Batman and The Incredibles, but that's it. I doubt there will be any other interesting superhero movie in the near future, unless, of course, someone would film Wo-Man.

Reread it just for kicks. He sounds almsot homophobic. he states he likes loud dumb action movies. What more could he want?

Not a fan of Superhero movies. Spiderman 1 was the last "great" one, in my opinion.
