yeah JK Simmons seems like a nice guy, and this trailer is really what a trailer should be, just a taste and not the whole movie smashed in to 2 or 3 minutes. Initially looks like a movie I would go to see, even if the Coen Bros. weren't attached. Good to see them make a dark comedy after such a dark film as No Country.

Looking forward to it. I will probably see it this weekend, but I am expecting to be disappointed. The only good part of the trailer was when the Coen's names came up. Without that, nobody would really be paying attention to this movie based on the trailer.

Saw this today. Pretty disappointing. It was a fairly clever concept and there were a few great gags among mostly mediocre ones, but overall, it was just surprisingly boring and it felt like it was dragged on despite its relatively short length. The characters were pretty realistically written and portrayed, but most were not very engaging. Brad Pitt's character was pretty amusing, I guess, and John Malkovich gave a pretty solid performance, but the best scenes were probably those featuring J.K. Simmons. C

Completely disagree. I enjoyed every second of it. It definately wasn't one of the funniest movies I've seen this year, nor was it one of the funniest by the coen brothers, but it was entertaining, and pretty much everyone gave great performances. As long as you don't go in expecting something of No Country calibour, I think you'll enjoy yourselves. B

How does it compare with Arizona and Lebowski?

bmac
09-12-2008, 08:59 PM
i liked it. it actually reminded a bit of fargo though it was much less dramatic and the plot wasn't as succinct. i enjoyed the whole cast although tilda swinton's character was basically a plot device. brad pitt's character was clearly the standout. almost everything he did made me either laugh or smile. jk simmons small role was great too. most of his lines were quality punchlines. i thought it took a bit to really start rolling and the conclusion felt a little abrupt and deflated but i'm not sure how they should have ended it differently.

to answer dude's question it is better than raising arizona (which i don't think is that great) and obviously doesn't touch lebowski. i'd say it's probably squarely in the middle of the pack of the nine or ten coen films i've seen. which isn't bad because it's the coens.

Reservoir Dog
09-13-2008, 12:39 AM
I thought it was great. It had the distict feeling of the Coen Brothers just having fun with it.

It was a regular Coen Brothers comedy. It's comedy was really dependant on the feel of the movie and the Coen Brothers are geniuses with it.

AND I MEAN SPOILER. DONT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE. Oh and Brad Pitt's death had me in tears of laughter and the image of his last moment alive was fucking priceless.

My favorite part about this was all the murmurs in the audience. People desperately trying to figure out if what they just saw actually happened. Probably my favorite part of the movie because the entire scene was just so perfectly executed.

Just saw it. I'm still trying to digest what just happened, though. The whole thing was really absurd and nihilistic (if that's a word). It was one of those movies I walked out of feeling completely speechless, despite enjoying the movie. That's the Coen Brothers for you, I guess.

Oh funny story about the screening I went to that I forgot to mention. Before the movie started, these nerdy kind of college kids came waddling in with their hands at their crotches sat down right in front of us. 5 minutes later, after a preview when the theater became completely quiet, the theater exploded with a huge crashing sound as one of them had dropped a bottle of beer. Sure enough, that horrible smell flooded the entire theater. I'm not sure how many people actually smelled it. I know all of them heard it though. Two of them (one of the two, the one that dropped it) just shrugged it off and started giggling. The third was completely mortified. I think he crapped his pants. He seriously didnt move for the rest of the time he was in the theater. Then after the movie got under way an employee came down to check whatever the hell he checks with his little red flashlight and when he was on his way back up he stopped right on the row where the kid had dropped his beer, smelled the air, waited for a second and then went on and walked back out of the theater. He obviously didnt do anything because he was a little nerdy high school sophomore, but I thought he would at least tell someone. Turns out he didnt do that either and those idiots got away with it, but just thinking of the looks on their dumb ass faces when that employee stopped right at their row made the whole ordeal enjoyable enough that the memories will stay with me every time I visit the theater. Just another reason to love this movie.

Yeah, they must have been pretty retarded. The liquor/fountain drink plan works so beautifully and sneaking in beer is just awkward.

Nothing will top the time I saw the ATHF movie. 30 min in some guy near the front lights a joint and even those at the back of the theater like myself could smell the burn. Some guy ran straight out and told the manager and some employee walked the aisle for a while and kept security at the entrance for the duration of the picture. Takes some balls to do that in a relatively full theater, though.

America: Fuck Yea!

i dont think studios care. For Spider Man 2 DVD they gave away that Mary Jane finds out Parker's Spider Man. Iron Man DVD, they give away that Stark reveals he is Iron Man. Indy 4, they give away(like its some sorta surprise) that Mutt's His Son.
