The concept is pretty interesting, but the trailer and clips I've seen haven't been very exciting or engaging. I'm definitely not waiting on edge to see it and might just wait for the DVD, depending upon how many other more interesting movies are out at the same time.

The trailer for this looked hilariously bad.
The positives? Take Me Out and Sabotage in the soundtrack. Plus, Will Smith is awesome.

it isn't a sequel, a remake, or based on any specific previous creation. the trailer is funny and interesting and it's got jason bateman in it. i'll be seeing it.

I am cautiously interested. Trailer is funny and (as previously mentioned) is an original concept. Jason Bateman definately added some carisma to the trailer as well.

Heard there were some reshoots and some elements of the story were cut to avoid an R rating, hope the film doesn't suffer, I guess I'll only watch it after seeing some reviews.
Reservoir Dog
05-29-2008, 06:50 PM
Yeah thats total bullshit. They should really just have kept the R instead of going through all this trouble.

Saw the trailer when I went to see Indy Jones. Looks like a must see summer movie!
For some reason, it makes me recall a Dave Chapelle skit where a black hobo did super feats for selfish hobo reasons. anybody remember that one?

Hancock had been reviewed by the Motion Picture Association of America twice and has both times received an R rating instead of the makers' preferred PG-13 rating to target broader audiences. Questionable elements included Smith's character drinking in front of a 17-year-old and the character flying under the influence of alcohol.does this shit really go towards rating a picture r?
billi vanilli
05-29-2008, 08:09 PM
yeah you'd sorta hope that you'd at least get a few f-bombs in there with that r rating
Clark Westfall
05-29-2008, 08:13 PM
I was skeptical when I saw the teaser, but when I saw the full trailer I became slightly interested. Like most people here, I like the concept and I'm a fan of Will Smith.
grissom
05-29-2008, 08:16 PM
that ratings system is ridiculous. there's no way drinking should be worthy of an r rating in an otherwise pg-13 film. pretty sure the target audience of this movie already realizes that people get drunk in the real world.
Reservoir Dog
05-29-2008, 09:36 PM
I think we all know how fucked up the MPAA is and all the stupid shit that goes into rating a movie. First off there are a whole bunch of retarded rules like nipples=R, boob, but no nipples = PG13 and 1 Fuck Ok, 2 Fucks R, then along with the rules, they get these mysterious film idiots and supposed parents to watch these movies and rate it on its content. Now this part is completely subjective and the difference between an R and a PG13 is whether they liked it or not or if it had a suitable ending or if it has controversial themes and they can give the film any rating they want and nobody can do a thing about it so that is why movies like Hancock are shit on by this system and movies like Narnia (which has multiple killings and a beheading) can have no trouble getting a PG rating. The whole system is bullshit and needs to be changed.
Run CMB
05-29-2008, 10:28 PM
eh, i can see the drinking relating to an R rating. i'd say it's worse to fly while drunk, never done it myself but one would assume, than to say "fuck."

It looks good. I'd probably see this in the theatre. Will Smith is always entertaining.
About the rating stuff, I heard there were some other scenes that were cut to make it PG-13. The part in the trailer were the prisoner gets he head shoved up someone's (his? I don't remember) ass now happens off camera, and a scene where Hancock orgasms and blows the roof off a trailer is cut. Yeah.
Still, thats just what I've read. I don't know if its true or not.
PMD14
05-30-2008, 11:16 AM
Those scenes would have been great but I think the scene where Will Smith stuffs the guys head up someones ass works better off camera. It kinda makes it funnier.
the idea of a homeless guy with super powers sounds pretty cool, but judging by the trailer i'm unsure whether it'll actually be a good movie or not.
TheSuperiorGerbil
05-30-2008, 04:44 PM
Sort of an off-topic post:You guys talk about the MPAA but I would like it if the system in my country was a bit similar. Instead of 4 possible ratings we have 6 and you can only go to a film that has a higher rating than your age only if the difference is between that of 2 years and your parents have to be with you. Plus the reasons don't even make sense and national movies get by really easy content-wise. And recently I noticed that somehow they managed to edit three scenes from "The Heartbreak Kid", basically by adding on black bars, without any complaints or messages telling people about that (although that movie kinda sucked).

I think it is marketed all wrong, When I first heard of this a while back it was a "superhero drama/action" starring Will Smith. And the original trailers portrayed it more as a comedy! The most recent one attached to Indiana Jones got me back into it, with more of that action aspect! Some of the crew and cast even stated that the trailers are much "friendlier" than the film itself! I am also extremely upset by the cut footage! People should keep their films the way they were made, not cut them down to fit a rating just to get more money! Damn these Hollywood boxoffice whores!

think it is a great idea to make a parody of all the superhero movies.
And Will Smith is also one of my favorite actors.

Saw it. It was good, but the whole plot twist with Charlize Theron also being super powered kinda ruined it for me. Also got real dramatic as it went on, I really liked the fun stuff with him being an asshole at the beginning and think they should've done much more of it. I like the initial concept of the drunk, jerky superhero, but figured there'd be some story problems.
Overall:
7/10

it's not really a parody.
anyway i saw this yesterday and it was pretty good. not gonna win any awards or anything but it had a few great moments. i was surprised by how vulgar it was. the end is unintentionally hilarious and retarded.
lot of funny little similarities between it and arrested development:
-both had bateman and theron
-bateman is a single father whose wife died in both
-both have a prominent character with a hook for a hand
-both involve characters going to prison (with wacky results!)
aaah! there were others but i can't remember them.
well, theron and bateman are a couple for one. and she HAS A SECRET.

Yeah... I heard a lot of word of mouth Friday & Saturday that the movie sucked and was getting shitty reviews... and that bummed me out... but I went to see it Saturday night and thought it was perfectly enjoyable.
Funny, good action, cool effects and it was cast well... not gonna win any awards or anything but just a fun summer movie.

really enjoyed it. ending was kind of, um, weird. resolution to that bank heist got a serious lol out of me. expecting this to win several awards, including an oscar for best cinematography and an mtv movie award for smith's breakthrough performance.
just came back from it. Major anti climax having the villian as the hook guy and really disliked the whole Theron concept that hit us half way. The concept was promising enough but did not like where it turned. I think if it took it self even less seriously it could've been executed far greater. 2/5.
didn't read all the posts but I hope im the first one to make this shitty pun

I was (quietly) laughing at that too. The first half of the movie, until the "plot twist", was really enjoyable and I can't see why they didn't make the whole movie out of it.I mean, they only advertised it as being what the first half was and Will Smith was still in it, it was already going to make a shitload of money.Studio pressure perharps?I didn't read much about the test screenings, only about the reshoots in May.
Eddie
07-11-2008, 09:49 PM
yeah, it was all right. didn't make me laugh as much as i thought it would, maybe because most of the jokes were in the trailer. the exciting bank heist was easily the best the movie gets: the constant awkward "good job"'s were funny and hancock solves it in the completely opposite way you'd think.
special effects were fine, will smith was fine...the music seemed especially good, though. had a different vibe than what i'm used to hearing in movies like this.
the movie almost completely falls apart in the last section, though. hancock's origin story was the most piss poor excuse for an origin story imaginable. we find out his origin, yet we still have no fucking clue what the fuck he is, where the fuck he came from, or how the fuck he came into being.
jason bateman was the absolute best thing about this movie, but that's just because i'm totally gay for him.

Just saw it, ...It was alright, an Okay movie, a little different but worth seeing at least once at the main stream theater, again at the dollar theater, and once more at home.
Did it replace Wall-E as my favorite movie this summer? ..:nuh-uh:

the trailers present the film is a much more upbeat, fun-filled adventure movie, which was entirely necessary to market it. but the film itself wasn't entirely that. and the payoff was really weak, as i stated earlier.

a fun filled adventure movie where the hero is perpetually drunk?
I dunno, I think it went a far more interesting place than any of the trailers hinted at, and the payoff was far more substantial.
Eddie
07-14-2008, 06:19 PM
the majority of the good laughs were in the trailers, no exciting villains, no overly ambitious action scenes, etc. i'm not saying the movie was terrible or that it wasn't at the very least interesting, but i think that's why most people aren't digging it.
i don't think the payoff was substantial at all...once again: what the fuck is hancock? we're not told. rip-off.
they hinted at just enough not to overengineer it. gods, angels, superheroes. I'd rather not know more because no matter when they come up with, it will never be enough of an explanation.

I came in with very few expectations and I really enjoyed it. Very refreshing idea for a superhero movie. It's too bad that a lot of people will be too caught up in their own expectations of a "summer blockbuster" to appreciate this film. Some of the camera work was crap though.
