For decades, Ed Wood's movie Plan 9 From Outer Space has reigned supreme as the most brilliantly awful movie ever made. Starring Vampira and an aged, drugged out Bela Lugosi, the 50s flick is about aliens who come to Earth and reanimate dead bodies as part of their world-domination scheme. The weird, elliptical script, bugged-out acting, and transcendently inadequate special effects helped make Plan 9 from Outer Space a movie that defined the "so bad it's good" genre. But now indie director John Johnson says he's remaking the film as a non-campy, "character-driven" move that will be "very scary." He's calling it Plan 9, or just P9. What the hell?

The aesthetics of Wood's original flick already inspired Tim Burton to make a demented biopic about the director — a spunky transvestite who took care of the mostly-forgotten Lugosi in his old age — called simply Ed Wood. Both campy and a serious, touching homage to the world Wood created with his movies, the movie earned Martin Landau an Academy Award for his portrayal of Lugosi. Is there really a need for another director to revisit Wood's greatest work "seriously"?

According to the film website:

Simply titled "Plan 9", the remake will be a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood's film without resorting to camp or parody. The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven. Johnson's goal for "Plan 9" is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but also Ed Wood's intentions when he made "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Wood's plan was to make a very scary sci-fi/horror film, and Johnson wishes to do exactly that - create a film that Wood would have enjoyed, or perhaps even made himself, if not bound by the technological limitations placed on filmmakers 50 years ago.

The remake will be released to coincide with the 50th anniversary DVD edition of the original movie.

Wow. That is so unbelievably stupid. Taking "the most brilliantly awful movie ever made" and making a "serious" version of it? Sounds like it will just end up your average crappy Hollywood movie.

I do, however, love the unimaginative name of the director, John Johnson.

"...hope that I can make a film that would be as loved by audiences today as the original was for his generation…Only this time with its true intention.” -John Johnson

Err.... Yeah... Maybe we should make a Steamboat Willie remake serious. Probably gonna be a crappy B-movie that turns out to be worse than the original Plan 9.

Wow. Possibly the single worst idea for a movie ever. There is just no need to do it, theres nothing in Plan 9 that could lend itself to a good remake. The whole charm to Plan 9 is its inept production, remake the film without that and its nothing.

If this movie ends up being good in any way, I will be surprised.

I personally would have liked to see somthin a little more creative! We all know that there is no way to remake plan 9 right? So here is a better idea...a serious FOLLOW UP yet still with an exaggerated script! I sortta was hoping to make a low budget PLAN 10, FROM OUTER SPACE...when i got some money to back it! but this remake shoots my chances to hell:(

I think the release date is kinda neat...I'll give him that much. I never saw the 2006 version of "The Omen" and probably never will, but I thought the 06/06/06 release date was so cool, it alone justified the movie's existence, whether it's good or not.

that alone was probably the entire reason for the remake

I suppose it's better than trying to remake casablanca or something

At least Casablanca is a capable movie. a remake of it would be like playhouses today staging performances of Shakespeare.

i actually think this a cool idea. better than making it outright campy

The thing is, Plan 9 is camp defined. A remake (an already campy, kitschy notion) of a camptacular picture is sure to be made of AIDS and fail.

Wow...I'm almost speechless. Remaking THE classic, THE grail of b-movies. I don't think a movie that created it's own genre could be made by anyone else but the Master. This of course is my watered down knee-jerk reaction.

I just can't believe it. I feel like a snooty purist...but I am just so disappointed. I guess I just thought that the movie would simply sit there in it's own pristine place. Waiting for the next generation to discover it and understand it for what it is. I'm peeved...peeved or not, I guess it's going to get made...the only thing to hope for is the ghosts of Ed and Maila to come back and show John Johnson how it's done!

Maybe there should be a new game thread..."Hollywood Remaking Plan 9 From Outer Space is like (fill in your own analogy)."

I'll start it off with two...

- Hollywood of today...breathing 'new-life' into Plan 9, is like Nissan bringing back the '57 Bel Air.

- A graphic art house updating the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel 'cause today's paints and computer enhanced perspectives are so much closer to Michelangelo's original idea.

O.K. I'll stop...but I'm still secretly peeved.
