haha i'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but save ferris was just a really forgettable punk/ska band from the mid 90's. it's like, the last thing in the world pitchfork would review these days, but they actually did give it a fucking 9.5 ages and ages ago. i've always thought that was funny.

Looked up that review...

"If you're lucky, really lucky in life, you might be able to occasionally catch sight of a band that has reached their perfect groove. It's when they're tight and unified, playing music for the sheer fun and love of it, far before the cynicism sets in."

Hahahahahahaha...Pitchfork has changed so much. The cynicism has definitely set in.

billy, "come on eileen" was originally by dexy midnight runners, a band from the 80s who have some cred (though I haven't listened to much of their work). Save Ferris was one of those crappy pop-punk/ska bands whose only hit was a cover of a song from the 80s.

I don't know what my favourite album from the last decade is but I know a long time ago they gave my favourite album of all time, Pet Sounds, a 7.5. The author said he'd rather listen to Loveless or OK Computer. "this style of straight- forward pop music, despite its appeal on an instinctual level, has become passe and cliched"

there's something about this i find hilarious

fritz
05-19-2008, 01:09 AM
haha. didn't they re-review nmh and give it a 10 after giving it like an 8 or something, just to be on the same page with their audience or some shit. negates the whole point of reviewing music if you're gonna go "oh everyone else thinks this is a milestone let's fix it". so gay

i guess it could've been a reissue but whatever

jase
05-19-2008, 01:17 AM
Yeah it was a re-issue. I think they originally gave it 8.7

ya I didn't really know how to articulate that they were more than just a one hit wonder of the 80s without really knowing myself the extent of their contribution to music beyond "come on eileen" other than knowing that it was something.

fritz
05-19-2008, 01:22 AM
don't know why it bothers me so much but i would respect them more if they just left it at 8.7. i think they've done this a few times

holy shit. i made myself look like an idiot twice in my own thread. not a good night for me i guess

that's kind of the point of the thread fritz. although i like pitchfork more than most of the people here, their reviews are fairly wonky a lot of the time. the fact that they gave the coast is never clear a 6.7 or whatever blows my mind.

fritz
05-19-2008, 01:58 AM
i guess. except for the people who got lucky 10's. there's lots of threads full of p4k bitching though. i mean sure they're pretty retarded but their news section is pretty useful to me

in response to fritz's frustration with the changing of the score: i really dont see a problem with re-evaluating a piece of music several years down the line to see how it has stood the test of time, and also to see what, if any, impact it has left on music or culture. I think pitchfork, or any reviewer, could rightly revise their review in light of what aeroplane has become and give it a higher score.
