Eddie

i vote for jafar

kevin
05-11-2008, 10:05 PM
uh. fritz. duh

brentholomew
05-11-2008, 10:06 PM
jafar, buh, bluemoose, torgo, fritz

my little needle, lance and nate are cool too but i tend to disagree with them more than the former list

edit: also i give props to caribou christ too, dude listens to a lot of stuff

also LOL at aso eddie

raheem
05-11-2008, 10:09 PM
fritz if you're talking about white people music made after ~1980, jafar or buh otherwise

anthony
05-11-2008, 10:11 PM
i am constantly astounded at how maybe album caribou has heard. him or jafar i guess

Eddie
05-11-2008, 10:13 PM
also LOL at aso eddie
why

also i don't know if simply disagreeing with someone else's opinions makes them less knowledgeable about music.

fritz and buh obviously have the most music and could probably name more artists than anyone else, but i basically chose people for the poll who i think could speak about music the most eloquently and intelligently in every day discussions and could probably write a bunch of 33 1/3 books or teach college courses about pop music or could be a professional music critic and things like that. plus they're the oldest and that puts them at an advantage no matter what.

anthony
05-11-2008, 10:16 PM
that's true

although i'm fairly confident jafar could pen a 33 1/3 about his asshole if he wanted to

caribou
05-11-2008, 10:23 PM
i think chest rockwell is a really underrated music bro

how many of us can say we're familiar with the works of hall & oates

raheem
05-11-2008, 10:26 PM
in terms of analytical knowledge then it's definitely jafar, that dude knows what the fuck's up in almost any musical discussion

fritz
05-11-2008, 11:50 PM
i've been sitting here for a couple minutes and i've discovered that my music taste is very racist

lock thread, archive.

Dead Nigga Storage
05-11-2008, 11:59 PM
gil. and i don't think it's really that close amongst the options.

jafar in second.

fuck the rest of 'em.

kuumuus
05-12-2008, 12:46 AM
jafar and it's not close. half the time i don't really know what he's talking about but it always makes sense on some weird, hilarious level.

i'd put most everybody else on the same plane of knowledge. some know lots about particular genres but have relatively narrow tastes, while others have limited knowledge of a wider variety of music.

brentholomew
05-12-2008, 12:49 AM
knowing a lot about obscure music and knowing a lot about playing music are two completely different things, which is why i was kind of befuddled by the thread..no offense, eddiehoss

rackpit23
05-12-2008, 03:53 AM
vote for jafar!!!!

buh
05-12-2008, 04:10 AM
i vote jafar. others also go to torgo and TIBOR. special mention goes to adam r who wins for knowing the most about cargo shorts music (metal, nu metal, grindcore, progressive atmospheric black metal, speed metal, etc)

ive never seen allsussedout talk about anything other than arcade fire, wilco, radiohead and coldplay

nathaniel
05-12-2008, 04:26 AM
haha yeah ASO on the poll made me giggle

i think chest rockwell is a really underrated music bro

how many of us can say we're familiar with the works of hall & oates

haha thanks.

not really sure how to quantify this question but I'll mention Sampson cause that guy drops some awesome knowledge in his rare appearances.

I wonder if any of the music nerds here (pretty much anyone who has posted in this thread or been mentioned in this thread) isn't the most musically knowledgable of all their real life friends.

Cerpin Taxt
05-12-2008, 08:27 AM
jafar, then nate, then buh.

fritz knows a lot about a narrower variety of music.

i'd also agree with caribou and chest rockwell.

nathaniel
05-12-2008, 08:40 AM
yeah i have a lot of friends more music-obsessed than me. one writes for av/club, most are in bands, some dj, etc

if you mean i dominate in the individual catagories of "posts the most about music on message boards," "tries to get every leaked album before anyone else," and "mountain goats," then yes, i definitely dominate my friends there

Sloppy Jimbo IV
05-12-2008, 08:46 AM
i know some shit too

like for instance did you know that beethoven was not only a movie star dog but also a composer?

that's one talented canine!

Adamm R)))
05-12-2008, 08:47 AM
special mention goes to adam r who wins for knowing the most about cargo shorts music (metal, nu metal, grindcore, progressive atmospheric black metal, speed metal, etc)

fuck yeah.

and yeah, I'm pretty sure jafar has consumed every piece of music ever produced.

:bang:
05-12-2008, 08:50 AM
haha, gil and aso hardly even post here. the other options basically ran out of interesting things to talk about music wise years ago. i mean, look at the first page of topics here

Cerpin Taxt
05-12-2008, 12:03 PM
"tries to get every leaked album before anyone else,"

really? you actually seem to be one of the most discriminating (i.e. doesn't just download to download/listen), which i would consider to be a better quality than just being "current leak know-it-all."

especially since most of the leaks here are, as has been said, kind of narrow in scope.

nathaniel
05-12-2008, 12:32 PM
yeah but i meant amongst my actual friends

most of them are still sort of iffy on leaked albums, and usually dont hear about them leaking. though they definitely have no problem asking me to send them a mediafire link when they hear i have it

gheorghe
05-12-2008, 12:45 PM
i get most of my music advice from simpsonsfan20

he knows the score

Slack Motherfucker

I have friends that are djs (I do a little myself) and in bands but I still feel like I have more knowledge of pop music than them even though I don't have the musical ability they have.

I can't believe this thread has yet to have a reference to "losing my edge"

yea, pretty much. i'm probably in the latter category. i do know more about music than anyone i know though. and i'm not "bragging", it actually kind of sucks. i very rarely find myself talking about music outside of the internet because of this.

Adamm R)))
05-12-2008, 01:37 PM
yeah, I'm pretty sure I know more about music than most other people I come into contact with too.

compared to you guys though, I clearly have more metal brainz than anyone here but I think I generally have a pretty good knowledge of music on a whole. I wouldn't call myself especially behind in what I've heard either, since my collection is 20GB+.

Same here, but replace "metal" with "industrial/industrial sub-genres/goth/synth" (unless you're talking about 70's/80's metal...up the irons!). I never talk about it, though, 'cuz no one else here seems to be a rivet-head.

My music history degree (minor) helps me with "classical" conversations; but since I got the degree 13 years ago, most of the specific knowledge has faded. Also, my music literature degree (minor) helps me explain why Explosions in the Sky is only so-so, while Pelican and Red Sparrowes are phenomenal by comparison (which i did in some other thread a long time ago).

i agree with box elder. me.

My Little Needle
05-14-2008, 07:27 PM
this thread makes me uncomfortable

nate is one of the last people that would write a 33 1/3 book. unless it was about all hail west texas or something.

I said someone else because I thought of buh immediately but gil fits the standards most of what eddie said... considering he, you know, writes for a music blog.

I was thinking of applying to coke machine glow myself in fact.

it's pretty cool too. they aren't stringent or anything... i haven't submitted something for awhile. actually they probably forgot about me

but if you tried real hard you could probably become a pretty prominent reviewer. i'm lazy. just make sure you make it known that you specialize in music that's kinda underrepresented by the site. i did chick singer-songwriters

buh
05-14-2008, 09:51 PM
i forgot about sampson. i dont see him board much but he pretty much knows loads

also sam i hope you dont mind if i use the phrase "cargo shorts music" repeatedly and emphatically in future real-life conversations

buh
05-15-2008, 03:49 AM
haha ive been saying it for a while now especially when me and my friends bully lame nu-metal headz

it gets them every time

edit: adam r is cool though

Unless you can tell me something I don't know about Guru Guru, Les Rallizes Dénudés, Throbbing Gristle, Jim "Foetus" Thirlwell, Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy, Psychic TV, and Rimsky-Korsakov; you don't know dick about music...granted, i'm writing this after three 750 ml bottles of sake...but still, i'm not impressed unless someone tells me something i don't know...

cool points deducted for using the ever-so-standard relatively-obscure avantgarde-but-not-too-avantgarde "look at me i'm cool" composer choice rimsky-korsakov. have a go with isaac albeniz or something next time

cool points added for mildly intriguing choice of guru guru for token not-faust-neu-or-can krautrock band instead of traditional "look at me im cool" not-faust-neu-or-can krautrock choice of amon duul (II)

cool points deducted for ludicrously obvious "look at me im cool" choice of thirlwell (he's collaborated with THURSTON MOORE for god's sake....he couldnt be any less cool)

les rallizes denudes....jesus, talk about TRYING TOO HARD. at least you didnt say melt banana, i suppose. cool points deducted

if i were kind i might give cool points for mentioning skinny puppy instead of, i dunno, ministry, but since im not i wont. mentioning any kind of remotely industrial band in a "look at me im cool" contest smacks of a serious case of TRYING TOO HARD

which brings us to.....throbbing gristle, who you mention not once but twice. now, there is no other way to say "look at me im not cool" in a "look at me in cool" contest than to mention throbbing gristle, the no. 1 band that people mention to look hip but who really rarely ever listen to. seriously, they're sort of pish. and you mentioned them twice

and psychic tv had that guy from throbbing gristle in it, smacking not only of trying too hard but of desperation in throwing in what is in some sense a side project

you were saying?

H Thompson
