View Full Version : Ranking Some Guilty Pleasures
Dead Nigga Storage

I'll preface this by saying I don't really 'believe' in the concept of a guilty pleasure...if you like the shittiest music in the world fine, whatever. I listen to a lot of stuff that I know isn't exactly 'great music,' and I couldn't care less.
But this is sort of just out of interest for me. I don't know the critical standing, or the standing among individuals of a lot of the music I listened to. I've taken 10, most of them fairly recent, that I listen to a ton and I want you to rank them from 'least' to 'worst' guilty pleasures according to how good you think they are/how good you think they are perceived to be. Also provide a brief reason why (I don't care how short...5 words if you want.) I'm also aware that a couple of these are nowhere near guilty pleasures, but I'm still not sure on critical standing.
kthxbye.
The list (in no real order):
Gorillaz
The Offspring (EARLY Offspring, first couple albums)
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Rogue Wave
Editors
The Hives
Voxtrot
Fatboy Slim
The Hold Steady
The Dandy Warhols

rogue wave
the hives
the dandy warhols
gorillaz
voxtrot
fatboy slim
black rebel motorcycle club
editors
the offspring
rogue wave's first album is still one of my favorites of the decade. the hives are goofy and i only like one of their albums but i really, really love it. and their goofiness. dandy warhols...well, let's just say the first four i listed have at least one good album. then voxtrot has decent eps but a meh album. fatboy slim has some good singles. then it's all kind of a wash

also the b-sides to the voxtrot lp are way better than the lp. isn't saying much but they're good
voxtrot was one of my favorites from pitchfork this year. took me by surprise since i didn't really think much of them either way beforehand.

not trying to be an elitist prick here (or maybe i am?) but i have never heard anything by: hold steady, rogue wave, dandy warhols, black rebel motorcycle club, editors. the hives i remember at least hearing a few songs from years ago but i couldn't tell you what they sound like. nothing wrong with gorillaz, i actually still have their first album on my computer despite not having listened to it in quite a while. offspring i used to listen to years ago. i have no idea how i would like their songs now. fatboy slim has some songs that are kinda fun to throw on when you're in the right mood. voxtrot is the only one of the ten i'll actually listen to on occasion. i haven't heard the lp but those eps are pretty good.
and there you go

I don't know the other bands, but first two Fatboy Slims are great records.
Anyway, my guilty pleasure is propagating The Chameleons on various fora, so here I go :)

theres two ways to do qualifty a guilty pleasure band. you can choose bands the majority of this board dislikes, but that you yourself find value in. alternately, you could choose bands you love but recognize as being garbage. (or they could be both)
strange then, that DNS didnt choose "franz ferdinand," and i dont really get most of the rest of his list (or christ's nearly identical one). but i'll play:
r kelly
my chemical romance
t pain
the killers
(as in, i have multiple songs on my ipod by all these artists)
i also have a brief infatuation with the occassional mega-produced, over-the-top modern day emo number. as so:

For me, it's clearly The Mars Volta, though I think they fall under the first heading that p&s said. i find value in them, but they're pretty hated by this board. interestingly enough, with the exception of pitchfork, most of their records have received around the 70 mark in critical praise.

your list:
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Editors
Voxtrot/Rogue Wave
Gorillaz
The Hold Steady
The Dandy Warhols
Fatboy Slim
The Hives
The Offspring (EARLY Offspring, first couple albums)
I don't know Voxtrot or Rogue Wave, so they can't be that *bad*
The Offspring are kind of fratjeep, so there's your guiltiest one there.
Hard to have too much shame about Editors.
Fatboy Slim is fine and all, but he's a bit cliché. moreso for the Hives.

T-Pain
The Fray
Dashboard Confessional
Rick Ross
a lot of rap songs that are played on the radio or in clubs are kind of a guilty pleasure for me.

I'm gonna go with this one too

I thought of that thread when you said My Chemical Romance. Heady stuff. Possibly your bravest and most soul-baring board moment.
For me, it's got to be all the ska I listened to in college. That and your standard Lisa Loeb-style female singer/songwriters.
