I know some well known American bands which are fairly big in England but haven't broke through in america yet. I've noticed this with kings of leon and oddly enough Sonic youth charted a lot better in england than america (Dirty came to 6 in the english charts whereas it only reached 83 in America) I never really thought of Sonic Youth like that before.

Because only the American charts count, der. If you arent charting here you're a "has-been" or worse as "one hit wonder."

I thought it was about the Alphaville song, which I haven't thought about in years.

Bon Jovi are pretty big in Japan, they hold the record for the most #1 albums of any group. They hadn't charted well in the US for almost 20 years until they got a #1 album last year.

Scissor Sisters have had a few hit singles in the UK, but I haven't heard of anyone in the US who likes them.

Oh, and it's BRITISH, not English. We buy albums too, you know.

Yeah they're talked about a lot over here. I remember once they were being interviewed on a british tv show and they said they're nowhere near as well-known in the states as they are in the UK.

Nah, it's just a fairly suitable thread title.

because of canadian content laws, there's alot of bands here that become quite big but can't break through in america (or elsewhere) I assume. Examples: Sloan, Our Lady Peace, Arcade Fire, I Mother Earth, etc.

I also heard Pointed Sticks are really popular in Japan, which is strange but I think it's more that they have a following there, not like big hits. and for the record the best "big in japan" song is by Tom Waits.
