View Full Version : Two Asian Movies Worth Watching

Here are two asian disaster/monster films worth watching. Both of their graphics are excellent, probably better than the ones in the states.
Japan Sinks (2006)
This film involves the Japan about to 'sink' due to a nearby faultline, and natural disasters occure around the country. Lets just say it's a cross of Day After Tomorrow, Volcano, and Deep Impact, but with better CGI and more realistic.
The Host (2006)
A Korean film about a fast deadly amphibian-like monster who terrorizes Seoul. Scenes with kids dying, and a rather gory scene involving the monster vomiting something out that I can't describe it on this forum, but it's a nice film with the same degree of CGI as Japan Sinks

i don't know that i like the implications of this thread title
as an asian (authority!), there are others that don't rely on cgi graphics that are good
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/ is one. (tale of two sisters)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/ (oldboy) this movie is freaking intense, and is like a greek tragedy. it's awesome. it's part of a trilogy

yeah i don't know what that is, i'm not really an authority. i just don't like perpetuating the idea that asian movies are only "gojira!"

Incredibly enjoyable movie about these 4 korean guys taking over a gas station. Let's just say: the guys, the local high school bully crew, the police, the mafia, and a gang of delivery boys in a brawl. Yeah.
It's one of the few azn movies Ive seen that wasnt horror.

That's one of the most disturbing movies I've watched. Very good, but cripes.
I haven't seen many asian movies, but I watched Infernal Affairs yesterday and loved it

did kurosawa ever actually make a terrible film? the more I think about it, he might be an even more consistent director then kubrick.

Definitly not from Korea. I think it's from either China or Hong Kong
The Host... saw it year ago and it was great. Not wow-great, though. I've seen better Korean movies. Like these:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475783/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/ (This one's kind of gory)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192657/
(Never got to see it, but it supposedly is a great romance-thriller)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/ (oldboy)
Watch this too. It has one of like, best storylines I've ever seen.
i've only barely scratched the surface but asian cinema is becoming my favorite foreign cinema
and yojimbo is awesome. haven't seen a kurosawa film i didn't like yet.

Many of the asian/samurai movies are often hard to find where i live, but i can enjoy asian cinema too. Once saw "Shinsengumi chronicles", long time ago though. There are also many longrunning TV series, anyone seen Abarenbo Shogun? :silly:
KIKU-TV has been known for broadcasting many of these with subtitles.

ahh i remember welcome to dongmakgul being out when i went to korea, but i didn't see it. probably because i wouldn't understand very much without subtitles. i did, however, see mr. and mrs. smith with my mom and aunt there. awkward.

Yeah I've seen that show, it's pretty good. I watched a lot of KIKU from back when they still played Crayon Shinchan. Favorites were Kinpachi Sensei and Ao no Jidai. Kinda sucks now because they're switching to very "multi-cultural" and starting to show stuff like Law and Order and The Simpsons in place of original programming from Japan. Also showing some random Filipino shows and Korean, although we get a Korean station here too that sucks me in once in awhile with kdrama, but the only one I watched in its entirety was Dear Encounter.

Since everyone is mentioning the serious stuff, I'll say
Lady Snowblood (Shurayukihime) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158714/) ...it's one of my favorite movies ever, now.
For a horror movie, Infection (Kansen) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418778/) . This movie will actually scare you in some way.
