do you ever get annoyed with the fact that sometimes a record will be universally accepted by critics and fans as the bands' best work when you strongly disagree? i do

hearts of oak>tyranny of distance
believo! and hocus pocus>high society
stories from the city, stories from the sea>rid of me
geogaddi>music has the right to children
surfer rosa>doolittle (willing to argue and discuss any of these except this one, i've done it enough)

i think i like the slow riot EP more than lift yr skinny fists but i guess that's different if you don't include full lengths. i like gimme fiction better than any other spoon stuff but they don't have one album that's considered their best by a longshot

One I can think of for me is "Paul's Boutique". For years it was once the most disliked album by fans and critics of the Beastie Boys, but now it's pretty much universally accepted by those same fans and critics as the BBoys best album that was "years ahead of its time" . I do agree that it is a great album, but in my opinion I still think:

That's not a very bold statement. Every radiohead fan has their opinion of their favorite, and I think each one can be defended for it's strengths and weaknesses (except for Pablo Honey).

I'm new to Smith's work, so it's close for me. I haven't heard Figure 8 yet, just the other two, but if Somebody That I Used To Know and Everything Reminds Me Of Her are any indication, I may just end up agreeing with you here. One thing I love about his records is that they end very well, so these are all good signs.

Hmm...it's maybe second best for me. I just love Girls Can Tell so much. But they're about tied. Ga has the knockout single tracks, but GCT is a better cohesive piece of work.

bleach > nevermind (i don't expect anyone to agree)

I disagree to the effect that it doesn't sound like a Nirvana albums. "Bleach" sounds like a Melvins fan made an album that sounds a lot like the Melvins; which is exactly what it is. Of course, having the Melvins drummer play on three songs adds even more to that perception. Then there's Chad Channing on the rest of the album, who is no where near as good as Dave Grohl.

I think the band still had a long way to go creatively when they made "Bleach". I like "Bleach" a hell of a lot, but I have to agree with the critics and fans, and put "Nevermind" above it.
