This is interesting. It seems there will be a new C4+1 channel on Freeview soon. But whether that includes The Simpsons, I'm not sure, because can C4 broadcast episodes on what is, in effect, Sky TV?

Did anyone else notice the messy cutting in Bart vs Lisa vs the 3rd Grade? I've forgotten what it was but it was very obvious. The episode was a C for me (didn't like how Bart went from arsehole to nice brother in about 10 seconds). Large Marge is a C+: fairly good but I don't like the first act.

Bart vs. Lisa vs. Third Grade: B (6/10)
Large Marge: C+ (5/10)

Well, that's an odd coincidence, how did I not see that before? I'm sure they could air OFF on that. It's not exactly Sky TV because as far as I'm aware, Freeview is a compromise between Sky and the terrestrial channels. Well, there's no way that if a +1 channel is launched that some programmes will not be shown an hour later.

The only thing I noticed missing from 3rd grade was the scene where Lisa tries to strangle Bart with her necklace, but I did notice some other awkward cutting in that one. But because I haven't seen the episode for a long while I can't remember what it was . :( Didn't notice any cuts in Large Marge, but again haven't seen it for so long.

The C4+1 channel looks pretty interesting, but there may be trouble with FOX if C4 aired OFF on 2 channels.

Homer to star in Channel 4 trail
Homer Simpson is to star in an animated version of the Channel 4 identity trail that appears between programmes.

In the 30-second clip produced by The Simpsons animators Gracie Films, Homer is electrocuted after his cans of beer are catapulted onto power lines.

A night view then reveals a flickering Channel 4 logo as the lights of Springfield short circuit.

The ident will appear at the weekend, before the 14th series of the hit animated comedy begins on Channel 4.

At the start of the new film, Homer is seen relaxing in a hammock before losing his six-pack of beers. He attempts to retrieve them but is hit with an electric shock.

While the lights of Springfield flicker, Homer persists in his quest to rescue his lost beers.

The Simpsons ident follows the concept of a series of short films featuring locations that eventually reveal the station's logo, including an inner city block of flats and an American cityscape.

The current idents were introduced to the station at the start of 2005.

Head of marketing Rufus Radcliffe said: "We are very proud of our channel identity and it's testament to it that Gracie Films wanted to work their most iconic brand into that creative concept to promote The Simpsons on Channel 4."

A big screen version of the long-running cartoon series is to be released in the UK later this month.

Well, I guess we can't say that Channel Four doesn't promote The Simpsons.

I'm surprised there's just one. I'd have thought they'd get several; it'll get tiring if we see the same one before every episode of The Simpsons.

It's not as simple as a distinction between Sky and Freeview, I don't think. The contracts are much more complicated than that. I'm lead to believe C4+1 won't show the simpsons as c4 have terrestrial rights to the simpsons only, with Sky owning all other rights, such as digital and since Freeview is a digital service , all be it a free to air one, OFF is a no go.

I've just seen on Wikipedia that The Simpsons Movie has been brought forward to 26 July here in the UK (as well as in Ireland and Australia). Does anyone know why this is? I know a page or so back people were saying it and I didn't quite believe it but it seems likely now that I've read it on Wikipedia (and since Wikipedia does not allow information that has no source).

The official release date in the UK for The Simpsons Movie is the 27th. However, there are previews just about everywhere in the UK on July 26th (thanks Cineworld!). So, I think it's fair to say it's out on the 26th of July 2007, that's what it's saying in adverts, anyway.

I saw numerous posters for The Simpsons Movie in the cinema in Durham (Gala Theatre, which has 2 cinema screens and has recently started showing films during the day as well as at night). yesterday when I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (which was brilliant), most of which say 26/7/07 (a few older ones say 27/7/07). My grandparents took me yesterday and are going to take me on 26th to see The Simpsons Movie on its opening day. :D

I've just seen that C4 Simpsons ident. Not bad.

The Friday Night Project just came on and the sound stopped as soon as he said "This morning Beth Ditto arrived at this London studi..." and didn't come back on until she started talking (i.e. muted credits). Very odd (the other channels were fine. Meh, who cares what JLC says over the credits, eh?

There's a big multiplex cinema just a quarter of an hour's drive away and they just get some posters. I'd prefer a couch display.

Ahh, I'll buy one on the day, hopefully I'll be able to get in then. There's no couch display in mine either.

So the 2 episodes this afternoon: Both pretty awful, to be honest.

Helter shelter: Only really funny when the family were looking for somewhere to live, the ice hockey stuff and reality 'satire' were poor and pretty difficult to watch, except the occasional good joke like the prank call. The ending was awful. D

Great louse detective: The first act was one of the worst first acts I've ever seen in the show, so many poor attempts at jokes I kept looking at the clock. The rest of the episode was okay-ish but should have focused more on Bob, and I also kept getting distracted by extremely bad jokes. the ending was pretty funny though, C-

Seeing as I haven't seen these episodes before, anyone notice any cuts?

Nameless
07-15-2007, 11:02 AM
Frank Grimes Sr's line about his father liking hookers was really poorly cut, as they included Homer's 'how could frank grimes have a son, he wasn't married' line.

Helter Shelter - D-
Great Louse... - C-/D+

gonz
07-15-2007, 11:35 AM
Helter shelter was pretty much a poor attempt yet again. And I'd agree with how badly introduced the "liking hookers" joke was and that they could have done alot other ways of making a cut to it.

helter shelter - D
the great louse detective - D+

I was kind of amused by the swiggy gag where he says "hello levirne". But the rest of the episode was pretty much a "meh." Same with great louse apart from some moments which made me laugh.

Onto the subject of movie tickets, I got mine today for the 26th. I'm going to the first screening at that theatre and will probably have to leave at about 9 in the morning. Firstly because the theatre I'm going to is an hour away, and secondly in case of overbooking (which is likely)

Missed them again. Damn crappy time slot. Oh well, I'll just try and catch what I can, I'm not too bothered anyway since both of those episodes suck and this season isn't exactly brilliant. I think I'll try and remember from I'm Spelling.. to Three Gays... though, since that's clearly the best run of post-classic episodes.

D'oheth!
07-16-2007, 01:41 AM
T4 said The Simpsons would be back in two weeks, so I guess it's on hold again.

Both episodes were very poor. I preferred Louse, but that's like choosing between being kicked in the head or the balls.

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE IS COMING OUT IN THE UK ON WEDNESDAY THE 25TH OF JULY, NOT JULY 27/26

Eh, a couple of days earlier is a couple of days earlier (obviously, but you know what I mean. :D)

Here's my post from The Movie Forum:

I did a bit of searching on the net earlier and it would appear that all the major cinemas in the UK are showing The Simpsons Movie on Wednesday the 25th as a preview. This includes Vue, Cineworld and as already said Odeon. Great news for UK'ers. So fear not Otis P Jivefunk, and whover else doesn't live near a Odeon cinema, it looks like most if not all of the cinema's will do screenings on the Wednesday.

Looking at the movie reviews for "The People" and "The Times" made me prompt a question. What newpspaers does everyone read, when they buy one? Or don't you read them at all? Was the "New Orleans" song re-instated on last night's A Streetcar Named Marge? I had to leave just as the musical was starting (I think I got as far as Apu's "paper boy" song).

It's before the paper boy one, so if you didn't see it, it probably was cut.

I'm going on Friday night, so please, no spoilers until Saturday! I'm going to try and convince my grandparents and sister to go tomorrow instead, but they probably won't: I don't know if they have already reserved tickets or not (and so of course I wouldn't ask).

EDIT: Yes, they already have the tickets. So I'm definitely going to see it on Friday night at 8pm.

I've seen the movie! Saw it this evening (Wednesday, 8.30 at Vue), booked in advance, which was a good idea in the end cos we got there fairly early and they were sold out! But damn, it was expensive to book. The tickets were £7.55 each with the booking fee.

Overall it's pretty good, it was consistently funny throughout, though it didn't have any MASSIVE laughs. I'll probably go and see it again, when it comes onto our more local cinema (which will be cheaper too!!). Word of advice: STAY UNTIL THE VERY END! There's a bunch of extra bits over the credits, including a nice closing scene with Burns/Smithers, then a scene with the Simpsons as if they just watched the film, then Squeaky Voiced Teen right at the very end.

Interesting side note, I'm pretty sure that Vue used one of my pictures from Simpson Crazy in their pamphlet! On the front, by the title "what's on vue" is my picture of Bart! (I think SC is down again but if the site works for you it's BartSimpson8.gif.) I don't think they would have got it from anywhere else, IIRC it was from one of the old Simpsons Comics.

I don't have the means to record any of it and make it available online, but if someone could, that would be great :)
For radio stuff you could listen to it online and record it (Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) is a great free program to record your computer's audio). Actually if anyone wants I can probably do that.

For TV stuff check out uknova.com, may take a while before you can sign up. If people can't get on and you won't be able to watch any specials I may be able to put them somewhere for people to see them. But keep it quiet.

Wow, it's been ages since I posted in this thread! I've only been on dialup for the past few weeks so have hardly used the internet. Broadband is here though!

It does, downloads count towards the actual chart now, even if there is no physical single release, so literally anything can get to number 1. Expect it to be in the chart proper, if not as high as on the itunes chart

Worst cut ever: Ch4 cut out Bart strangling Homer in Barting Over. His hands too small, he whips Homer's belt out and strangles Homer with it. As a result, Homer's belt is suddenly around his neck in the cut version. So obvious it's not funny.

EDIT: A guy screaming "Keep it down in there! We're trying to sell drugs!" is cut.
EDIT 2: The crazy homeless guy saying "of drugs!" is cut. Now he just says "I'll buy a suit!" and laughs off. For some reason, they left in Bart talking about finding syringes.

simplysimpsons
08-12-2007, 08:54 AM
Yeah, it was one of the sloppiest cuts I've ever seen. One second, Bart's trying to choke Homer and the next Homer's taking a belt off his neck? So- it's perfectly acceptable for Homer to strangle Bart with a phone cord and not Bart strangling Homer with a belt. Damn C4!

Anyway, Pray Anything: C+ (started really well, fell apart towards the end and Homer in the church felt incredibly awkward) Barting Over B (Good overall, very poor ending though)

I happen to like Pray Anything, and felt it got a lot more interesting when the church got involved. "Holy shining light" is still one of my favourite lines. I'm giving it a B, especially considering that's the most time my favourites seem to have got out of the whole season.

I didn't really like Barting Over, though, so I'll give it a C/D.

TO2S was aired in a later slot than Barting.

In the courtroom scene, when Homer rushes up at Judge Harm, there's a sudden sound of a punch on the soundtrack, despite no such thing happening onscreen - is this a cut?

Then we kept all the stuff in the viagra commerical which was really stupid.

CH4 Episodes This Week (Starting Sunday 18th August)
(From SNPP.com)

SUN 19 AUG 16:00 BABF21 Treehouse of Horror XI (B); 16:30 BABF17 Insane Clown Poppy (B)
MON 20 AUG 18:00 2F15 Lisa's Wedding (A+)
TUE 21 AUG 18:00 2F18 Two Dozen and One Greyhounds (B-)
WED 22 AUG 18:00 2F19 The PTA Disbands (B)
THU 23 AUG 18:00 2F32 'Round Springfield (A+)
FRI 24 AUG 18:00 2F21 The Springfield Connection (B)

Some awesome episodes this coming week... seriously, there's not one beneath a 'B-' in the bunch in my opinion. As for Sky One, there's an odd mixture of Season 3 and Season 17/18 this week. Some worth looking out for, some not. CH4 basically pwns the cack out of Sky this week.

Rev, did you see S4C when you were there? I like it better than C4- for one thing, they aren't intrusive with the credits at all and secondly Friends is on right after instead of hollyoaks. Oh, and I HATE that new advert C4 are doing at the bottom of every show. Yes, I already knew about 4+1, it's shoved in our faces at the start and end of every programme. Damn C4!

Yes, I did. Unfortunately, my family didn't watch it for very long, mainly because we don't understand Welsh and didn't have much patience with it. I didn't see much, so I can't really compare it to C4.

Heh, do they translate the Simpsons into Welsh? That would be funny. I was also in Wales last weekend at the Green Man Festival, which was awesome. No TV though, we were camping.

Oh, and The IT Crowd is abysmal. Awful uproarious canned laughter at non-existent jokes and the whole thing lacks originality and creativity. Can't believe it's by the same guy who wrote Father Ted.

I can't wait for BB to end, but I know C4 will think of some crappy shows to fill the scheduele. 13 weeks of seeing people sitting around biting their nails, cleaning, kissing and sleeping. Entertaining, I know. *Rolls eyes*

Yes, even with Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother eating up the schedules this year Channel 4 could still have found a prime time slot somewhere along the line for the end of series 13 and the start of 14. The fact that they've shunted it, unadvertised, to sunday afternoons makes it unlikely IMHO that they'll start showing it again on Friday nights.
I note that next friday they're even screening an hour-long 'documentary' looking back at this summer's BB. Never mind, I suspect that programme's had its day. The (relative) lack of tabloid interest, the cancellation of Celebrity Big Brother and the unwelcome spotlight they received over 'Shilpagate' and their increasingly unsavoury production 'values': BB might crawl into 2008, but I'm sure as eggs is eggs that it won't survive through to 2010.

Forgot to add: if you're getting excited about the return of Simpsons terrestrial premieres to channel 4 primetime, remember that they opted to screen a triple bill of Ugly Betty REPEATS in that time slot when they could have shown the rest of season 13.

I remember when Sky One did that little apolagy thing at the beginning of the premier of "Homer Simpson, this is you wife" and made out that they were apologizing to channel four about what Rickey Gervais said about channel four showing new episodes three years after they were shown on S1, but then turned it into a joke and saying that viewers of C4 would have to wait 4 years for new episodes. Man that pissed me off.

So C4 stop airing season 14 1/3 of the way in and won't show the rest till over 1 years time. How I hate them!

S4C is like 50/50 Welsh and English programming, and the English stuff doesn't have subtitles or anything. Nor do they have screen-squashing trailers, lengthly talking over the credits, or irritating tickers at the bottom. ;)

Hello to you all, just a message from Matt, here in Thailand. Enjoying myself very much if you were wondering...

Wait, I already asked Adam to post that for me. Just online so I could talk to my school/college friends about my GCSE results (which I've known about for over a week and have made four attempts about which to contact my friends by MSN).

In the interests of both modesty and not leaving you guys wondering, here are the results in size 1 font: A* in English Language, English Literature, Maths, French, History and GNVQ ICT (equivalent of 4). A in RE (Short Course, 1/2 GCSE), Science (Double Award) and Music. Get in.

I agree that if the show moved to five it'd get a lot more promotion, but fewer people would watch it as five has a certain stigma attached to it due to its first five years consisting of pretty much nothing but films, football and fucking. I wouldn't want it to go to ITV1 because they'd be pretty crappy with it. C4 are messing with it, but BBC2 wouldn't be that much better (the BBC would probably put it on BBC3 like they have with Family Guy).

As for leaving the rest of S14 to October 2008: I'm sure it's a misprint for 2007. It had better be.

Ta-ta for now.

For those of you who may be interested, I got back today and still can't get into contact with any of my school/college mates to find out their results.

Now that I'm home, I have ordered my student bus ticket. Since I start college tomorrow, I won't actually receive it until Monday. Bastards. £450 for the year, but I'll have to pay an extra £15 in tickets (£5 per day tomorrow, Friday and Monday since our post doesn't come until about noon). The council haven't sent me my subsidy yet, so I'm lucky that my grandparents gave me the money to pay for the ticket otherwise my mum couldn't afford it. If you're interested (which I'm sure you're not, but I'll tell you anyway), they'll be giving me £130 each term.

I've had to have a student loan and everything. Luckily, I get a bit of a maintenance grant to play with which should be going in when I start back properly, the 17th.

Isn't that new Simpsons CD supposed to be coming out then? "The Simpsons: Testify" or something - I read about it, and yes, saw something like it on the computers at work when I searched for new Simpsons products coming out.

Worth getting, I feel. There's been a fair bit of good music and original songs from the show since the last compilation (Go Simpsonic) was released.

I saw the T4 episodes for the first time in weeks today. Purely by coincidence, I just turned off a DVD and saw the show before I turned the TV off. The episodes were fairly poor though, Day of the Jackanapes and New Kids on the Blecch. A couple things I laughed at, but overall pretty bad.

Also, I hear that season 10's out on DVD tomorrow (thanks Barney!). Anyone planning on getting it tomorrow? I'll pick it up eventually, I just don't care to until it's cheap or I have nothing else I particularly want to buy or most likely, my birthday.

Oh and The IT Crowd has been pretty funny so far. I can see what people don't like about it, but I just love how plain silly this show gets. The piracy warning on the last one was hilarious:

I haven't bothered to get Season 10 yet, as it's my birthday in a month, so I think I can wait. I'll probably get some of the other seasons I haven't gotten yet, too. HMV are probably the best for the boxsets (if you don't order via the internet) and they usually have all the seasons for about £20 each, with the new releases about £30. Season 10 is a pretty boring season, with a few good episodes in there (Lisa gets an "A," Lard of the Dance) so it's worth getting for collecting purposes.

Anyway saying the IT crowd t is the best thing on television comes back to the thing about the simpsons being better 99% of television - that doesn't mean it's very good.
In fact I've not really been watching it but Saxondale was better this week, other than that the only other notable comedy series is that lee mack thing not going out, which I watched an episode of and despite being a BBC1 show, wasn't much worse than The IT crowd.

Mock the Week is perhaps the funniest thing on TV at the moment. H Thompson is right about it feeling like fast-food, but it's fucking good fast-food. "That blonde dude" is Russell Howard, and I think he's really funny (I'm contemplating buying a ticket or two for his live show in November, depending on the money: I'm already going to see Bill Bailey and Maroon 5 that month). He has taken to shouting at least once per episode this series, which is usually a great gag, too.

If that isn't a joke then awesome! I love his films. What was on it? I'd guess at Dead Man's Shoes, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands and This Is England.

My other thoughts in brief:
- IT Crowd wasn't as good this week. Peter File joke was funny but as HT said it's been done before.
- Not Going Out wasn't too bad, better than usual anyway
- Heroes is fantastic!
- Mock the Week is the best comedy show on at the moment, the others suck in comparison
- Russel Howard has a show on BBC 6 Music on Sunday mornings, it's pretty good. If you have a digital radio check it out (or listen online).

Did anyone watch Outnumbered when it was on a couple weeks ago? I found it hilarious! A bit like "Kids say the funniest things", except scripted (mostly) so it is actually funny and in context...

Definitely give Brass Eye a go - satire at its best. A lot of people overlook the contribution that the Father Ted writers make: they collaborate quite a lot with Morris, and obviously share a strong sense of the absurd.

The guy who said that the special is overrated compared to the series is quite correct: it is fairly good, but no where near as strong as Sex, Crime, Animals or (in particular) Drugs.

And the guy who says the one on heavy electricity drags is also right. Science is the weakest episode, because its the only one where Morris doesn't fashion the correct angle. With all the others he works out the important moral and cultural issues at stake, and 'investigates' them. He doesn't do this anywhere near as well with Science; you're left more with a sense of how scientific issues are mis-represented, dumbed down and deliberately exaggerated for television news broadcasts - but this is fairly thin for a satire. In hindsight it is a little surprising that someone as iconoclastic as Morris didn't take a similar approach to South Park on Stem cell research - that would be an example of a scientific issue with a lot of satirical worth.

That South Park episode is one of my favourites, btw. I'm gald they're finally going to release the season 5 DVD for the region 2 market.

Yeah, I totally agree. The satire of television news wears pretty thin at times, especially after seeing it in 6 episodes (and considering I first saw the series in two sittings). All the best bits come from the subject matter.

And for the record, my favourite episode is probably Sex.

Ooh, QI. I'll probably catch that and watch the IT Crowd on +1. Providing I remember that is, I've watched the whole series of the IT Crowd so far either on Sky+ or +1.

And HT, I'll probably check out The Day Today, since 5/6 of the episodes are on the same site I posted above.

Don't forget that if you enjoy the first episode of QI on BBC2, episode 2 is on BBC4 at 10:30pm. I generally don't bother with such frivolity, but since Heroes started, I think it's a very good plan (showing the new episode straight after the last one on digital)! Is anyone else hooked on it?

^Hooked on Heroes or QI? I'm one of the very few people who watched QI right from the very first episode, so I've been hooked on that for 4 years now. As for Heroes, I got hooked back in March. The 3-part series finale is incredibly gripping TV.

I'm fairly sure I watched the first episode or at least first series of QI too. However I've missed when it's been on or it's clashed with other things, so my viewing has been inconsistent. Forgot about viewing the second episode after too. QI was quite funny, although smuttier than any episode I recall seeing. IT Crowd was OK.

What was smutty about last night's QI? I too missed the second one on BBC4. The IT Crowd didn't impress me much (not a patch on series 1, or on Father Ted of course). I've seen every QI from series 1-4, if not on TV then on DVD (S1) or YouTube.

When I said hooked, I meant on Heroes. Hiro is definitely the best character.

I'm definately hooked. I agree, Hiro is the best, but I like Claire and Nikki too.

I if can just stray off-topic a tad. So if series 19 airs tomorrow in America, when will we get it? How long does it usually take Sky?

It won't air for a while because sky haven't shown all S18 episodes i think they still have to show 4 or 5 more episodes so S19 will probaly air sometime in november.

What was smutty about last night's QI?

I can't recall QI having jokes about blow jobs and nails in cocks before. I didn't say it was necessarily bad, I just can't seem to remember many jokes like that on QI before. Oh and my favourite joke was quite possibly Bill Bailey and Rob Brydon debating the dumps in their area.

There was one that had a lengthy discussion about whale penises, they do go into dick jokes from time to time.

And I live near to Richmond, so I'll have to check that out.

Just out of interest, anybody catch Eastenders yesterday? My brother's an idiot and says he doesn't remember what happened.

We will get S19 October or November - I would guess they're planning to air the remaining six episodes of S18 consecutively, so probably not until November unless we're going to get double-features.

C4 airing S9 can only be so far away now - there are no S9 episodes on Sky's current schedule so I'd be willing to bet they've already swapped something for that.

so, uh...what's up with that sky/virgin media crisis thing?

matt228

Up, Nameless, is that Virgin customers still can't get Sky One and they've even set up a new channel called Virgin 1 to compete.

I was going to post about straying off-topic onto The Simpsons discussion, but Adam has already beaten me to it.

The QI discussion about the tips was good. I liked the idea of giving sweets on a toy train, for some reason.

I just watched Simpsons Safari, I'm waiting for Trilogy of Error to start.

Simpsons Safari: C. Slightly worse than I remember (although I appreciate that the president being overthrown is very common in Africa, and thus understand the joke now).

Trilogy of Error was an A- last time I rated it.

EDIT: Has anyone else noticed that The Britsons is still online, a full year after Liam said the domain would go?

Luckily, I only caught the last 5 mins of Simpsons Safari but I gave that a D last time. Trilogy of Error though is pure genius. Amazingly well done plot with so many references to each story, funny, great animation too. My favourite over the past 8 years. A+

Maybe the website automatically charges him for the renewal and he hasn't realised it yet.

In other discussions, has anyone attempted to ask C4 why S14 has been pulled?

Any idea what's showing on Fridays on channel 4 in the 9 - 10:30pm slot, once the Phoenix Nights double bill (repeat) and The It Crowd finish? Which I believe is this coming Friday.

Ugly Betty, Comedy Showcase and My Name is Earl.

Ugly Betty is terrible. I don't see why people love it so much.

I caught the last half of Simpson Safari when I got home. Decent episode, but that's all it will ever be. C. Trilogy of Error, on the other hand, is fantastic. The best of the Scully era. Genius plot. I forgot how much I loved it. A.

Is there an R&R Thread up for 'He Loves to Fly..' yet? I'll have to read the reviews tonight. I'm curious...

Well, it isn't airing for another 7 1/2 hours (give or take a bit).
