It's an upward battle, but Tetris takes it for me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Tetris is the greatest video game ever made. Simple, addictive, accessible, it's the game that everyone knows how to play, whether they like it or not. It's traveled across two decades and countless platforms (consoles, hand-helds, computers, cell phones), and it's just as much fun to play as it has ever been. I've played and enjoyed Tetris for 17 years, and I certainly intend to keep playing and enjoying it for another 17 years.

Super Mario 64 is pretty good too though.

It's an easy battle, but Super Mario 64 takes it for me. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Super Mario 64 is the second greatest video game ever made. Simple, addictive, accessible, it's the game that everyone knows how to play, whether they like it or not. It's traveled across one decades and countless platforms (consoles and handhelds!), and it's just as much fun to play as it has ever been. I've played and enjoyed Super Mario 64 for 10 years, and I certainly intend to keep playing and enjoying it for another 10 years.

So maybe it doesn't sound as impressive. But anyway, for me, Super Mario 64 was pure enjoyment with barely any faults. Aside from the water levels maybe, the game was pure, harmless, addictive (moreso than Tetris) fun! I guess it has something to do with my fondness for the game, given that it was kinda the first console game I ever played, but yeah, it wins the round for me.

Damn, Tetris is great and deserves to go far, but SM64 is near flawless.

Super Mario 64 is the kind of game you can't quite explain why it's great, but it is and still a blast today even with all the next gen videogames.

went with Tetris because it has the fewest games, SM64 is so awesome and totally deserves to advance, so I won't be surprised or upset with the outcome of this bracket

Mario 64 by a mile. Tetris is just a fun time-waster to me.

Fifteen levels in a Mario game is a god damned abomination.

Either game going through fine by me. Both are fantastic. But I gotta give Tetris some love. Seriously, who knew a simple game of stacking blocks would take the world by storm and revolutionize puzzle-like games such as this. The grandfather of many a game, it is.

As far as I'm concerned, Tetris is nothing more than something to play when you're incredibly bored. Super Mario 64 is much more fun and much more addictive.

I get that feeling, but then, I don't have a problem with it...

Predictable as dirt but deserved or whatever. If we ever hold this contest again, final games definitely being disqualified.

I think if you really wanted something here with less than predictable results, you'd have to immediately ban every Zelda, Mario, and Goldeneye just to start. Otherwise, it's just going to be a similar situation all over again. Still good to keep it open to everything with the first contest however, predictable or not. Not to mention it makes Silent Hill 2 coming even this far all the more impressive, even though it's going to be slaughtered in its coming round.

And Mario 64 for this round, with some copy and pasted reasons about creating a wonderful, interactive, playground world that's a joy to explore being a greater statement of what video games have uniquely achieved than an abstract puzzler. Or something like that anyway. :silly:

I shouldn't have to ban every game in the noted series, though, that's what bugs me. Even though I probably will have to if the contests continue.

I think that a bunch of them deserved to be in the contest in the first place over the original list that had to be chopped down, there were just a bunch that I didn't think would get this far if it weren't for the name. There have been a few people admitting they just vote for a game because of the series it's in, which is a shame. The games are consistently good and fun, not ALL of them are REALLY what I would choose to be best game of all time over a lot of the others that have been in here. I suppose it's a case of a good game with originality vs. something that just plain works all the time? On the flip side, people shouldn't cast an anti-vote just because "there's too much of this." That isn't any more fair and is annoying.

If anything, this will be discussed before the possible next tournament (or just in this tournament's main thread). And other than that, the quarter finalists or semi finalists I think will definitely be retired regardless anyway.

Also I voted for Tetris because it is perhaps the purest game I will ever know.

Say you could choose only one zelda or mario game. It would win every round because everyone would know it is the only mario/zelda game in the tournament.

And I'm voting for tetris, as should any person who actually played video games in the 80's.

At PAX last week I watched a little video panel on "Speed Running". There was a little segment on some Mario 64 levels... an insane choreographed 3D dance of spinning & jumping and landing perfectly on ledges... it reminded me of how much the game simply blew my damn mind the first time I powered it up.

Not as impressive compared to todays huge 3D worlds... but it was just nuts back then and I spent hours & hours playing it.

Tetris is a classic for sure... but honestly the only times I really played it was on my gameboy on long family car rides... because I couldn't play my console system.

The "Speed Running" show concluded with someone beating the original super mario bros, start to finish, in 5 min... it was insane.

Never really got into tetris and super mario 64 was the first game I played so super mario 64 all the way.
