I dunno, they could've fit another Samus in the bottom right there. Also in between dark Samus' arm cannon and leg. And the whole space between the T and Nintendo could've had little Samus heads too. Way to drop the ball guys.

I wish one of the Prime games could have some of the gorgeous 2D art Retro does, like in their concept art for Samus and other stuff. Something almost artsy for a change.

I don't think I have to say anything about spoilers, although you know Metroid.
Edit: It looks pretty awesome so far. Its very linear though, I know some are going to be a bit put off by that. But its probably just the "introduction stage" and its quite an intro. The use of the other hand looks like it could make the gameplay really dynamic later. Its kind of trippy to see this much of Samus' universe though, away from her lone missions on desolate planets. Complete with NPCs and actual spoken dialogue.
And yet she still remains silent.

i'll bet that since the developers show samus's face at the start of this game instead of saving it for the end, and also since voice acting seems to play a significant role, the big payoff at the end of this game will be that samus finally speaks

Thats what I was thinking too. There was even that one moment with the Captain or whoever he is where there's almost this buildup that makes you think she's going to say something, but then she doesn't.
I'm still not entirely sure what to think about her actually talking.
Oh on another board I found this.

Whats speculated is that its the Federation's attempt to reverse engineer and mass produce her Varia Suit. Samus' suit is made from technology from a really really advanced and nearly exctinct race afterall.
If thats what it is I think its kind of cool how its bulky and imperfect, since Chozo stuff's been implied to be way more advanced than anything humans or many other aliens can currently make. Kinda like how in Prime the Space Pirates tried to do that same thing, but when they tried to recreate the Morphball it got "messy", how it worked was too far beyond their current understanding.
Some say that in those little figures to the right hand side, you can make out Sylux from Hunters. I wouldn't be surprised if they were revealed to have been trying to do it behind her back among other things but of course I can't say until I play the thing through.

I never understood how Samus can have all this megaultrasuperbitchin technology and *still* manages to lose everything but her effing arm cannon in every game. Yeah, sure, it makes for a much less fun game when you come in at the first step with top of the line weaponry, but it *is* Samus Aran, best bounty hunter in the universe, it'd be nice to feel what its like to actually kick some serious, giant-freaking-seventeen-eyed-Metroid ass right from the start, you know?
Then there's the whole - "shit, I lost my [everything], what do I do? Hey, wait a second, there's replicas of the original modules which provided me with that technology, just sitting here in ancient crumbling ruins? How convienent!" - thing.
Once again, I know its mediated by good gameplay design, and I am in no way knocking the Metroid games, nor their plots or ultra-cool weaponry, it just seems a tad bit flimsy at times. Please don't Hyper Beam me, Samus.

Well its like how the Chozo seem to have thought of literally everything when it comes to where to put her stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an anti-Jesus suit or something somewhere out there for her. Game logic.

I'm not too far in but I'll play a lot more later tomorrow. So far though its turning out to be way better than I thought it was going to be.
Its got all the usual Metroid things but in a lot of ways too its very different than the rest of the series. But I think its different in a good way, I like how it emphasizes ...how should I say it...
...the bounty hunter aspect of Samus' character. Interacting with characters and other hunters for once, and going around to different planets with the ship as well as using it for many different situations. Like its an exploration game still but in a different way. I really love how much they're utilizing the ship in this game
MP3 is awesome. Picked it up on Monday actually. Went to a few local stores and they said that Nintendo forced them to remove it from the floor until tuesday, so I went to a third store and they were just stocking it and evidently didn't get the message.

I enjoy walking around with scan on even though I don't need it, because I just want to stare at Samus's eyes looking all over the place.
Also it would've been the funniest thing ever if Samus had missed that entryway after getting ejected from the disposal and just flailed around in space...

I haven't posted much the day and a half because I'm too busy playing OMG.
Seriously, this is the best game on the system right now. The others, Twilight Princess etc, I played them mooching off my best friend's Wii. I got my own Wii just to play this and eventually Brawl and it was well worth it so far. This game really does back up the great reviews its gotten. If you have a Wii and you haven't played this yet what the fuck. Go get it. Even if you haven't gotten a Wii yet but love Metroid seriously consider it.
Its been a while since I've had this much fun playing a game, it more than makes up for Prime 2's shortcomings.
Kupo have you gotten bumper stickers at all? I'm thinking of spending my points on them since the idea of putting custom stickers on awesome OMG starship is hard to resist. I imagine though I have to download some though right? I'm still having some problems getting my Wii to pick up my Wi-fi, I haven't gotten around to looking into that too much yet.
I've got the bumper stickers, and they aren't custom. They are stickers of first-party Nintendo games that you have save files for. The Bobblehead is nice too :) To get them you need to use credits achieved in the game, and receive friend vouchers from other MP3 players.

You need to keep climbing the tower in the chasm with the locked security door. Jump to the door with the green and orange symbol, jump to the platform on the right, face the middle tower and double jump to it. From there you can figure out the rest, and you'll need to find something to bomb to get what you need so you can go back to the crash site and get across the chasm.

I beat the Elysia boss, I quit right when I landed on Valhalla. Yeah seriously. Retro has some really beautiful art usually in their galleries but this one is really the best and most beautiful so far. Its not just concept art and some renders, its some very classy looking stuff. It makes it really worth the credits.
Is this game reminding anyone else of Metroid Fusion a little bit? Its not as linear and not the same, but there's certaib things that are really reminicent. This new ship looks a little bit like a yellow version of the blue ship she uses in Fusion (even lands like it.), Samus recieves objectives from a computer. The more corrupted she gets the more blue her suit gets and now it looks a little reminicent of the fusion suit. The ice beam is replaced by ice missiles. The whole thing about being corrupted and her suit changing etc. The greater interaction between her and the feds as well.
Looks like you can't explore all of the Valhalla at once, you always need fuel cells to unlock a new part of it and those are scattered all over the planets. There's 9 in total apparently. Has anyone here completed that yet?

So does anyone not like MP3 yet? I'm not trying to discredit it or anything, it just seems like everyone talking about it is a fanboy, and I want to know if I go buy this am I going to be disappointed because I haven't in all honestly played a metroid game since metroid on the NES. I know the gameplay has changed to FPS, but still keeps the open-ended adventure theme to some degree.
So, any negative comments, or is it really as good as the fanboys say?
Kiyosuki
08-31-2007, 04:11 PM
Its hard not to be a fan because the series has been consistently not bad. But well I love Metroid but when its not as good as it can be I'm not so much of a fan that I'll delude myself, the last one Echoes did some good things but it wasn't that great. The general flow of the main game was really off because while the series is all about backtracking, Prime 2 took it to the unecessary extreme. Maybe it was an unavoidable thing considering the dark world/light world premise but it could be a chore to play at times. This one fixes all of its problems but it also takes the game into kind of new territory that some purists may not like, but its done in a great way so I think so far its a good thing.
It strikes a great balance of linear gameplay and Metroid's distinct atmosphere of isolation and exploration.
If you haven't played any of them, including Super Metroid it'll be kind of tough to get what that atmosphere is (seriously you should go download Super Metroid now, fill in the story blanks on wikipedia or something but play that classic.) but since this game so far seems to be a mix of the old and new it may be worth checking out as a new guy. MP is kind of the 3D realization of the classic Metroid formula in every way, this one is a cool and reminicent but somewhat new beast. All thats really important to know is the Metroid game at its heart isn't an action game, its an exploration/problem solving game. Even combat and the boss battles is all about figuring out how to beat them as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Since Echoes, Prime has made me think of Fusion often. But 3 is especially reminiscent, I agree. Barebones-wise it's got the same distinctive features.. AI objectives/presence, corrupted suit screwing with Samus's body, then you get Dark Samus from phazon and SA-X from X-parasite. Well that's kind of it outside of the suit design itself. But yeah throughout a lot of the game time I've gotten in I was just like "Fuuuusion," of course it's still very different.
So does anyone not like MP3 yet? I'm not trying to discredit it or anything, it just seems like everyone talking about it is a fanboy, and I want to know if I go buy this am I going to be disappointed because I haven't in all honestly played a metroid game since metroid on the NES. I may be a fangirl but I honestly can say I am not encountering anything that is truly negative about this game right now. And apparently a ton of reviews agree O.o
Shooting takes all of a few minutes to really get used to, then you'll be running, space jumping, shooting, and morph balling on planets as if you were using a GameCube controller, only more comfortable. Though you do actually have to aim when you shoot now (unless you don't use Lock-On Free I think? but I like that feature). But it gives the game a necessary challenge for me.
The implementing of the Wii features are quite clever and fun. You grapple, activate switches and controls, use the Wiimote to jump in morph ball form and it's very responsive. So the controls get a plus from me because it's not overly hard to do, but it's not TOO simple, and it just feels natural.
Gameplay-wise, it is essentially Metroid Prime gameplay..go from room to room, figure out how to solve puzzles to get upgrades that will help you explore more rooms, but it feels fresh. The Prime series can never be nearly as open-ended as the 2D stuff. Rooms are locked and you WILL reach dead ends and scripted events like every game today, but you can still explore freely until you reach that certain dead end, and there are still hidden areas off map to keep you busy. The environments are very cool, you rarely ever see any kind of "repeated" room, even on a starship or a station with generators to the east and west...it's a symmetrical type of design but the rooms are still quite different which is refreshing. And Elysia is just plain fucking beautiful in that mechanical skytown kind of way.
The puzzles require a little more thought now, not everything is totally obvious. I've gotten stuck badly a few times but careful searching and thinking fixed that nicely. Overall, because you have the option to move the gun around while locked on, that makes shooting less easy, and fights in general more challenging. But I like having to rely on my own aim to keep myself alive.
The fight with Mogenar or whoever in the first Leviathan Seed, good god I almost died 5 times. 5 times. You have to use up your energy tanks to use Hyper Mode...and you need Hyper Mode to finish off the guy. And because he is only exposed in weak places briefly I would enter Hyper Mode only to have him not expose his weak spot and just do something stupid for 10 seonds while I slowly wasted my energy supply. Not to mention I was just plain miscalcuating his attacks and getting hit. Energy was in the red and I just basically concentrated solely on dodging until some health units would appear from rocks or his projectile attack. And so I did, and I refilled my tanks enough so that I could give one last push to FUCK HIS WORLD UP. And I did >:3
But man...I was anxious as hell and just going DON'T DIE DON'T DIE PLEASE DON'T DIE YET.
Probably the only thing that hasn't yet stood out to me is music. Right now I can only remember two pieces of music, Brryo's evilish thorn jungle music and the boss battle music with Rundas. Awesome piece of music. But there is also a Phendrana remix which pretty hawtttt.
And apart from that, storywise it is awesome. Not necessarily because of the point of game but because of the actual storytelling. You see more of Samus's world outside of just BOUNTY BOUNTY BOUNTY...she interects with people and Hunters, they know her, they talk to her, they help her, she helps them...hell fellow Hunter Gangrayda calls her "Sammy" playfully...you never got to see that kind of stuff before. Somehow it gives Samus more life to her character. Like...you know she's human but now you realize it even more. After the very first Leviathan Seed battle, the cutscene with Samus and the corruption overtaking her briefly, I was like "whoa I didn't expect that" even though it wasn't anything special per say...just didn't expect her to have such a non-Hunter moment, you know? It's also a little freakish to see Samus's reflection in her scan visor...and then see blue phazon veins start to form around her eyes due to corruption...
Okay so like yeah I am probably only halfway through this game but fangirlish squeeeeeing aside, this has been a wonderful gaming experience so far. I've been waiting for this and it was worth every penny and hour spent waiting in line for the system. If you have a Wii, you really need to get this game. If you like Metroid, you really need to get this game. If you're sacrelicious, YOU REALLY NEED TO PLAY SUPER METROID RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

Ah, of course, "that" kind of way.

Damn, that's cool. I really wanna see how her eyes'd change thanks to her Metroid DNA in Fusion. Ooh, cool three-nuclei'd eyes!
Oh, and I despise all of you in America for getting to play this, and will continue to do so until it comes out in my region. Unfortunately, there's no emoticon (not even Gator's) that expresses my exact feeling of rage, hatred and immense jealosy, so the heart off this shirt will have to do.

Okay here is THE ONE NEGATIVE THING I may possibly ever mention about this game that I forgot last time somehow.
The load times between larger/main rooms are, annoyingly, still there.
Meaning that when Samus shoots open a door, the security shield thing goes away, but when you wait for it to open...it doesn't. Because it's loading the room and enemies and everything else beyond and when it's done it will finally open.
It doesn't happen with every door, only certain ones and is more likely to happen if, say, you're just running through as fast as possible. It's not a huge deal if you like to take your time from room to room. But say you went the wrong direction and have to backtrack and you want to do it as fast as possible...or you have to pass a certain stretch of hallways containing a really annoying enemy type that is a pain in the ass to kill and is also risky to bother fighting with. I'm thinking of those Phazoid things in Bryyo's thorn jungle right now, need Hyper Mode to kill, and they also multiply and attack often and are all around pains in my ass.
I don't want to waste time and energy fighting shit I hate...so I just run and jump and morph ball past as fast as possible taking as little damage as I can. I get through 3 hallways of them, and I come to a larger intersection type of room that will still have them. I shoot the door and...nothing. I am stuck until it loads and then I get attacked because those things followed me from the other end of the room and I'm cornered.
I would hope that the intermittent crap loading would go away on the Wii but eh...there's one negative and NOT hugely detrimental thing there (unless you're low on health and didn't save for awhile when it happened :x). It won't fuck you up royal, it'll just irritate you until you get back into the rest of the game and fall in love again.
I suppose I should play these MP games, now that the series is wrapped up. What's the average completion time?
It took me about 20 hours to beat the first Prime, that was with trying to get all the items. I haven't beat the second yet but I'm sure it's around the same time.

Samus has a very cool (but brief--like one or two seconds) moment around the 10 or 11 hour mark. This game does justice to her character, and the series as a whole.
For anyone wondering what I'm talking about...
partway through the Pirate Homeworld, after the bout with Gandrayda, Gandrayda is slowly dying and switching through all her forms as she does. Her last form is Samus herself in the PED suit, crawling on the ground about to breathe her last. The real Samus winces and looks away. I thought it was a cool moment that tied in the whole "will she be corrupted?" thing very well. Samus is COOL
I haven't been able to play much of it lately because of work, but I'm about 60% of the way through it, and it, for me at least, has eclipsed RE4 as the best game available for the Wii.

The first demo on the shop channel is MP3. Looks like I get to try before I buy... way to catch up to the times, Nintendo!
EDIT: Fuck me, it's just preview videos. Way to be lame in your attempt to catch up, Nintendo!
Beat it last night. Finished with only 83% of the pickups though, and just a little over 14 hours.
The final boss battles were uneventful. Dark Samus was surprisingly easy, as was the Aurora Unit. Hell, the battle with Gandrayda was tougher.

Finished the game a few days ago at 100% on Veteran mode. Probably the best original game on the Wii right now despite some tiny complaints I could make about it. It is really the solo game the fairly lame Hunters wished it could be.
Without diving too deep into spoiler territory, the most immediately impressive thing about the game is, honestly, its controls. The game plays exactly like the hypothetical FPS game that any Nintendo fanboy could have ever hoped for the Wii, and it (and to a point the Wiimake of RE4) could very well be the standard by which all other console FPS controls are judged. I'm seriously not kidding here when I say, being used to the mouse/keyboard setup, that it is practically a revolution to be able to precisely aim at the thing I want to shoot at on a console FPS without having to deal with the weird sensitivity issues that inherently come with dual analog (or any other system), where you're forced to adjust to the control system's limitations rather than any limitations in your own skill. This may not make it the best FPS I've ever played, nor even the best in the Prime series (far from it). And some of the more specific motion related wiimote actions could have used some tweaking maybe. That said, this is the best a console has ever done in emulating the precision of a PC FPS shooter game, and I hope it becomes the template that all other Wii FPSs look to when being designed.
It's probably for the best it plays as well as it does too, because more than the previous Primes, the game really seems like it wants to absorb some of the recent trends of first person shooters. Pseudo-squad based sequences where you're fighting alongside other federation troops, an increasing number of pirate battles, and a more straightforward linearity (complete with cinema sequences) pushes the series even further away from its exploration roots. Which I have mixed feelings about to be honest. On the one hand, the highlights of the game are probably in the more traditional FPS moments, such as...
the opening moment where your defending the fleet against the space pirate attack, as well as that moment near the end where you have to protect the troops as you storm through the space pirate's defenses.
...not to mention that, good art direction or not, the actual worlds are probably the most boring of the three Primes, largely derivatives of previous Metroid games without enough of a unique or fleshed out story or purpose to make them worth exploring, so putting a larger emphasis on scripted action events and trimming on the backtracking works to the game's favor. On the other hand however, much of the appeal of the original Prime, campy as it may have been, was in exploring and discovering the cohesiveness of Tallon IV, as well as putting the pieces of the different lore together, from ancient Chozo artifacts to goofy pirate logs of them mutilating themselves by experimenting with morph ball technology. This game has that lore to be sure, but it is often much more straightforward and simple, and often seems less directly consequential to what you're doing.
I also need to get around to looking at the friend voucher stuff and seeing how it works. I probably have a whole ton of them stashed away that others might want. :-$

Finished last night with 100% and like...17 hours or so (good god with me getting lost a few several times in Elysia..). The final boss fights were really easy :o
There's not much to say I haven't already said. I love this fucking game. The music is a bit disappointing, it's not as good as the others in the Prime series. Basically just rehashed miniboss/ambience music and a few original pieces that felt reminiscent of past themes from MP2. But I did enjoy the Crateria Underground music from Super Metroid in Pirate Homeworld, as well as the Sector 1 (SRX) SR388 music from Metroid Fusion in the final boss fight. It sounded like a strange mesh of that plus Flaaghra from Metroid Prime. Loved it.
I will agree that while I enjoyed the game amazingly and the design and art, the actual planets/destinations are not as interesting to me as all of Tallon IV, or even most of Aether. I know that for me, even in Bryyo and the seeds, the environments felt very manmade and were missing that natural exotic feel that I really, really loved from Tallon overworld, Phendrana, Magmoor caverns, Torvus bog (even with the industrial ramps and stuff, that place was my fave and sooooo atmospheric)... I still had fun finding shortcuts and opening up new areas, exploring the derelict Valhalla, etc.
This game had a few moments that really made me jump, too...
opening a door in Valhalla/Elysia and having a dead body husk disintegrate on me...walking around the Valhalla and seeing a phazon metroid dragging a dead space pirate...nearly get eaten by two gross looking things while jumping down shafts in Phaaze
The Chozo observatory...veeeeeeeeeery helpful <3
I really wish the fucking diorama extras had a closer zoom.
And even though I enjoy the "lonliness" of exploring worlds in Metroid and would prefer it stayed that way most of the time, I really did enjoy all the interection with others this time around. I'm sure I said it before but it just gives an entire new level of human awesomeness to Samus that we don't usually get to see.
I love this gaaaaaaame.
I NEED FRIEND CREDITS >:

K i finally beat the game with 100%(yeah school has kinda been kicking my ass) and I would rank it as being more enjoyable than Echoes but still nowhere near the league of the first Prime game. I'm sure most of what I'm gonna say has already been said, but I'm too lazy to read this entire thread, so in a nutshell(POSSIBLE SPOILERS):
Pros
-Ridley's back baby!!
-Most of the voice acting was great
-Really dug the use of fellow troopers
-fighting corrupted Rundas, Ghor, and Gandrayda was fun
-Bosses were a tad difficult, but nowhere near as frustrating or convoluted as Echoes
-The pirates got a prominent role again(They were virtually nonexistent in Echoes)
- Innovative use of the gunship
-hypermode is a lot of fun
-logbook is finally organized
Cons
-Aiming took some getting used to
-ridiculous load time on the doors
-music seemed a bit generic
-still no Kraid....dammit
-Screw attack is once again primarily used for crossing gaps instead of shredding enemies
-the credit system seems out of place
-several of the upgrades/expansions are unnecessary
-most of the friend vouchers are damn near impossible to get
Final ranking: 7/10

Beat it with 98% and just over 20 hours. I missed an e-tank and a ship missile, and damn if I didn't search that ENTIRE map for those little white dots. Ah well. I'll finish Veteran with 100% :D
I'm going to side with pretty much everyone else and say that this was my 2nd favorite Prime game, after the first one. It was the easiest to play because the controls were GOD, but lacked the atmospheric, immersed feel of Prime 1. And I don't know why everyone has been hatin' on the soundtrack, but I think this game had great music. I especially enjoyed the callbacks to Super Metroid, as well as the "Dread" reference. I would have liked to see more of a lead-in to Metroid II though, since that game is supposed to be next in the series chronologically. But perhaps this means that there will be another game inbetween...?

Bryyo Ice, Skinner ;)
I mostly don't find anything particularly engaging about the soundtrack because only a few pieces are actually original but still not entirely spectacular to me. The rest is reused and remixed ambience (like the mostly boring Phazon mine theme from Prime 1) or a small few themes from other games, but no one is a stranger to the Super Metroid theme and Dark Samus's remixed theme is not any better than the original to me. Bryyo Ice has the very faintest recognizable sampling of Phendrana's Ice Valley but was still just icy ambience. The only themes that stood out to me that I really loved were Bryyo's Thorn Jungle, Rundas and Gandrayda's themes, the remix of Crateria Underground, and the remix of the intro/Sector 1 SRX from Metroid Fusion (practically stood up in excitement hearing that theme appear even though it is pretty much Flaaghra). Elysia's western town theme is pretty as well but overall I find the soundtrack to be much weaker compared to 1 and 2, and especially to 1.

If you have the preview videos from the Shop Channel (they're free) then you've seen the Aurora Unit video, and so you may have seen this nifty little reference here...after playing the game itself I had thought of this connection after reading Elysian log files but didn't even notice this when I watched the previews before playing.
