Very, very tough. I'll give it to GTAIII, but only because I'm kinda a retro RE fan.

Well, as much as I like the Grand Theft Auto series, I just can't deny my love for Resident Evil 4. Both are great games, and while GTA III has the controversial notoriety, I more or less chose RE 4 because it managed to boldly go against a formula that hadn't been changed for nearly a decade for the series, and in the end it worked.
RE4 was awesome to say the least. Without a doubt the best third-person shooter ever and maybe the best shooter ever. I of course can't wait for number 5.

Well I can quite comfortably say I had more fun playing Resi 4 than GTA 3.
GTA 3 may have the free roaming thing going for it, but that doesn't necessarily make it better than a game with a set path, because if it wasn't so tightly set, it wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun.
And 3 doesn't really offer that much in the way of side distractions, it doesn't interest me that much that I can drive around a city aimlessly instead of doing missions.

RE4 is the greatest action/horror game ever made, it's one of those games I can play over and over again, such a great ass-kicking experience.
GTA3 is a fantastic, groundbreaking game, but it's not the best of the franchise.

But it was groundbreaking...

Easy for me I never really liked GTA 3 so I voted RE4.

They're both games that reinvented their respective series' in a huge way.
I just chose RE4 because my personal experience with it was just funner. In all other respects they both have pretty level traits. Although I think the gameplay of RE4 may be better tweaked, although they're both very different games.

Purely a personal thing, I'm voting GTAIII because I found it a much more fun game to play, and for the fact that it was groundbreaking--every other 3d sandbox pretty much has it to thank.

Can GTA 3 really be called groundbreaking, I mean it was a perfectly natural evolution for the series, and Driver had already somewhat taken the gta formula and made a 3d game out of it on ps1 I know it's not really the same thing, but I just don't understand why people were so suprised by it, as if such a thing was unthinkable.

GTAIII wasn't just a 3D driving game and by "not really the same thing" I think you mean completely not the same thing.
GTAIII was the most open "sandbox" game of it's time. No "side distractions" in GTAIII? Christ there was dozens of mini games, things to find, and unlock... it wasn't just "drive around the city".
Now granted, I've never played RE4 and it might be a good game... but I've pumped dozens of hours into each GTA game and can still pick one up and be entertained.

Yes but much of the open sandbox thing had been done in the ps1 games. And I didn't say there were no side distractions, it's just that some reviews make it sound like there's literally anything you can do, and everything is interactive. That's what I'm responding to when I say "There's not really that many side distractions" there's lots of things to do yes, but they tend to just involve driving and shooting.
I'm not denying It's a great achievment and I love the game. I'm just saying why I wasn't blown away by it.
