View Full Version : Anyone interested in a VGM tourney?

I suggest a big video game music tournament, akin to the one being held at the moment. Not that I'm volunteering to throw together such a thing.

Hmm. That could probably be arranged, though it would depend on how many people would actually be interested in participating.

Yeah, thats the problem. I think game music is pretty niche. I think the board has enough with the sheer size of the already existing music tourney for the time being anyways.

Obviously it wouldn't happen any time soon, certainly not until both the music and game tournaments are done. And it wouldn't need a separate forum, anyway. If any people are interested they can just say so and we'll see what happens.

I would love to see something like that, especially if quick links to the tracks were provided like in the music tournament.

Well if I'm around and it happens I'd love to help out. Game music's a very underestimated source of some great compositions. I mean, Theme of Love from FFIV is taught in Japanese school music programs.

Split this off from The Music Of The Donkey Kong Country Games (http://www.nohomers.net/showthread.php?t=63912).

So yeah get to it. I don't recall seeing quite that many people being interested in VGM...but I think it could be possible to muster at least a minimum 64 songs with enough people for some kind of contest in the future.

I'd be down, just reduce the scope a little, 5 songs an entry instead of 10, and take fewer submissions. That should make it a little better to handle.

fwiw, right now I'd pick
Doom - E1D1 (which was one of my music contest entries, but was switched out)
Duke Nukem - Grabbag
And some others I can' thinkg of right now :X

guessing a video game music tourney would be better than the current musical showdown.

definetly most mario game, donkey kong country, maybe castlevania, some mortal kombat, and my favorite game music was streets of rage 2

So you want suggestions already?

I think 64 songs may be a bit much, but if you want suggestions now I can certainly try to put a small contribution together.

No, I don't want suggestions. I want to know if people are interested for this to happen in the future.

And if even only 6 or 7 people are on board, all I have to do is say "nom 10 songs" and I've already got 60-70 right there. I think 64 is a decent enough target for what I'm expecting to be a small group of people who actually care.

I see. Well if this happens and when you all are ready as I said I'll contribute something. I may have to find an mp3 or two but that won't be a problem.

I'm down, natch. I'll just use the 10 songs I had in mind for next years GFF contest, teehee.

Doom - E1D1 (which was one of my music contest entries, but was switched out)
It was retitled the correct "M24" by Clint Mansell after I was given an mp3 with no track name, artist or album. It was still in MS.

Aw man, I'd love that. I have like...a billion songs that I could volunteer as options, most of which have a song saved on my hard drive. Best thing is, that seeing as VG music is pretty much public-domain (as opposed to playing an actual game), people would be able to base their votes off listening to the track, and then matching it up to the context in which it was found. For instance, it would be unfair to judge the Click Clock Wood melody without actually realising that each version takes place in a mystical wood, with varying seasons.

Yes, I'd be very interested.

Yeah I'd be interested if/when this happens.

I'm definately in. I also think waiting until the other two contests slow down is wise.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that back in the day I'd record video game music and make a mix tape of it? I have some good nominations when we get around to it.

I am in also. I think this is a great idea and would certainly be interesting.
