Super Mario 64 (N64)

vs.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)

The obvious bias in the poll question should allude to the choice I made. I regard Super Mario 64 as the second finest game ever made. It's simply outstanding, and even though I've never played MGS3, I'm fairly confident that Super Mario 64 is much, much better than it could ever hope to be. At the very least, the achivement that Mario reached in this title puts it through my default.

Mario, although my only experience of playing it is the DS version. I really should check out the original game on Virtual Console.

I've never played Metal Gear Solid 3, but if it were up against a weaker title, I'd probably vote for it out of sheer respect for the series. However, it's up against one of the most legendary games ever game, Super Mario 64. It's accessible, curvable, and colorful, all while giving Mario the worthy jump into 3D that he deserved. Only a handful of other pre-existing gaming series have made the leap to the next dimension with the grace that Mario has.

Wow we're picking up the pace in this thing arn't we?

God...this is such a painful one because I love MGS3 to death, but my common sense says Mario 64 deserves it. You know what though? I know 64 is going to win this anyways so I'm sticking it out for the Big Boss till the end. Also because, aside from Tetris which like...belongs to everyone this is the final non-Nintendo game to make it this far. I'm proud of it.

Complete with dramatic use of the Snake Eater song for its last stand.

MGS3 all the way. I've played all of 1 hour of SM64... even after buying on VC. It's just got no hook to keep me on it.

SM64 is certainly deserving but I'm going with MGS3 because of what a genius delight it is to play, every single second of it, even the "boring waiting for a guard to walk away" is enjoyable. Lord knows there are so many little things in MGS3 that enhance the entire thing to be one giant joygasm.

Yeah, the only thing that doesn't make this choice easier than easy is the fact that Mario 64's revolutionaryness is overshadowed by every game that followed. But the fact remains that Mario 64 perfected 3d gaming, and everyone else built on top of it. I remember the experience of playing it for the first time, one of the few truly "wow" moments in my video game experiences.

What do you mean? Nintendo is expectedly dominating, but there's still a number of non-Nintendo games this round. Silent Hill 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Halo, Castlevania: SOTN, and GTA3. This can be expanded if we're talking third party stuff too. Unless you just mean in this set...

Slightly favor MGS3 here, though it is very close. It's probably the peak in the series in regards to its story (and maybe storytelling, though in some ways I know that's not saying much), and it crafted some of the most memorable set pieces/bosses I can think of in semi-recent memory (the sniper duel with The End, the river of dead soldiers piece with The Sorrow, and the final battle with The Boss to name some).

Yes, when I posted that I was half asleep. Its not a good idea to do that. lol So yeah I made a mistake, and by the time I realized it I figured too many had seen it and I just decided to let it be and live with my shame.

I'm glad some are sticking it out with the greatest soldier ever.

Super Mario 64 was an amazing game that I played countless numbers of times. It inspired Super Mario Galaxy, which looks like is going to be another Nintendo masterpiece.

'Sid you'd vote against Super Mario 64 though. I mean...anyone who did is either sorry for the piece of crap going against it, or is just plain foolish!

Its a really fun site. Not just MGS legos but lego recreations of all sorts of other things.
