Mario 3 is my pick.
I'm not even going to bother finding out what EarthBound is.

I adore both of these games, I really do. Super Mario Brothers 3 is the perfect Mario game in my opinion, big worlds, crazy power-ups, lots of challenge and secrets, it did everything right. Earthbound is one of my favorite Super NES RPG's, with it's terrific sense of humor, unique gameplay and exploration style, and trippy settings. It hurts to vote against either, but I do think that Mario 3 has few worries here (it has The Wizard backing it up, The Wizard!), so I'm going to vote for Earthbound out of pity.

Shame Earthbound stands next to no chance of winning here because it's probably my favorite JRPG, and maybe the only one from the 2D era whose story and point hasn't become increasingly childish or silly with age - despite US censorship. Smart little game that's part satire and part biogame (in that much of it is about Shigesato Itoi's own interests, tastes, and experiences), pulling Kojimaisms with the game and the player before they became cool with MGS (and with more of a point than the older Metal Gears), rewarding exploration for exploration's sake - especially during the ending, and occasionally just pulling a mindfuck out of nowhere that can turn its comedy into drama, nostalgia trip, or even a tiny bit of psychological horror. Really does not deserve to be as obscure as it is, maybe one of my top ten games.

Yeah Earthbound is just, great. I acknowledge that its an aquired taste, but those who do enjoy it just love it.
Its just such a great concept. Its kind of like the Simpsons in how it takes place in an exaggerated, somewhat kookier version of our own world, and you're controlling 4 kids with psychic powers (Well, not Jeff.) and other nifty abilities trying to stop an Alien invasion. Its a simplistic RPG in system and look which may turn some off unfortunatly, but it had some great features. Its mostly known though for having some of the funniest as well as craziest situations an RPG has ever put you in. You fight hippies that power up with hot sauce, aliens, zombies, meet the Blues Brothers (or something similar), find a lost land, go to a town that exists only in your main characters' head, and the last boss battle is mind boggling and thats not all. Its quirky as hell, with just the right amount of a darker tinge to it.
But its also out of all the RPG's I've played, one of the few to truly capture a fun sense of adventure. And it even has some pretty genuine feeling in it, especially later.
I love it to death, this is seriously a really hard choice. I can't decide. I can say this for those who do play EB one day, its not like any other RPG you'll ever play.

I believe it was the first round somewhere where I said SMB3 is perfection amongst the 8-bit Marios, NES games in general, and could possibly be one of the best games of all time, and guess what? It totally is.

This thread needs more references to "The Wizard."

yeah earthbound for me as well. not to say mario wasnt more fun, but earthbound had so much you had to do. if you were able to make it through the first 3 hours you would be ok, lots of people gave up on it way too early.
