I admire the spirit, fun, originality, and innovation of a series like Katamari, but I can't go against Metroid here. You can't go wrong with a game that has a vast world, numerous items and power-ups to find, great open-ended challenge, multiple endings, and a twist at the end (if Metroid had come out in today's world, the fact that Samus is a woman would have been spoiled over the Internet after a couple of days, but back then it was a big surprise). Justin Bailey is still one of the coolest password cheats of all time.

Easy vote for Metroid. Fun and so challenging that I was only able to pass the game this last year. Yep, never did it as a kid. Back in the day I never had enough missiles to kill the mother brain...
