Manning wins, what an easy game for him :P
i really underestimated the colts today, especially the defense. figured the colts' horrible rushing defense plus the chiefs having larry johnson in the backfield would be enough for the chiefs to pull off the upset.
StrideR
01-06-2007, 06:19 PM
Any coach with half a brain would have prepared a defense specifically for Larry Johnson, especially the colts knowing their own weakness. A half decent passing game for the Chiefs would have been enough for said upset.

pennington was impressive today. they just couldn't get things done in the red zone, and that backward pass was a huge turning point.
pats can't have sluggish second and third quarters like they had in this one next week, though.
lol, I'll be honest, the NFC was more fun to watch, but it'll be interesting to see the old Baltimore team take on the new one :)

Is anyone else really excited about the two AFC matchups next week?
Indy v. Balt
Offense v. Defense
New England v. San Diego
Two very good teams with tons of subplots.
Should be two awesome games; by contrast, neither of the NFC games seem that appealing. Seattle-Chicago, blech.
Especially looking forward to the New England game. I think they come out on top: Offensively, I think they'll be able to run the ball effectively enough to take some pressure off the passing game, and they'll be able to put up enough points to win.
The defensive side is the more interesting matchup (isn't is always with the Patriots?) IMO. New England's D-line/front seven did a great job of getting into the backfield yesterday, completely shutting down the Jets' running attack and harassing Pennington all game. Seymour seemed especially disruptive - he was all over the fucking place. You have to believe that they'll be able to limit - if not shut down completely - LT and force Rivers to win it through the air. And therein, I feel, lies the rub - how effective can Rivers be against New England's secondary? I think that will be the key battle of the game, and if the Patriots had their secondary at full strength, I'd say they would win.
Another interesting thing to watch will be how the Chargers respond if they go down early. I know they had amazing comebacks against Cincy and Denver, but one could argue that that was before they had become such overpowering favorites, before all of the pressure was on them, before everyone started "crowning their ass", so to speak, and that they might act differently this time around.
During the Pats/Jets game today, they ran a stat that said that "The Pats' defense has allowed 0 points on opening-game drives in the playoffs under Bellichek". I wonder how Rivers/Marty react if the Pats lead early: will Rivers regress ala Rothlisberger in his first playoffs? Will Marty wrestle control of the plays from his coordinators? Will Rivers/Marty choke under the pressure? It's going to be a great game, for sure.

other than that, they both had roughly the same performance this week, and the same result: a win with a shitty game from the QB. brady also threw more INTs, if you want to make this a shallow battle of stats, though. point being NEITHER deserves a hint of praise for their performances this weekend.

I agree and disagree. Neither of them should be proud of how they played. Brady was jittery and made costly mistakes, ultimately relying on luck, his own team's defensive plays and errors of the opposing team, same as Manning. However, coming from behind to beat San Diego at home is no easy feat, especially when the Chargers defense seemed to have a solution for NE's passing and rushing game from the get go.
Dead Nigga Storage
01-14-2007, 10:33 PM
but the comeback had little to nothing to do with what BRADY did, which is why i hate the media's reaction to every win he got. if the man was 2-2 in career post season appearances or something to that effect, there wouldn't be a person discussing brady getting a win today. it would be STRICTLY about the chargers blowing the game. brady needed second chances or charger miscues ALL game to get the results he got. the espn article about today's game is almost all about brady stepping up in the clutch and doing what matters, with the caption below his photo noting only the 280 yard, 2TD performance, and not the 3 costly interceptions, or inability to ever hit his stride.
StrideR
01-14-2007, 10:59 PM
Eh... the drive that ended the first half, the long pass to Caldwell in the 4th and that 2 pt. conversion. Those were clutch plays. You can also argue that NE made the most of the slim pickin's they were afforded by the Chargers.
I do agree articles so far have underplayed the contribution of SD's penalties and errors to the win. Even less mention has been made of the offensive line that pretty much removed Merriman from the picture.
Dead Nigga Storage
01-14-2007, 11:10 PM
fuck merriman. he never got enough shit for the steroids, and he's already back to being glamorized.
the two point conversion wasn't brady's, though. and the touchdown he got to tie the game was the result of being given the ball back off a charger fumble. but i've given up on objective sports media.
StrideR

the play was not something to give any credit to brady for. faulk made sure not to move a second to soon, saw the outside wasn't open, found his opening up the middle, and made the play. i think that was his point.

Fine, I'll concede then, brilliant play by Faulk, the snapper, the offensive line and everyone else except Tom Brady.
Dead Nigga Storage
01-15-2007, 12:52 AM
hahahaha. hardly the point. it just merely wasn't an example of anything brady did right. if the chargers could hold onto the ball, you were looking at a 1TD, 3INT day. as is, he ends up with something like a 54 rating which very well reflects his state of play. the articles written for the game don't match what happened IN the game. i think that's all anyone here meant.

01-15-2007, 06:21 AM
with the caption below his photo noting only the 280 yard, 2TD performance, and not the 3 costly interceptions, or inability to ever hit his stride.
from a journalism point of view, a caption below a smiling brady mentioning 3 picks and his below average performance would be pretty damn laughable and confuse the reader.
I would love to see an article you would write about the game, because even if you focus on the chargers choking you still, no matter what, need to give the winning team & its star(s) their due in the beginning of the article.

I think Manning and Brady will continue to play like ass next week. It will probably come down to who doesn't fuck it up at the end for their team.
I dunno. Colts are playing at home, while Brady has never lost in a dome. It really comes down to how much pressure each defense can mount against the quarterbacks. As good as the Colts' D has been lately, I don't think they can pulverize the Pats offensive line. The Pats are likely going to play to keep Manning off the field as long as possible and the defense is going to be less focused on the colts running game than it was with the Chargers, so Addai might have some room to breathe in this game.

from a journalism point of view, a caption below a smiling brady mentioning 3 picks and his below average performance would be pretty damn laughable and confuse the reader.
I would love to see an article you would write about the game, because even if you focus on the chargers choking you still, no matter what, need to give the winning team & its star(s) their due in the beginning of the article.the picture i was referring to last night was one of brady dropping back to throw a pass with the ball still in hand.
and yeah, you can write about the winning team in the article (and should), but it's a lot of bull to pretend the game wasn't 75% charger-choke, 25% patriots doing something about charger-choke.
chris berman has a raging boner right now. i'm interested to see how the colts d performs (given their playoff improvements) and if the patriots will rely again on brady's arm or attempt a more aggressive running attack.
i guess i'm rooting for the patriots, even though i did want to see the chargers win the afc.

I am pulling for the colts...would love to see manning get his shot at the big game. dungey as well, pats annoy me even more. jesus just interecept the pass and get down...then the chargers win. dammit get down after the int.

i'm rooting for the colts here. mainly because i don't want to face the pats in the superbowl, but also because i like peyton and i'm tired of new england dominance.

peyton has caused my teams trouble since his college days. brady cost my college team a bowl win and ended my nfl team's playoff hopes once (i believe). he's the lesser of two evils. the saints are the only remaining team i care for at all. the pats have won too much and i'm on the fence about chicago.
a sick part of me loves it when peyton is referred to as a "numbers quarterback" and i enjoy making douchetastic statements like "atleast marino went to a super bowl.

Don't worry. In about 10 years or so, when Brady/Belichick retires, you can have your superbowl back.
For a sixth round draft pick that no one gave a hope of getting anywhere, playing for a team that was written off, Brady deserves every ring he can get.

few franchises are ever written off...they were AFC champs within a spitting distance from 2000. hardly forgotten. wonder what that would have made indy in 1998.
but he was pretty meh at michigan, considering he was just more or less a system QB.

what a game. i haven't been this crushed in years.
lots of things just didn't go right at critical times. troy brown pass interference. pats playing prevent just before halftime. getting the ball back with three minutes left and calling three passes. big plays to dwight clark. lack of pass rush.
pats just couldn't hold them in that second half and indy deserved it.
go bears. should be a good game.
Yeah, that was probably the most exciting AFC playoff game I've ever seen (possible exclusion: Music City Miracle).

that peyton manning. what a fucking chokejob of a leader. and the colts, i mean good lord. how many opportunities could they ever get. i have no idea what espn will do with themselves this week, with the patriots...beat...for the third straight time by those backwards colts. i wonder if the colts owning pats angle will ever be used. or maybe...could peyton ever win a BIG game?
nah. just the biggest championship game comeback...you know...ever.
