Considering he was ill for a while now, Fox whipped this one up:

He gets his own thread because he did a lot of things that shaped a lot of different sports. He founded the AFL, which later led to its merger with the NFL, which he co-orchestrated. The merger made the NFL one of the most powerful leagues in all of professional sport.
He also made a large effort to spread the other kind of football in the US, as one of the founders of MLS-- he owned two teams as well, Columbus Crew and FC Dallas.
The AFC championship trophy and soccer's U.S. Open Cup are named for him.
He was also a founding investor in the Chicago Bulls (omgbiased), coined the term Super Bowl, and he's in the Pro Football, International Tennis and National Soccer halls of fame.
Quite possibly one of the most important figures in modern sports.
