Dude, I'm sorry but I gotta jump in here. Helen has not been made out to be a generally nice person.

-In Mysterious Voyage of Homer as you said, there was that.
-Marge in Chains, there's her scene there.
-In Twisted World of Marge, she is incredibly venomous and excluding of Marge.
-There are at least a dozen episodes where she has a scene spreading a rumor about someone, and its often condescending...exaggerated...and slanderous.
-Even TIMOTHY admits she's not a particularly great person. Oh Helen, call off your dogs.

I'm not saying she's evil, or that she has no redeeming qualities...but the fact is, is we haven't seen any redeeming qualities come from this woman. I want you to name me one single scene in the entire series where she's not:
1. Slandering someone behind their backs
2. Saying something snotty to a person's face.
3. Giving into panic, (Yes "Please think of the children!!1" falls under this.)
4. Doing nothing.

Any redeeming scene whatsoever. Otherwise...while its perfectly fine to like the character I really disagree with the notion that "she never says anything ill intentioned" because thats certainly not what I've gotten. Sure you can use your imagination like we all do with lesser defined characters, and assume some of her possible better qualities but so far we haven't even been really given hints of any sort. Its understandable since she doesn't appear often, but she's certainly not "rarely ill intentioned". A gossiper by default is ill intentioned.

If you ask me, Jessica's "bad side" I bet you anything comes from Helen while her redeeming qualities come from Tim.

Well, since I have probably been using my imagination in terms with most of my stories involving Helen, I must point out a few things.

- I did mention 'Mysterious voyage of Homer' before.
- 'Marge in chains' was a good point. I can't believe I forgot that... oh, wait, yes I can.
- I can hardly say Marge was being friendly either in 'The twisted world of Marge Simpson', but everyone was being bitchy, so I guess that would be the case.

Where are these other dozen episodes? 'Life in the fast lane' is the only one I can think of. In fact, she hardly even speaks anymore. But, then again, here are some scenes where she behaves in a slightly better manner:

- Itchy and Scratchy and Marge. Decide what you want on this one, but when she mentions the David statue, she obviously gives a damn.
- The War of the Simpsons. She's actually quite friendly to Marge, although Marge is wary of her (with good reason?)
- A streetcar named Marge. Again, she acts quite friendly, although we don't see her that often.
- Bart's girlfriend. She wasn't that[I] bad in Bart's girlfriend. Like before, she was polite enough, although Bart actually insulted her at one point. :-$
- Mother Simpson. Who was it who came with the Rev and Ned Flanders when they thought Homer was dead?
- In Marge we trust. She doesn't get much screen time in that one (apart from two flashback scenes) but the scene where she is concerned about Timothy proves that she does care about [I]something.
- The monkey suit. She was suggesting ideas for her husband, commenting on how they could use the infomation they'd learnt, and helping him (and I'm not just talking about the making out here ;)).

There you go, Kiyosuki. 7 scenes. She hardly got any screen time before this, and if she got developed more (perhaps a whole episode, as I've suggested many times) then she could become an interesting character. Not everyone on the show is going to be perfect. Compared to Agnes Skinner, for example, Helen is kind.

I can see what you mean...although the majority of these she's kind of not really doing a whole lot. The fact she's used so little does leave a huge lot to the imagination so it can pretty much go any way. Since she's such a third tier character I you have plenty of room to look at it any other way. But I do still think that its a bit much to specifically say she's kind or never does anything maliciously, because she's obviously no saint either. That is one thing thats pretty apparent. No one in the show really is. Thats all I'm really saying.
