BREAKING SPORTS NEWS: Arnold Red Auerbach, named the greatest coach in the history of the NBA and, for more than half a century, the competitive and occasionally abrasive personification of the Boston Celtics, has died at 89. --Developing
Really sad news, even if we knew it was coming sooner or later.

Can't be terribly surprised, but he was a legend to the entire sport, and a great competitor. RIP, Red.

he was the first great nba coach... great contributor to the sport. rip.
Sad to see him go. He practically defined the position of NBA head coach.
RIP :(

fuck you guys. PHIL. motherfucking zen. nine titles in twelve years. yes, he had extremely talented teams, but he kept all the egos in check and made it work. i am confident he will help build the lakers to a big contendenter again, built around kobe. they already showed great improvement last year, his first year back.

good for him for keeping egos in check. i don't care. rodman, pippen, jordan, and then shaq and kobe. they went absolutely nowhere when they practically bought the championship with malone and payton, so maybe his "ego-checking" wasn't always gonna be good enough? i'm not gonna say phil wasn't a great coach, but red won even when he wasn't the best team in the league (1966, for example). jackson never had an excuse NOT to win.
oh yeah, and...8 straight! no more arguing in the death thread. red wins, and he didn't have a douche personality.

I'm glad that Red never had to see the Celtics Dance Squad

even I can admit red was a superior coach to phil. phil has assistants who know more about the game than him. phil is great at managing personalities, not at x's and o's...red scouted, drafted, signed and coached all by himself. seriously the guy was about as good as it gets.
