NEW YORK - A small plane crashed into an Upper East Side high-rise Wednesday, shooting flames out the windows, raining debris on the sidewalks below and rattling New Yorkers' nerves exactly one month after the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Police confirmed 2 people are dead.
Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for
FBI, said there was no indication of terrorism, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports were operating normally.
"The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of
Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke.
The aircraft struck the 20th floor of a building on East 72nd Street, said Fire Department spokeswoman Emily Rahimi. Witnesses said the crash caused a loud noise, and flames were seen shooting out of the windows.
"It's a mob scene with police and helicopters circling," said Sandy Teller, watching from his apartment a block away. "There's a dozen ambulances and lots of firefighters waiting on 72nd, on the corner. There's lots of stretchers ready, gurneys. And lots of emergency people waiting."
The crash struck fear in a city devastated by the attacks of Sept. 11 five years ago. Witnesses said sirens echoed across the east side of Manhattan as emergency workers rushed to the scene. The crash triggered a loud bang. Broken glass and debris was strewn around the neighborhood.
"There's a sense of helplessness," Teller said. "Cots and gurneys, waiting. It's a mess."
The
Federal Aviation Administration said it was too early to determine what type of aircraft was involved, or what might have caused the crash in the middle of a hazy October afternoon.
Richard Drutman, a professional photographer who lives on the building's 11th floor, said he was speaking on the telephone when he felt the building shake.
"There was a huge explosion. I looked out my window, and saw what appeared to be pieces of wings, on fire, falling from the sky," Drutman said.
He and his girlfriend quickly evacuated the building.
The address of the building is 524 E. 72nd Street — a 50-story condominium tower built in the late 1980s and located near Sotheby's auction house. The Belaire Condo, developed by William Zeckendorf Jr., has 183 apartments, many of which sell for more than $1 million.
Several lower floors of the building are occupied by doctors and administrative offices, as well as guest facilities for family members of patients at the Hospital for Special Surgery, hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Fisher said. No patients were in the high-rise building and operations at the hospital a block away weren't affected, Fisher said. The Hospital for Special Surgery specializes in orthopedic operations.

It always fascinates me watching the media react to situations like these since 9/11. Any major explosion/crash happens in New York, all the media outlets jump on it because it could be terrorism, and they treat it like it's the most important story in the world. But then the word comes down that it's not an attack, and the hysteria comes to a screeching halt. It's like, "Oh, well, this is, like, a tragedy and all, but it wasn't some foreigner named Abdul killing in the name of Allah, so really, this is nothing. Sorry for making you miss General Hospital for this, folks." Yes, I admit, finding out it wasn't terrorism was a relief for me, but it's no less of a tragedy. And a baseball player being involved doesn't make it any more of a tragedy.
I don't think the media people are being intentionally callous when they do this, and it's not quite as disgusting to me as Brit "Hmmm, time to buy" Hume on the morning of the London bombings. But this whole "THIS COULD BE THE OTHER SHOE DROPPING oh wait it's not terror you can stop caring now," they really need to look at themselves and maybe next time not stomp on the hysteria accelerator so hard when it happens and then, if it's not a terrorist attack, just slowly bring the foot down on the brake with the thought that, even though it's not an Osama bin Laden production, there are still people out there who died, were injured, lost loved ones, or were otherwise traumatized by what happened, and they shouldn't be immediately hurled to the margins just because the incident that caused their pain was "only an accident."

I had heard of Lidle before, but can't ever recall him actually pitching. It's obviously a surprise (much like Darryl Kile dying a few years ago, although that wasn't a plane crash,) but finally one of ESPN's "SportsCenter Breaking News" actually matters (ie: isn't about TO.)

it's a shame it happened...but the sept 11 tie in's i could do without...and was it necessary for every fucking police car in manhattan to have its sirens on? i work at the world financial center and i could hear sirens on the 34th floor...it's just a random accident and the city goes into full fucking alert for 3 hours?
Man, really sad. Yeah, it's Munson all over again. My condolences to his family and Yankee fans as well.
RIP :(
Edit: Moving into SPORTS and thread title changed as Lidle has been confirmed dead.
don't know what else to say. didn't really know much about lidle, but he seemed like a good guy, albeit a bit outspoken. just a tragedy... sad day.
shocking, sad to hear. RIP.

Um... it's fair to say that if you live in New York and see a plane crash into a building, it's going to conjure up some memories. There's certainly legitimate reason to report this with emphasis, simply because of the fact that planes crashing into New York is always going to have a certain psychic effect for the conceivable future.
Is it a big deal in the grand scheme of things? Absolutely not. But talking about how you don't care at all is hopefully reacting to the perceived media-overblowingness over more significant stories, I hope, because this would certainly be a significant or possibly even intense news event for someone in that area of New York at the time.
I have a friend at NYU, and the first thing I checked when I heard about this is that he was alright and nowhere near where it happened.
Exactly Jolly. A plane crashes into a building in New York of all places, of course parallels are going to be drawn to 9/11, thats only natural.

Um...
Just about every headline I've seen mentions the death of two people and every single one names one of the deceased, Cory Lidle.
Maybe in Austrailia's second rate coverage they arent mentioning the dead but in America we are well aware of the fatalities involved.

haha second rate coverage. if a plane crashed into a building in australia it wouldn't even get a mention on american news.
Maybe in Austrailia's second rate coverage they arent mentioning the dead but in America we are well aware of the fatalities involved.
I could go into how Australias "second rate" news media is far more informative, objective and nowhere near as sensationalised as the US media, but I wont. But I will say that in Australias media coverage of this, there has been very little reference to 9/11, and most of the coverage has centered around a dead baseball player.

why is everyone saying that the media is retarded for drawing 9/11 parallels? a plane hits a manhattan high rise, and the first thought in MY mind is always going to be about whether or not it was intentional, and i think it's sorta...dumb if it isn't on someone else's.
and for the record, it would make the news if a plane hit a building in australia, because it did when the same thing happened in italy a few years ago...and it was a top story. can we stop with the shitty stereotypes, both about the american media AND the australian media (jim, smyce) and talk about something...relevant? for all of those who think it is over-covered, fine: it'll disappear in a few days or a week or so. for those who don't get caught up in such superficial aspects and realize that a group of people was KILLED in a very uncommon and tragic way, drop off your condolences in the thread, ditch the al qaeda jokes, and be on your way.
