View Full Version : ESPN has sunk to a new low.
Over the years, ESPN has shown a lot of stupid programs. From dominoes to fish weighing, from darts to female billiards tricks, and from spelling bees to tree chopping, ESPN has never been at a loss for terrible programming.
But today, they have sunk to a new low.
Let me present to you: Sport Stacking

Yes, that picture is accurate. And yes, ESPN just spent an hour of programming showing kids stacking cups.
I didn't think they could go any lower, but they proved me wrong. I can't wait to see what's next.

awh, you're just upset because you're not good enough to be a pro. cup stacker.
Besides, they're still better than any other sports broadcaster I've ever seen.

Yep, looks more interesting than baseball. And poker, darts, curling, fishing, car racing, draft lotteries, golf....

I'd watch.
I pretty much have totally distanced myself from ESPN except when I want to watch an actual sporting event on there (LLWS, Sunday Night Baseball, Monday Night Football). I even switched to si.com because I couldn't take that piece of shit espn.com anymore.

i think the eating contests are pretty non-broadcast worthy. if i want to see someone stuff their face I will go to the local all-you-can-eat.
I wonder how much a 30 second ad spot during competitive stacking would run me. If it's less than $100, a commercial for the No Homers Club will be in the works.

Sure, competitive stacking is pretty pathetic but you know that if children are competiting in it then there is a group of parents behind the scenes forcing the kids to compete and getting in scraps with the coach when the child doesn't get enough stacking-time.
And hasn't ESPN aired spelling bees. At least stacking requires hand-eye coordination and speed. The basics of athletics and sport, but spelling???

hey, is ozzie guillen gonna have to choke a fag?
and why's everyone so upset about this? espn has always had some quirky stuff since day one.

I've heard they played CFL (Canadian Football League) in the early days. How much must one person like football to actually watch a CFL game when you live in a country that doesn't have any CFL teams.
Spartan
08-28-2006, 08:45 AM
well the CFL had an expansion south in the '90's
but if someone in america watches/follows the CFL, it would be an oddity, but i don't think it's that out of question for it to ever be on espn.
when espn first started out, they pretty much specialized in airing somewhat odd sporting events (world's strongest man comes to mind). i don't believe they started broadcasting nfl games until the late 80's and mlb games until even later.
cfl games are actually relatively normal compared to a lot of the stuff they aired in the early days.

So true. ESPN's mission from day 1 has always been to show all sports, no matter how obscure, but at the end of the day the sports they show during non-peak times (e.g. summertime) when they can't get prime advertising dollars is whatever is cheap.

Well all the stuff on Cheap Seats was stuff that had once aired on ESPN. Pretty odd stuff

I think they paid a fair bit of money to get Monday night football so that would explain why they are watching their budget. In Australia channel 7 has the rights to the olympics and as a result the rest of their sports presentation is pathetic. Australian Open tennis, Melbourne Cup horse racing (though it is biggest race of the year) and Union test matches is all they have in the way of sport.

ESPN has no money worries. They could pay huge money to play the big sports 24 hours a day, Monday Night Football has nothing to do with this. For that matter, ABC is ESPN. It's the same parent company. ABC college football broadcasts even say "ESPN" on the score graphic. Disney basically transferred the rights from one to the other.
But it's partially the budget money, which is a smart decision even when you COULD spend it, and partially history. ESPN always shows some oddities, and now matter how stupid they seem, sometimes it's hard to stop watching them.

ESPN is owned by disney. something tells me they're not strapped for cash.

if you notice, most of the time they're airing shit like this it's either late at night, or when there's a major sporting event on some other channel that they know they can't really compete with.
