View Full Version : The Computer Magic Lounge (Gaming Nerd Chit-Chat)

I thought it'd be fun to create a Lounge for the gaming forum for the fact that it's a pain sometimes to search for that specific system's or game's thread when it may have fallen off onto another page (or if you're lazy like me and don't want to look for it) and all you've got is a simple question to ask or something of the like. If you've got something picking your brain and need to ask or want to discuss or review a random game, this is the place to be. Random questions and discussion (or plain ol' gaming chit chat) is what I'm getting at here, much like Misc.'s Lounge. I'll get the ball rolling.
I was cleaning out my closet earlier (as I mentioned in the Misc. Lounge) and came across my Game Gear. Only have two titles for it: Sonic the Hedgehog and Joe Montana Football. I wish I had played it more when I first got it, but you know, only two games. Can't play it forever with only two games :/ It's a great find, however, and it makes me want to throw some batteries into it and start playing, just because it's out, heh.
The bigger find, however, was my PS1 in a carrying case with several games I was looking for. I pulled that sucker out and played Twisted Metal 2 for hours. I totally forgot the controls and tricks I knew (which resulted in me dying several times :(), but once I started playing more, the controls came right back to me and I done started blowing shit up and kicking everyone's ass! Fuck you, Darktooth! Love this game like crazy. Also started playing Resident Evil 2 (Claire's scenario) because I hadn't done so in years, but then I realized it'd be awhile so I turned it off, teehee. Got burned out from playing too much TM2, I guess.
With that in mind, I really need to sell my PS1 since I've got my trusty ol' PS2 to play the games. Don't see the need to have it around anymore, but it sure was fun playing those two games again. I'm all kinds of happy now.
im in a nostalgic gaming mood today. i think i'll dust off either my sega mega drive or my N64.. I had 60+ games on my mega drive, fuck i loved that thing.

Good thread idea. Since I don't have any consoles at the moment, only my DS, I think I may pick up a retro console because I'm not fussed with new gaming, it's all too expensive. If I can get some money together in between boosting my Scrubs and Metallica collections, I'll probably look at a megadrive because I'm most familiar with them. If not, I'll buy the Sonic Mega Collection for my PC, but I think I could just as easily get Sonic 1-3 and Knuckles and Ristar, because that's all that's important from the collection. I used to have a load of good games before, Sonic collection, Street Fighter II, Streets Of Rage trilogy, Golden Axe trilogy. Maybe I'll get one around christmas time.

Hehe, Sonic and Shinobi for me. Everyone had Sonic + another random game, it was like a rule. What was scary is that everyone I knew ONLY had Sonic + another game...
And the PS1, ahhhh. I wanted to sell mine until I remember that I had that shit modded to play burned and imported games. And since I never updated the mod way back when, regular new games wouldn't work after a certain date. Sucked. I had to buy all my burned games all over again for the PS2. I remember having Bust-a-Move 4, Dino Crisis, SW EP I: TPM, and the two Clock Tower games burned (among others)...and having to hunt them down. Yes, I actually bothered to buy SW EP I again, however crappy it is. I had fun making fun of the game with my friend and since SW: Shadows of the Empire didn't have lightsabers to use, EP I was like the neatest thing ever for me at the time.

I remeber the old skool master systems with built in "alex kidd"....and if your master system got fucked to the point where it wouldn't play games it was the most frustrating thing sticking a cartridge in and seeing that pricks face on screen

Cool thread idea.
I've got a shitload of PS1 games that I never play. I should though, there are some real gems in there.
I was looking through some of my video game stuff to sell at a yardsale yesterday. Found an extra PS1 controller, an extra PS2 controller, a shitty third party Xbox controller, Project Gotham Racing for Xbox, and a few Gameboy Advance games I don't want. I may sell my PS1 since I've got the PS2 and my original Xbox. Hopefully I'll make a bit of money.

Ah, Alex Kidd...I had Enchanted Castle, what a fun game. Possibly began my fear of scorpions right there. Jan Ken Po games in it pissed me off so much. I remember getting pretty far in the game but have never been able to finish it. And some of those stupid treasure chests were so hard to get to, sigh.
i never finished alex kidd either. the furthest level i can recall is one where there was suspension bridges over waterfalls (and i havent played the game in at least ten years, so i may be wrong)
I was in target today and noticed that they've finally started to heavily discount gamecube games. Resident Evil 4 finally cut from its obscene price o $104.99 to $44.99

Jan Ken Po games in it pissed me off so much.
i'm with you on that fella, my vague memories of it on the mega drive (i can't recall how i came to own it-possibly on a mega games collection) were that of anger when losing a game of chance- to a fucking monkey!
but y'know the worst bit about that mini-game? it was the music and the sounds it made when you lost...all high pitched and designed for the purpose of pissing you off  ....just chatting to my mate about it on msn and we agree- "the gambling monkey was worthy of a sharpshooter" 8-)
anyone ever have any really embaressing moments on old video games that have stuck you for months and its been the simplest way out of it? e.g. on sonic spinball on the last level you had to do the "flipper-hold" move on some parts in order for it to raise you further up into the level.....i spent months on that shit! and on the original simpsons on the nes (bart vs the space mutants...i think it was nes...possibly megadrive) there was the krusty level where you had to jump all over the ferris wheel thing to the other side....and then walk off the screen. i'd sit there for hours being like "it leads nowhere!" figured that out and felt like a supreme dick

One that strikes me immedeatly is (on not so much an old game) on Crash Bandicoot 3. I spent hours trying to beat N.Gen when you're in the ship shooting fruit at him. I finally managed it, but it really pissed me off. Then my friend came up to that point on his save and held the button down and did it easily. I realised that all that time I didn't think you could hold it for auto fire and I had just been frantically tapping it. :ashamed:
And before anyone else says it: YOU CAN JUST WALK OVER IT!?

Hehe, just for the hell of it, I wanted to play Twisted Metal 2 with God mode, mega guns and infinite weapons on. I looked up the codes online and then tried them out several times with no such luck. Frustrated, I checked several sites that had 'em, and it turns out each one had slight errors in the patterns you enter. I wrote 'em all down and then eliminated each one until I entered the codes correctly and started blowing everything up with unlimited remote bombs  Oh yeah, and you gotta be super fast in entering them or else they won't work!
Good times, indeed.

I can't ever recall using homing napalms. I'm not one to use codes or cheats, anyway. I was just messing around and being a sadistic retard by blowing everything up in sight and not getting hurt for it with remote bombs and Shadow's demonic shadow attack. Love seeing Axel go flying overhead, heh.

What didn't you like about it?
Actually, I kinda get where you're coming from with not caring about games most people like. For instance, I can't stand Resident Evil 4 in comparison to the previous Resident Evil games, which IMO were simply so much better.
Adamm R)))
08-20-2006, 02:17 AM
^I agree with the original trilogy being much better, but why can't you stand 4? Sure, it lacks all the tension and claustrophobia and all that made RE great, but it's still a bloody entertaining game in it's own right.

I can't stand Resident Evil 4 in comparison to the previous Resident Evil games
I probably shouldn't have used such strong words. Anyway, it's not that it's a bad game, it's just that I'd take any previous RE game over RE4. The feeling just wasn't there in RE4. The haunted mansion/urban zombie flick theme was completely missing, to be replaced by a comparatively subpar dark village witchhunt type of feel. It just didn't seem like a Resident Evil game anymore.
RE2>RE (remake)>RE3>RE0>RE4.
I don't give a crap about those first person ones, or Code Veronica.

^Damn I love that level.
Adamm R)))
08-20-2006, 03:04 AM
No problem, but what's wrong with Code Veronica? IMO it's the only truly good game that isn't in the numbered series. It's a little slow and quite hard, but no doubt it's good. Still, I say:
RE3>RE>RE2>RE4>RE:CV
Never played RE0 or REmake (although REmake disappointly lacks the opening cut scene from what I've seen).

Worth checking out then. It's not one of those crappy spin-offs, it's a genuine story game. That's why it got ported onto GC and Survivor and all of those shit ones didn't. Takes more patience though, first encounter: 4 zombies surrounding you and you're armed with just a knife. :-O

Played MMX 4 last week. Not quite as good as the first few, but pretty enjoyable nonetheless. Neat bosses(Jet Stingray and Split Mushroom particularly), cool soundtrack, intruiging anime(I didn't particularly care for it, but still intruiging) and Zero finally getting a seperate story made this game a fun experience. Shame the last few have been abysmal.

I'm gonna re-buy a PS2 pretty soon when it gets to the two digets (hopefully soon). The reason for this is because a year after I sold it (which I still don't regret considering what I got in return) they finally got some more killer games. Shadow Of Colossus I really want to check out, MS3 looked killer, and of course...God Of War.
Edit: Also, I couldn't get into Metroid Prime either. Don't really know why. I loved the level design, yet hated back tracking oddly enough.

My Gargoyles Quest II arrived in the mail...huzzah. I never got around to playing this when I was a kid, but I always wanted to. Got it pretty cheap, considering it's not easy to come by these days. I was going through some boxes in the backyard (stored in the '55 Chevy aka the shed) earlier when I found my Atari 7800 with controllers. Couldn't remember where I had put it, but it somehow managed to find its way out there. When I stored it, it was somewhat buggy, but still working as I recall. Not anymore :(
Me, being the crazy sentimental packrat that I am, had a hard time figuring out what to do with it. It was an ultimately hard decision to make, but I tossed it out :\ It smelled of cat piss and had dirt all over it, so it was a lost cause to keep it (even though I was considering it due to, you know, guilt of some sort). I don't even know where most of the games are anymore. Oh well. All good things must come to an end.

Is that from Resident Evil 3? I love that game, not as good as Resident Evil 2 though. I love the urban settings in RE games, they're unbeatable, but RE3 just wasn't as fun overall as RE2.
I've been playing through RE4 some more. It's not as bad as I once said it was, but it's not anywhere near the best RE game. The camera still annoys me, and it doesn't feel anywhere near cheesy enough. There isn't enough backstory to the game, and it's nowhere near as freaky as past RE games. It's better than RE0 though.
Adamm R)))
09-29-2006, 09:33 AM
Yes, it is from RE3. I thought I'd point it out, because that was the day's date (yet I have no intention of quoting the "October 1st, night" line on Sunday. Well, if anything, this date being notable is sort of a meta-reference, me and a group of friends had an RE3 obsession when we were 12 and that was one of our most quotable lines. We even founded our own fan club, Barry was taken, so I had to be Carlos. :(
Also, I prefer RE3 (and possibly even RE1) to RE2. RE2 was just too repetitive for me, with it's 4 scenarios, that were all quite similar. Still, it's a brilliant game and better than 4. RE3 is my all-time favourite game, if I get a Wii, I'll definately be picking up the Cube version of it (and probably all the Cube RE games).

I will definately be starting up some new characters when the expansion hits... as well as leveling my main to 70. But I'm gonna stick to the same server so I can give money to my new alt and help him level :) And when the expansion comes out... I'm gonna tear up the new PvP system I can't wait.
Currently playing on Maelstrom, RP-PVP server.

pretty far for a new server, i believe we're the first horde guild to down ragnaros. though BC may change my guild's make up..

Woo, I've been on an older game buying spree. After much discussion with kupo over the music and watching speed runs on YouTube (with long cutscenes included when it's supposed to be a damn speed run :\), I eBay'd Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil after looking for it at two Game Stops, a Game Crazy and a local bookstore (that also has a good stock of games) but came up short at each one. The bookstore, however, did have Klonoa: Door To Phantomile for $10...but I didn't buy it (!)
Well, I went back to nab it today since I realized what a dumbfuck I was...but it was sold yesterday afternoon according to the guy behind the counter (sorry, kupo) :(
...At least I managed to score Little Nemo: The Dream Master and Snake, Rattle n' Roll for $5 each

You have this snake and a "3D" tilted plane. You eat the enemies and these little ball things with your tongue to grow bigger and get a longer tongue, and the snake body is made of the little balls. And from what I remember, you just gotta get from one end of the level to the exit door, which I think is almost always at the top right area of the level? Not sure. If no the top right then definitely just plain UP somewhere, heh. Oh yeah, and you have to eat enough of the balls to be heavy enough to ring the bell at the end to open the door.

Did it to get out of the house, but I'm also on the search for an N64 because I want to play several games I never got the chance to before. I almost came across one tonight. From far away it looked to be in good shape, but closer inspection revealed a rough piece of shit console. Dusty, scratched up, loose screws, the reset button got stuck...it just wasn't meant to be :(
Depressed, I went over to a tent that caters to DVDs and games. My spirits instantly went up when I bought this for $10 nearly brand new :bang:

For being nine years old, the game is like brand new. The disc is scratchless, and the jewel case, manual and CD insert are spotless. Score.
Speaking of the manual, it's rather unusual as it's got a plastic cover with diamonds etched into it which gives it a hologram-like appearance in the right light. I've never seen any PS1 game cover like it before, but I likes it. Neat.

i didn't know where else to say this, but...
anyone ever play the lion king game for the snes/megadrive(genesis)? the game is a pretty solid platformer until the end, where you have to fight scar in the most tedius gaming experience possible. if anyone else has played it we can discuss how incredibly boring it is.
i got up to it last night and was so bored to death i ended up resetting it and playing the megadrive version of california games instead.

the problem is that after you become adult simba, the fighting becomes really repetitive and takes so long, the first half of the game is definitely more fun, it's as good as any other disney platformer from the time period so at the very least it looks great.

Never owned an N64 the first time around. Never saw the need to since two of my cousins had one and I was always over at their houses playing. I had my PS1 to keep me company during this time, anyway. Last time I regularly played N64 was probably six years ago.
But you see, my cousins are also lame and spoiled. They tend to get bored with stuff real quick and the N64 was no exception. For dudes that say they didn't want it anymore, you'd think they'd give me their's. No dice. Assholes.
But here I am now owning one and pWnInG them, haha.

Hehe, it's probably where you live. The magical bookstore that I love so much (same one I got the N64 at) practically has 'em by the hundreds for an average price of $5 each. Only reason I don't buy them is because most of them are cartridge only. I want the box and manual, too. Or at the very least, the box (don't like bare cartridges in storage).
But yeah, I tend to see a huge selection of Genesis games at most places that deal in vintage video games around here.

Now I'm gonna clear some time to finish up Shadow of the Colossus as I had left off defeating the thirteenth colossus (my favorite battle by far). Just three more to go!

Gamingforce Forums is holding a chiptunes music contest, and out of 256 possible songs, everyone nominates 10. 6 of my choices are definitely in the contest, 1 is on-the-bubble and will be in prelims. Since we were only allowed 2 per series, I tried to go with some that wouldn't be completely obvious...
The 3 that didn't make it are:
GB - Pokémon Red & Blue - Viridian Forest (Junichi Masuda)
NES - Quattro Adventure: Super Robin Hood - Stage 1
NES - Friday the 13th - Cabin
The 1 song on-the-bubbleand its seed is:
266 | NES - Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Trouble - Half Pipe (Rob Hubbard)
And the songs that made it plus their seeds are:
010 | NES - Little Nemo: The Dream Master - Mushroom Forest (Junko Tamiya)
049 | GEN - Valis III - Fourth Trap (Michiko Naruke, Minoru Yuasa, Takaharu Umezu)
084 | GEN - Revenge of Shinobi - China Town (Yuzo Koshiro)

208 | GEN - Valis III - Requiem (Michiko Naruke, Minoru Yuasa, Takaharu Umezu)

In a weird twist of fate, I walked into Kohls today and found the whole package for 70% off, which came to about $37 ironically. The game is hugely fun, but I'm not very good at it yet.

Hell yes I found Silent Hill in computer exchange for Ł2 today, Now I'm probably just going to have to wait a couple of weeks for my brother to remember to bring a PS1 memory card over, since I gave him most of my PS1 stuff since I had pretty much no need for it, but he never uses it.
Fortunatley they also had Shadow of Memories, which is something I kept almost getting for the longest time, but then it seemed to vanish from any 2nd hand stores, so that'll keep me occupied.

Sweet, H_T. I recently came across my original SH disc while cleaning some stuff out. It's disc only because my PS1 and games were stolen at one point, so thinking SH went bye bye with everything else, I went out and bought a brand new copy. Shit, I broke the whammy bar thing on my Guitar Hero controller. I got pissed off at myself for severely fucking up an easy song, and I wasn't paying attention and hit it a little too hard. Took the back off and the tiny plastic piece that's connected to the assembly snapped off, rendering it totally useless. Rest of the controller still works though.

Poor thing served me well for five years +, only to meet its fate on the hard kitchen floor. If you look inside, the left vibrator thingamajig is missing...well that's because it flew out and ripped itself fron the wires, and I was never able to fix it resulting in the right side of the controller feeling awkwardly heavier than the left. Had to play games with vibration off. I managed to get about a month or so out of it after a little ingenuity, but the left analog stick finally kicked the bucket rendering the poor thing useless :(

The death of a PS2 controller
I think my controller is just about toast. Same age as yours was, too. It's been all downhill ever since I flung it at a wall in a blind rage after failing the stupid Hilary race in Vice City one too many times last summer. The rumble makes a horrible loud clicking noise whenever it activates (I always turn it off now in games because of that), there's a crack behind the left handle, the L2 and R2 buttons don't respond too well, and the left analog stick seems to have a life of its own sometimes.
Yeah I think it's time for a new one.

I've never totally broken a controller, but I came pretty close last year. I got pissed at some PS2 game I was playing and jerked the controller back, but I was already pretty far from the TV, so the cord pulled on the connector and snapped off part of the plastic casing. It still works, but I have to be careful with it because all the wires are exposed now.
Magnum

I've hardly ever been able to hold on to a PS2 controller for more than 18 months. No matter what, something always happens.
Half the time it's a complete mystery, it just stops working. The rest of the time, cola and dogs are often involved.
Adamm R)))
06-16-2007, 03:26 AM
I don't think I've ever broken a controller by physically damaging it, even though I've thrown a couple and even bit one once :ashamed:. I couple of PSX/2 controllers have just sorta stopped working and maybe a couple have had wires exposed that I had to be careful with. It's irritating because official controllers are expensive and I usually get cheap ones that break fairly quickly. I had this huge uncomfortable that only cost £3 that a friend got me when he had a small bit of credit left when trading some games in.
Also, this talk of broken controllers reminds me when I "fixed" someone's Megadrive controller that they couldn't get to work properly, by turning off the slow-motion switch. Heh.

When it does happen, I seem to have really crappy luck with analog sticks. Stuff like the spring inside them getting dislodged or the like tends to happen.
