View Full Version : Simpsons References Sighted on the Web

Perhaps because I've been spending more time trolling various bulletin boards around the web or because the popularity of said boards is increasing but it seems that I've been seeing more and more Simpsons references being made in posts on these boards - and it always makes me smile when someone makes a reference and then someone else responds who gets it.

Does anyone know of any sort of list or anything or of any attempt that has been made to catalog these references? It could be fun to see how much of an impact the show really has made on our popular culture - and how much it affects the way we communicate and express ourselves - through Simpsons references!

Here's a link to one of the dozens of posts I've seen with these references:

About 3/4 of the way down, there's a post about Monster Island and a person responds with a comment about how it's just a penninsula.

Heh.
This kind of thing does happen all the time, and not just on the net but in life too. I doubt there is any list anywhere though, and you'd have a tough time compiling one (how would you look for additions?).

If you were to do something like this, which I think would be a really nice idea, I'd suggest additions be done by user submission. People submit references they find to the website, and they get added if correct.

so like a wiki?

I didn't check the link, but at WhitePages.com it gives an example address as "742 Evergreen Terrace"

That is too funny! I develop web sites and often find myself using Simpsons information to populate forms or fill in for test data while developing - never thought of actually putting something out there like that where people can really see it!

This is one of those things that I get excited about and would really enjoy doing - but probably would never get around to finishing it up.

I would think that user submission would be the best way to go - have a simple form that people fill out and post their sighting and then, upon review and approval maybe, it would appear on the site!

Only problem would be how to index it? Would you index the sightings/references By Episode? By Season? ByCharacter? Would be searchable too of course.

I don't think this is a very good idea. There must a thousand different references made everyday on different forums. Any list you make would be horribly incomplete.

If I got 5 cents for every little Simpsons reference I see on the net daily, I'd be incredibly wealthy in little more than half a year.

Its just so engraved in modern culture.

Regularly people say D'oh instead of damn or shit or something

uh, most normal people say damn and shit instead of do'h.

Interesting idea, but it'd probably be ridiculously hard to compile and maintain.

Like Tim said, a wiki would likely be the best way to go.

EDIT: Maybe not the best way, but it certainly would be the easiest.
