View Full Version : My first framegrab

I just started using GIMPshop for windows three days ago. (gimpshop is an opensource clone of photoshop)
So I tried a tutorial from the drunken clam, and made a grabpic today. The only problem was the tutorial said to use a blur before adding the colors, I think I should have blurred it afterwards.

Is it good as a first grabpic? What could I do to improve it?
Thanks

That's not very good at all. First of all, it's called a grabpic. Second, the lines need to be waaaay smoother. The coloring is also off. Your best bet for making grabpics is to keep downloading free trials (or just illegally download) Flash and follow my tutorial on Digital Springfield. Trust me, your grabpics will come out way better if you do it that way.

I can work on the smoother lines and colors, but I don't want to illegally download flash. gimpshop is a lot smaller in size, open source, and applies to all the photoshop tutorials on the net.

A couple things:
1) What you made is called an image, or better yet, a still image; grabpic is another term that could be used, but to outsiders it'll make no sense. Anyways, a framegrab is an actual screenshot of the episode, in normally kinda bad quality, containing the whole scene.
2) The lines are very jagged. See if you can make them a bit thicker and smoother. In addition, right around the lines, there's a little white border. See if you can get rid of that.
Other than those, it's not bad for a first try. I suggest you try the GIMP (http://gimp.org) and use the Path Tool to create them.

I do use the gimp, its just modified to seem like photoshop. And I addressed the little white border, its cause I blurred the lines before filling in the color.

We have a pictures thread in I&S Studios you know. Also, I would recommend flash. I'd be happy to PM you a serial code for flash if you want it.

Except for the jagged lines. It's pretty good. The coloring could need some work, though.

Oh, okay. I should really create a tutorial for making images in the GIMP. I'm betting you could make much use of it.

That's bad. Do what everyone else says and get flash. Who cares if GIMP is smaller, if you're serious about making grabs download Flash now

Scott says that GIMP is similar to Paint Shop Pro, coz I made a video tutorial on how to draw in Paint Shop Pro 7 the other day.
------------
The file size is 100MB so you'd better have a damn good connection!
Its in .gz format so you'll need 7zip to decompress it, go to http://7zip.org to download. (WinRar also works)

The GIMP is actually pretty powerful, and it is free. If you downloaded Flash, you'd technically be stealing from Adobe, which is illegal.

Dave is right.
To make grabpics, you need any image editor which has
- curved line drawing, with antialias
- layer capabilities
And that's it, I think. Try looking at other tutorials and learn WHAT you need to do (eg draw lines on a layer), rather than HOW to do it in a particular program. Then find how to do those things in GIMP.

No, I meant downloading the trial from Adobe, if he likes it, pay for it like I did. If he doesn't, go back to using GIMP

Brad, perhaps, but it's sort of educational and definitely web-related (this is clearly website-related content) so I'm okay with it sticking here.
And yeah, that's very poor, Jim Jones, but keep working at it.

Heh, I just tried to do a grabpic since I was in Linux at the time (comes preinstalled). After it crashed linux twice (probably more linux's fault cos its shit), I found that drawing lines is a pain in the arse. You have to click and drag one way, then click further along the line but drag the other way. And that just creates a selection which you can convert to a line by going though some dialog box. :( So it's not that great actually, but I'm sure you can get good results with some effort.

Menthol, if it was directed at me, your comment, then yes I have tried it, and I had the same problems as Scott. Why do you think I never use it?

I actually found it pretty easy. Maybe I'll write a tutorial later.

Yeah I improved a lot, so I'm gonna post them as I get better in the pictures thread until they are good enough to put on my website.
