View Full Version : Favourite Music In A Videogame

An oft-overlooked part of videogames but one which can add immeasurably to the experience, what are your favourite scores/themes/songs?

For me, the Zelda theme is just amazing. It sounds so epic and sweeping and is instantly recognisible and very hummable. Love it, along with pretty much all the music from Ocarina Of Time, particularly Hyrule Field, which will be engrained in my head forever, and Gerudo Valley.

I was also really impressed with the score for Resident Evil 4. It really sent me into a state of panic when I heard an enemy shout and then THAT music kicked in.

I thought the soundtrack to Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil was excellent, and I've always loved Michael Land's scores for the Monkey Island games.

Ever since I was a kid I've always loved the stage themes from Mega Man 2. They were very primitive and techno, but they were quite catchy as well (Crash Man and Flash Man especially).

I'd also agree on the theme for Zelda, and I've always enjoyed the various Final Fantasy orchestrations (FFVI probably had my favorites, from Kefka's sniveling tune, to Locke and Rachel's dueling themes, to the opera scene).

Hell yes, Klonoa 2 love!

There's literally just waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many game music tracks that I love to death. I say it often but probably 95% of my library is game music...

I'm adding more and more new tracks from random games since Gamingforce is having a VGM contest now (skeetskeetskeetlebrau knows what's up 8-)). Started out with these (http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/4071/gffvgm7ec.gif), but got rid of some that didn't quite sound as good after several listens and added new ones (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/4475/gffvgm2gh1.gif) from later in the contest. Love them all *drool* I've learned that Ys games have some damn great muzak. Overall I've really fallen in love with "Crystal Oasis" from Guild Wars, "Blue Resort" from Bomberman 64, "Legendary Theme" from Gitarooman, and "Penelo's Theme" from Final Fantasy XII.

I always thought Mischief Makers had a great soundtrack. It has a certain style and sound to it that is really catchy and memorable to me. And of course DKC music is very catchy and extremely memorable/recognizable, especialy the music from the second game. The music from the Big Snowman course in Snowboard Kids is one of my all time favorite pieces of music. It's not particularly sad music but I always felt sad (in a good way...) when I heard it because it was so good but the course was only a mere 2 laps. It was almost the same feeling I had with Rainbow Road from MK64 except that I felt that way cause everyone I knew hated that track for its length.

That end of the world tune from Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is one of the best tracks I've heard in a game. It's just ambient resonance but damn does it set up the imminent doom of the town. Song of the Windfish from Link's Awakening is another classic.

Silent Hill obviously. FFVII had so many great pieces, the main Sephiroth theme, and the tune with opera singers for the final battle obviously. Some other beautiful pieces, and the cool turks music of course.

FF7 or FF8

definetley with ff7 having one of the most complete musical scores- ending with "one winged angel" for the seph fight....beautiful. i reckion 9 and 10 have some pretty sweet tunes in there, thought 10s stood out (particularly towards the end) with it really fitting the mood...brought a tear to my eye :*)

i'll agree with v-rock aswell, perfectly fits the 80s hard-rock theme :D was disappointed with SA's alternative line-up (radio-x), few nice tracks in there but it just didn't flow. plus you switch to certain stations for "getaway" music....sadly rod stewarts "young turks" always became the theme of my spectacular driving sprees....disappointing :(

There are just so many awesome songs from that contest. It's exposed me to games I've never heard of before and am now interested in seeking out and playing, just because the music is fantastic. I'm always seeking out new stuff, and this was the way to go.

All in all, looove most of them (sans the heavy metal/industrial/distorted sounding songs...not my thing). So hard to pick some off the top of my head since I adore them all, but the ones that stick out in my mind are "Crystal Oasis" from Guild Wars, "Legendary Theme" from Gitarooman (hey, what do you know...kuppy and I like two of the same songs), "Morning Journey" from Wild Arms, "Enigmatic Scheme" from Unlimited SaGa, "Tidal Tempest - Good Fortune" from Sonic CD, and "Funky Dealer" from Jet Set Radio Future (I love the old-school gangster movie sample the last song utilizes while sounding funky in the process. "Get your bets down, ladies and gentlemen", heh).

I've also come to realize that the Final Fantasy games have some beautifully arranged music. I dig that stuff, too. Also, Silent Hill's music since I mentioned it in the SH thread.

There's also a countless amount of classic games that have great music, too, but my list would be veeery lengthy :-X

In short, I like entirely way too much stuff...

Its not quite so overlooked. I used to hang around www.ocremix.org quite often.

I love all music and there's some great stuff in video games. Even the earliest games had some ingenius tunes that were fantastic for how easy to remember they were. Thats why the Zelda theme, Final Fantasy's Prelude etc are all eternal classics now.

I seriously have so many favorites I can't possibly post them all here. Going by whole soundtracks (or quasi soundtracks) I hold these in particular regard.

-Chrono Cross: I have a lot to say about the game, but there's not much to say about the music. Its absolutely gorgeous. Few soundtracks in a game have gotten across the atmosphere the game is going for quite like Chrono Cross has.
-ALL the Silent Hill Soundtracks: Akira Yamaoka is a genius...and I think a little demented too. I love ambient music, but the atmosphere he sets with these tunes is just insane. I particularly like 2 and 4's.
-Xenogears: I will always love this game, and its music was especially nice. I have the rearrange album, Creid as well.
-Einhander: Even outside of the game, its one of the best techno arranges I can think of. And I usually hate techno. It mixes ambience and techno in a fantastic way.
-The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: Whatever you think of the game, this has my favorite music of the Zelda series so far.
-Super Smash Brothers (and melee): Remixes are awsome, so this was a dream But even its original music is catchy.
-Final Fantasy VI, VII, IX, and Tactics: Not much to say, they're gorgeous. Dirge of Cereberus and XI have some really nice arrangements too.
-Super Robot Wars series: I don't think many of you will get the distinct draw of this series since its so niche. But me being a huge fan of mecha anime of all sorts makes all of it great, from the rearranges to the original music.
-Seiken Densetsu 2: After all this time, this games' music is still gorgeous.
-Guilty Gear XX-Slash and version 1.2. Its hard rock in a crazy anime themed fighting game, and its all catchy.
-Metal Gear Solid 1-3: I have a weak spot for some of the music from this series.
-Saga Frontier II: This is a great hidden gem in game music. The piano arranges are just gorgeous. Even alone it envokes real emotion I think, and if you play the game for its incredible story its just really something.
-Street Fighter III: Third Strike: Its unusual use of ambience and hip hop, but I liked it a lot.
-Simpsons Hit and Run: Don't laugh! I think some of the music in this game was fantastic. It went with the feel and theme of the show perfectly while not being too predictable. The tune when "fighting" you know who (x 2) in the end is a really cool use of the main theme and tense orchestra. Each characters individual level themes in bits and pieces were all a really nice touch too. Really got you into the feel of each one. It surprised me quite a bit.

I seriously can't list them all, but I think you get the point. :silly:

A rehash? Its supposed to have the main theme strewed in there, its a direct sequel. Even if there's some tracks that have similarities its intentional, its hardly a rehash at all.

I can mention it because while I like both, I like Cross's OST better. :D I think its beautifully atmospheric.

Trigger was great for its time, and it still stands the test of time. They're both different musical styles though and I like Cross's slightly better by personal preference.

1. Actraiser - SNES
2. Super Adventure Island - SNES
3. Streets of Rage 1 & 2 - Genesis
4. Ridge Racer Revolution - PSone

One to three were composed by the 90's game music superstar Yuzo Koshiro and RRR was pretty funky for its day.

Yes Virt, well known for his infinitely long remixes. :D

Just between you and me, I think for a while he made a lot of these extremely long remixes just for the sake of outdoing other remixers...

But even so a lot of his stuff is pretty nice. He mostly hung around vgmix.com though, and that place is sort of suffering downtime last I heard. Its an eternally troubled site. I liked it a lot though, I'll have to check on its progress later...its been a while since I followed this stuff.

I just can't believe that the music from my beloved Banjo-Kazooie hasn't been mentioned yet. Heathens! Gruntu's Lair, Mumbos Mountain, Treasure Trove Cove, Clankers Cavern, Bubblegloop Swamp, Freezezy Peak, Gobi's Valley, Mad Monster Mansion, Rusty Bucket Bay, Click Clock Wood, Grunty's Furnace Fun and the Final Battle all had superb music. That's every level except for Spiral Mountain I believe, but that music kinda sucked. I suppose that the long list is a testament to the greatness of Grant Kirkhope.

Speaking of him, most of the music from DK64 (Creepy Castle in particular for me) and Banjo-Tooie was rather awesome too. The main menu in Perfect Dark had an awesome melody and the main menu music from Goldeneye reeked of awesomeness. Mario 64 had some great tunes, and Resident Evil games always have great save room music that makes you feel right at home (and downright scared when you're in a save room with no music).

Metroid Prime featured some great orchestral sounds, I'm thinking Magmoor Caverns here folks.

I noticed that the music from Big Snowman was mentioned last page. That level was one nice level for sure. Short (ish) and fun.

kupomog
08-07-2006, 04:09 PM
Yup yup, I loves the Big Snowman. I loop it for hours. The other tracks are nice (Grass Valley is fairly bouncy and Asian-y) but Snowman is my ultimate favorite.

And Magmoor Caverns is good stuff. Great arrangement on Norfair Ancient Ruins, still kind of has an SNES-y feel to it, lotsa bassy drums which I like. Perfect for hopping around lava caves. Both Phendrana tracks and both Tallon tracks are great, too, but I especially like the first Tallon Overworld because it sounds very atmospheric with the falling rain and vegetation. It's the same feeling I get when listening to Torvus Bog from MP2. And only until I got the MP OST did I realize that the battle music with Flaaghra was actually more diverse than just drums and some synth sounds. In the NA versions, the battle music doesn't loop correctly, so we only hear the first 35 seconds over and over...although it sounds pretty cool that way. And the Chozo Ruins music is different than the version in teh game...it sounds nicer but it's also music a sinewave piece that I loved in the game version which sucks. Oh. And. MP2...Dark Samus battle...hawt.

I love Goldeneye's music, too. That's an interesting game in which I love every single piece of music from each level. In a lot of OSTs, there are stand out tracks with some duds littered between, but it's not like that for Goldeneye to me. Even the pseudo-hardrawk Silo music is very catchy.

And probably no one ever played it, but the .hack series for PS2, while lacking in gaemplay, had great music. The Desktop music, the forest field music, the Phase boss battles with Sketih and Maha...lots of nice tracks for a fairly mediocre game.

http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/3/3f/200px-Blaster_Master_box.jpg

Sounds clean and fun, especially the electro-drums which sound almost real at points...much like a real band is playing the music. Surprised at how well Nintendo music evolved by 1988. Each level has it's own unique song, and I don't think there's one I don't like. Even the fast action death metal-sounding (:-o) "Area 7 - Final Mutant Boss" is tits.

Now I've got the soundtrack playing

SNES mario...definitely the best I've heard. Of course that youtube Azn kid video increased my appreciate for it tenfold. Love the treetops theme especially, but all of it's great.

All of the non-warp songs for Ocarina of Time...some of the warp songs I actually found myself thinking "why didn't they do this little things differently" for a couple of them.

The music for Metroid contributed a big part to the stark mood of the game.

Zelda 2 town music.

Moonwalker seriously had some awesome GYM Jackson tunes. Actually, I'm pretty sure that I had heard the stuff in the game before I had actually heard any of his songs. I mean I knew he was a real guy, I had just never been exposed to his music/videos until after I played the game. It was interesting when I did. I know that the caverns music was Billie Jean. I finished the game a grand total of one time, but I can't remember what's after the caverns. I just know that the final battle with the robot Jackson was cool.

My mom is trying to preserve our copy of Moonwalker along with our copy Side Pocket for NES and Tengen's version of Tetris. She will kill me if I lose any of them, basically. Speaking of Tengen's Tetris...great music :lick:

Talking about the Genesis version, of course, but I also downloaded the OST from Galbadia (Turbo CD version) for comparison. It good, too, but I prefer the Genesis version, myself. Yup, Dirge of Cerberus has some great music in it, along with FF X, FF X-2, SH: From the New World and the Metroid Prime series.

Hey everyone...

I'm not much into playing video games, but I do like the music! (that is, when I come across songs I hear when others are playing video games!)

I've heard some good music from the games Shenmue, Metropolis Street Racer and in a skateboarding game which I can't remember the name of...also, can't forget music from classics like Mario Bros and Tetris.

Has anyone heard of OverClocked Remix (http://www.ocremix.org/)?? It's an "unofficial game music arrangment community" where people post their own versions of video game music. It's an awesome site with awesome remixed video game music, which you can also download!

Rock On!

Having just played through them all, I agree with Nebuchanezzar. Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, DK64 and Perfect Dark have brilliant music. Although Grant Kirkhope must love the xylophone - it's in every Banjo tune.

Oh, and Perfect Dark has one of the best credits themes I have ever heard. (It's also the theme to The Duel, if anyone hasn't finished it.)

Good to know that more and more people convert to bizarre Rareware worshipping everyday. Pity they haven't kept up the quality :(

I haven't played any of the new Metroid games apart from MP1, but I recently played through it again and my view has somewhat changed. It's not that the music isn't great anymore, it's that not enough credit is given to the other levels besides Magmoor Caverns. Play through Phendrana Drifts, and every single area has fantastic music. The Edge area is brilliant, the main area has superb music, and the pirate areas music is perfectly suited. Same goes with the Phazon Mines and best of all - Talon Overworld. I love that game.

Heh, not enough credit is given? Tallon Overworld 2 (I like the first one more...the one with the Brinstar bit), Phendrana 1, and the Vs. Space Pirates/Thardus themes are almost always given tons more props over Magmoor in my experience. Sometimes even Chozo Ruins. That's not to say people don't love Magmoor, it's a great remix of a classic, but I've never really come across a group of people that think Magmoor is better than the rest of the soundtrack.

Ugh, I was never a fan of Chozo Ruins in any respect. You just spend too much time there, and the music becomes annoying enough to remind you of such an annoying place. I guess I must talk to the wrong Metroid fans then.

Chozo Ruins is not too bad, I like the beat. Less obnoxious than the Vs. Giant Beetle music to me. I kow a lot of people who love the Vs. Chozo Ghost music but I find it cacophonous and annoying. Plus I just plain can't stand those stupid ghosts. I'm still pissed that the OST version of Chozo Ruins is different than in game but eh, I've got the streamed music file converted from off the disc so I'm happy.

Shenmue's intro theme remains my favorite piece of gaming-specific music ever. It's a beautiful song in its own right, but it makes Shenmue seem a lot more majestic due to it being included, and being used in the right places.

I had an interesting idea the other day during work, instead of businesses using crappy elevator music when they put you on hold, they should use tunes from classic video games

My fave music is videogames is the Carmageddon music, that rules! I can listen to that on it's own in my CD player! I also love the music in Super Monkey Ball, Japanese techno of some sort I guess...

Anyone who grew up in the 80's would probably enjoy GTA: Vice City. The GTA games, or any games that use real artists in their soundtrack, don't count. It has to be stuff that is original to the game.

That said, to this day I still whistle the songs from Banjo-Kazooie, and they still get stuck in my head. Catchiest soundtrack ever.

Maybe I've already mentioned them, maybe not, but the whistling type songs from Mario 64 (Cool Cool Mountain, Tick Tock Clock, the cap levels) are awesome.

Woo more Mischief Makers love <3

And thanks to skittlin'brau's knowledge, I now realize that the reason I love most of the game music I love is because of the use of the totally awesome panflute :nerdb:

I especially like the song in the "who turned out the Lights episode", I wish I knew how to play it on piano

You know what's awesome? If you have the EWJ CD-ROM version, you can play it in your CD player. Woohoo!

I 'specially love the themes for "Andy Asteroids", "What The Heck", "New Junk City", "Down The Tubes", "Level Five", and that song that plays when you fight the second stage of the robot chicken, and when you do the first part of "Buttville", where you helicoptor-head your way through the spikes.

I have dissed Halo and Halo 2 quite a bit in the past, but I realized that they have some really great music in them. It goes above and beyond simply being just ambience music (in most cases) and always comes in at the perfect time to really set the mood. Half-Life 2 and other first person shooters today do this, but, like in Half-Life 2's case, its always either an adrenaline-pumping techno song or "musical background noise."

In my opinion its one of the few things that actually makes Halo stand out as more than just another FPS.

retro - Mega Man 2. Wily's fortress theme just plain rocks.

modern - Killer7 and Katamari Damacy.

There are so many good MM2 songs, especially the Flashman, Airman, Crashman and Bubbleman levels

And EWJ rocks. And will always rock. I'm still praying for an EWJ 4 on the Wii. (Or at least EWJ 1 & 2 on the Virtual Console). Same with ToeJam and Earl.

And I've recently discovered that the soundtrack for the US version of Sonic CD also rocks.

Yeah, TJ&E was great.

If we get an EWJ 4, R* had better keep their hands away from it - as much as I love R*, EWJ3 was terrible. And I'm pretty sure Shiny can't make it, since I remember reading something about them actually working on a PSP sequel/remake, but having the project cancelled when they got bought out by some French computer company I've never heard of.

Always going to be Legend of Zelda, any of the games has that recognizable tune that conjures up the nostalgic memories of a happier time when the only true worry in life was worrying about that boss you just couldn't beat.

I know SH has been mentioned, but I'd like to put in a specific vote for the tune that plays when Lisa dies in SH1 (hope I didn't give anything away there, but if I did....who cares, you should have played it by now, it rocks). So very, very sad.

My fave game music of all time has to be from Bubble Bobble. So monotonous, so catchy, so frustrating...what's not to love!
