season starts in almost exactly a month, so it's about time for the new thread. might as well start off with predictions to win each conference:
acc: miami
big east: west virginia
big ten: ohio state
big 12: oklahoma
conf usa: i dunno.. um, memphis?
mac: northern illinois
mountain west: uh, utah? no idea
pac 10: usc
sec: auburn
sunbelt: no clue, don't really care anyway
wac: boise state
national champion: ohio state
heisman winner: adrian peterson, okla (even though i would love to see stanton, it won't happen)
big ten is loaded this year. osu, psu, um, msu, iowa, wisc, minn all have a realistic shot to finish at least second, and an outside shot to win it. it will be fun to watch.
so yeah, bring the season on already

good job kevin.
memphis will not win c-usa, way too many holes to fill. defense will keep them bowling, but i wish they'd contend for c-usa this year. definitely next.

va tech...8 or 9 wins. they will start off hot as usual then break my heart.
auburn...not only sec champ, but my pick to win it all.
south carolina...7-8 wins again. rice will seperate himeself as the best wideout in the country.

south carolina is a vastly improved team. on offense they will actually be consistent...defense which wasnt great, made big plays last season. defense has taken a hit with loss of senior leadership. 7-9 wins is realistic. I say 8. given a couple of more seasons you got a legit top 20 program on a consistent basis.

Bomar kickied off OU (http://www.newsok.com/article/2824545/)
As much as I HATE OU, I hate seeing this. It's no fun to kick someone when they're down. Seems like Stoops had to do this to avoid an NCAA investigation. Man, thanks for totally screwing the program, Bomar. Jeez........

^ I figure the most I can do is wait and see what happens in the first couple of games. We have an easy starting schedule (except Oregon), so maybe we have time to get Paul Thompson or Joey Halzle up to speed. Rumor has it Thompson will be the replacement, and he had outperformed Bomar in practice before the 2005 season started. You know we are feeling the pain at OU though :( . Last year was supposed to be the rebuilding season, not this one.

Sam Keller leaves ASU (http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=72130)
Arizona State needs to get this cleared up by tommorow at the latest. Koetter is an idiot for naming Keller the starting QB and then changing his mind 2 days later publicly. At least tell Keller first, and then find a way to break it to the team later. From our perspective, it seems like he bowed to pressure from the team, which doesn't set a good example. The players may start to think that they can get their way no matter what, which could cause problems.
As far as Keller goes, his best bet is to stay at ASU and ride it out on the bench, try to win back the starting spot and maybe Carpenter gets injured or something. He can't really go to a D-1AA school right now and I don't think he wants to sit out a year. He's still an NFL prospect, so hope for some playing time and impress at the combine, I'd say.

I don't see the problem here. He's the coach, he can start whoever he wants. So he changed his mind, oh well. It doesn't look like he can make a bad choice here, but, from a long-term standpoint, if a sophomore and a senior are about even, it makes for sense to start the sophomore. More experience for the future. I agree with his change. Not exactly the smoothest way to do it, yeah.

Thank you Dirk, and thank you Rudy!
Nebraska picked up a HUGE QB in Sam Keller, for next year after losing both Beck and Freeman. Zac Taylor doesn't have to worry about competition, Keller can learn the offense and they can both teach each other.
If the rumors are indeed true, it will be interesting to see how effective Keller is in the WCO transferring from the gun-slinging vertical attack at ASU. I'm sure Callahan and Co. will work to his strengths.

Mayor Quimby
08-22-2006, 06:36 PM
I'm fairly certain that Callahan will find away to incorporate Keller's attributes next year. Everything I have seen and heard about him has been nothing but positive and that he is a potential NFL QB. What is bothering me is the local media hasn't announced it as a done deal yet.
I have an interesting idea if anyone wants in. Each week we pick who is the winner in each game with a top 25 team in it and the winner at the end of the season gets some sort of prize or we can just play for fun. It wouldn’t be that hare to run and organize and I’m willing to keep track of all of the scores and if there’s a tie or something, I’ll post a question with the closest to the actual number to be used as a tiebreaker. If you guys could give me some feedback on this idea, that would be awesome.

you dont know me very well. I dislike usc and clemson equally. my decision is based on my opinion of having visited both stadiums several times. a usc home game is about 20 times more enjoyable than a clemson home game. historically clemson has been the state power...that said both programs are on an upswing. clemson has more on both sides of the balls than the gamecocks do. my allegiance is to va tech and for some odd reason auburn.
also notre dame quit making me look bad. I have to give the jackets defense some credit. front seven has been fantastic. irish have the lead so they should be able to pull away.
colorado ahhahahahah.
west va looked awesome. psu looked pretty good, weather made it tough to see what they have. pittsburgh beat a bad uva team. waahoos will be lucky to win 4 games.

I expect the vols to be a 7-8 win team. not back to being a team that truly matters just yet. just an opinion. those receivers looked awesome, need to see ainge do it consistently though. also why the hell was cal ranked 9th to begin with? shit baffles me.

no questions on the defense, but just about every team in the sec has a decent defense. hell arkansas was looking strong, just on the field so much due to that shit offense. mcfadden looked pretty good considering his timing has to be off. if ainge can deliver the ball that team can challenge for the sec. if he reverts they still got enough to get 8 wins...plus a bowl.
also "john dabid booty"...who goes with their middle name. his brother should kick his ass.
tenn's back as far as i'm concerned. yeah, it was cal, but the vols looked faster, smarter, and phil has clearly lost some weight. i'm scared and other sec fans should take note as well. phil's looking for revenge .. and food, but mostly revenge.
bama played horrible in the second half. just lazy all around. joe kines is going to be furious. i'd hate to be in that locker room. o-line is MUCH better ... yet for some reason didn't block for darby, yet was flawless when jimmy johns was in. john parker had a good debut as well. he handled the pressure of his first start well .. winning a championship at hoover helps with that i guess.
damnit i thought gt was going to beat notre dame. and that uab would upset oklahoma. and that arkansas wouldn't embarass the sec. the tenn game offset that though.
great day. looking forward to monday night.

that aside, this is still a very intact defense that was ranked nationally in the top five last season. you take that for what it's worth. But what do returning players on a good defense have to do with ranking? Ohio St is returning only 2 and is number one.

it's a huge meh, concerning who won. richmond has played duke, wake, and vandy a lot since 2000 or so (the ivy trio) very hard, and has nearly beaten all three.

Anyone else thinking that ranking Ohio State and Texas #1 and #2 respectively is just a ploy to give Saturday's game more hype? No way Texas deserves to be #2 after beating a North Texas team that doesn't deserve to be part of Div. I-A! More deserving of #2 is USC for beating up on Arkansas almost as bad as they did last year with none of the offensive stars they lost this offseason, plus it was an away game and Arkansas had revenge on their minds.
It's already been said that polls mean nothing at this point in the season so time and games will (hopefully) ensure that teams end up where they should be. But obviously pollsters just wanted to make the game a #1 vs #2 game instead of just being content with having a really good game with national championship implications.
kevin
09-07-2006, 10:42 AM
no, i think it's justified. considering last week's #2, notre dame, struggled a bit, while #3 texas steamrolled (like they should've) over north texas.
Spartan
09-07-2006, 10:58 AM
it wasn't contrived to get hype, but the hype resulting from it is a bit rediculous. once and for all, start the polls three weeks into the season.
a 1v2 game will always get huge hype, and most of the time, it's deserved. this...simply does not.
Rekart
09-07-2006, 02:00 PM
The respective rankings are deserved on the information available, but like Spartan said, start rankings in the 3rd week. Even without rankings, the game would still be getting huge hype because it's Ohio State and Texas, although maybe less. Without rankings, instead of saying "Numbers 1 and 2 in the country," they'd just say "Two of the best teams in the country," it doesn't really matter.

in all honesty I don't want to go. wife's brother did his undergrad & law school at usc. he has 4 season tickets. he had to go out of town to a wedding so we got burdened with them. I know it sounds shitty, but when you know a team is going to kill the other team it makes it less appealing. anyhow good food is to be had. we should be leaving sometime around the middle of the 3rd qrtr. by then it should be well out of reach. then it will be the fun walk back to the car through the ga fans in the parking lot. awesome.

Air Force's onside kick team looked so polished, I'm almost suprised they don't do it for every kickoff. I mean, AF's defense isn't gonna stop anyone, so they might as well take the chance anyway. Haven't seen the stats yet, but they must've had 300+ rushing yards over Tennessee.....whew.

Duke, by far, but Syracuse is down there.
Another great CSU-CU game yesterday, and I'm finally happy after it. It's been awhile. CSU's defense played a shitty first drive, giving up CU's only touchdown of the game, but then made good adjustments. Basically what they do every game. Offense looked good, even if not great. I don't know if I'm happier about CSU's 2-0 start or CU's 0-2 start.

gamecocks...defense gave lots of effort. considering the offense botched so many things. smelly the freshman should be starting from now on. two things he does very well, throws better on the move, and he checks down to his secondary receivers much faster. rice was banged up before the 3rd qrtr was over. he stood out, he burned his man every play. guy is a pro playing college. best part was uga...has its own damn air conditioned bus. lucky ass dog.

I'm actually REALLY enjoying Rutgers games this year. Everyone knows where my heart is in the Big East, but I do like to see Rutgers have a good year. Hopefully they make another bowl this year.if you want, i can see if my girlfriend will swipe her card for a free ticket at the game sometime if you wanna come up some time, because i plan on going in a few weeks.

I like those picks except for the Michigan/Notre Dame one, and possibly the Miami/Louisville one (Louisville will win but not beat the spread). Notre Dame should take care of business against Michigan, then proceed to lose at Michigan State (like always).

glad smyce is happy, that's always a big priority for me. the fucked up thing is, we didn't actually play all that terribly. yeah, our defense was shit in the first half, and we made some huge mistakes on special teams, but our offense didn't look too bad (especially considering the deficit they were working with from the start). and even with all that shit, we still almost covered the spread at the end. basically, you're a retard, smyce, and you got lucky.

I know this will sound like a homer, but I really expect Tennessee to beat Florida this weekend. The main reason is Florida's offensive line, it is fairly week, and Tennessee's D-line is very good. Plus, Harrell is returning for one game before his surgery. He is the leader of the defense, and will provide extra motivation for them. Urban Myer has won only one game on the road in the SEC, and that was against Kentucky. I know Ainge hasn't had much pressure, but I expect him to be better against it this year, and when Florida stacks the box, he should be able to find some wide-open receivers.

Saw the piece on Gameday today. They have 384 different jersey combinations and never wear the same combo twice. Fucking dumb.
What an amazing game. I never thought we would kick the shit out of them like this, but it worked out well for us. Here are some of my thoughts:
Brady Quinn 4 turnovers, 2 for TDs, one almost for a TD. He had pressure in his face the entire game. Only sacked a couple of times, but he was hit and knocked down a ton. He also had a less than 50% completion precentage, I think.
Our front seven may be the best in the nation. Woodley didn't have a great game, but he still brought a fumble back for a TD. Branch is huge at DT. And I can't help but drool at our LBs. Crable had a nice sack and had a bunch of tackles. David Harris is the unsung hero of the defense; leading in tackles and always making the tough tackles. Burgess almost had two pick sixes today. It was ridiculous. Our defense will probably have 2 All-Americans, Woodley and Hall. Hall always has great coverage and had a pick. Trent also looked pretty good today.
Our offense was also good. Henne looked pretty good today. Manningham is amazing, and I want him in the number 1 jersey next year. Hart had 100, even though I didn't think he had that great of a running game.
I can't even pick our MVPs today. Manningham had 3 TDs, Hart had 100 yards, Burgess had 2 INTs and a TD. Woodley had a TD. Ridiculous. We completely owned Notre Dame today, no question about it.
Also, the refs were terrible today. Missed a ton of holding calls, and had a couple of bullshit PI and late hit calls against Michigan. I can think of 4 off of the top of my head. They missed a 15 yard facemask on Hart. Really, really poor reffing.

AU 7, LSU 3.....hell yeah. I've heard all the whining, but I say "whatever, dudes". If the flag was never thrown in the first place (for the PI call), there'd be nowhere near as much bitching, 'cuz it was obviously not gonna be a completed pass anyway. Plus, PI does not automatically equal points.....LSU hadn't put it in the end zone all day, so it's not like the refs stole a gimme TD. And while we're at it, the refs earlier botched an offensive PI call on Auburn, squashing a potential scoring drive.....if they called that one right, discussing how the game ended might've been irrelevant. And finally, if you want to score a TD as time expires, it's probably a good idea to actually throw it in the end zone, but that's just me......
anyway, great game, plus went 7-for-7 on my pool picks, so it was a doubly rewarding Saturday.....

You are fucking retarded.
Firstly, the officials botched not one, but TWO PI calls on LSU. The PI call on Auburn was offensive interference as Taylor pushed off and the defender fell down which led to the completion.
Secondly, did you forget the PI call at the end of the first half? LSU were driving the ball and made a throw to the goal line in which the Auburn defender clearly interfered and there was no call. We had to settle for the field goal. The interference at the end of the second half was made before the ball was tipped. The Auburn player fucking tackled the LSU player and the flag was rightfully thrown. As Lou Holtz said "In 31 years of coaching, I've never seen a call that bad". We would have been in clear FG range and could have elected to kick, hold Auburn and get the ball back. At that point, we had two timeouts remaining. From where we were at the end, we could have kicked another FG and possibly won. You are right, PI doesnt automatically guarantee points. But the game changes if that call is made properly.
The play at the end of the game was made to the only open reciever we had at the time and the Auburn safety made a good break on the ball and excellent tackle. I would have preferred it to go in the endzone as you said, but we had nothing. Auburn defense was playing prevent and had everyone back.
I had remained quiet on the game up until this because I just felt everyone understood we got hosed and there was no need to bring up my opinions. Obviously thats not the case.

look......I'd be pissed if things went the other way, no doubt. But without speculation, here's the facts: LSU had no TDs, never crossed the 20, and their longest running play was the result of a fumble. What's to say a TD was such a sure thing from the 15? If the game was a 42-38 shootout & the same PI call happened, maybe I'd be more compassionate toward the fans who feel they "deserved" a win, since LSU woulda proved they could put the ball in the end zone prior to that. We can argue shitty officiating all day (it IS the SEC, after all), I won't dwell on the no-call delay of game penalties (plural), or the ticky-tack call on Courtney Taylor, or even the LSU player who purposely took a dive in order to stop the clock near the end of the game (funny how that conveniently gets overlooked in discussion)....but at the end of the day, LSU still had a chance for a win & didn't pull it off. Get on Les Miles' ass, if anyone.......
Honestly, I'm convinced no other team in the country would've beaten either LSU or Auburn yesterday, it was that brutal.....but Auburn owes no apologies, they earned it as much as anyone.....
edit: it doesn't help sway my opinion when someone uses Granny Clampett (aka Lou Holtz) to support his/her argument......

09-17-2006, 03:39 PM
Fair enough man. I just didnt think you were giving LSU any credit in your first post. You still failed to grasp my point of kick a FG to make it 7-6. At that point in the game, we still had 2 timeouts, we had stopped Auburn all day, we could have had time left. Kick the FG: 7-6, stop Auburn and drive for a possible game winning FG. We didnt need a TD had we kicked the FG to make it 7-6 which is probably likely had the PI call gone in our favor. WIth the 2 timeouts, we had time to stop Auburn and drive again.
Auburn is a great team. I only used Holtz because, he may be a maroon, but in 31 years, that was the worst call he'd seen...thats saying something.
Samuel L Bronkowitz
09-17-2006, 06:46 PM
I still think if the refs never threw the flag to begin with & made the ruling promptly, alot more folks could've lived with the outcome of the play, 'cuz the fact is the deflection made the ball uncatchable in the first place, rule or no rule. It was a physical game all day, and the average fan woulda shrugged their shoulders at that play & say "ehh, it was uncatchable" and moved on. Ahhh fuck it, this one's never gonna get settled......
SEC officials do suck ass, 'tho. It's a shame that poor officiating has to overshadow what was two classic conference games this weekend(AU/LSU, UF/UT), and I'm sure that slightly demeaned both wins from a voting standpoint......I can already tell that ABC/ESPN are putting the wheels in motion lobbying their precious USC/OSU matchup for the MNC.

Don't forget replay officials in the Pac-10. the Oregon/Oklahoma game was as exciting a game as any on Saturday, but replay blew at least 1 big call (the onside kick) and probably another one. Lots of officiating has sucked this year (more than normal), and it's legit criticism and not just whining about bad calls that only happen to your team.
