Nintendo DS button configuration

So, I finally bought a DS along with the new super mario bros. I also tried some of my game boy SP games on there and found it almost impossible to play them because I couldn't alter the button configuration. Is there a way to alter button configuration for GBA games and I'm just not seeing it?
