These are all videos of some guy playing really bad NES games and reviewing them. It's pretty funny stuff, especially the Turtles one. It was actually the first NES game I played as a kid, and I couldn't get past the fourth level. If you played it, you'll remember all the stuff he brings up, and how annoying it was to get through it.

the turtles review has me in stitches. i used to play that for ages on my commodore 64. game suffered the same flaws as the nes version from the sounds of it.

His profanity laden reviews only make me love these games even more. Sure they were flawed, but they were quite fun back in the day.

Funny, but I liked TMNT. I didn't have that much of a problem with the game, at least until the end. I never could beat the damn thing because by the time I got to Shredder I had no life left to challenge him.

yeah it was a challenge. I think we discussed this in the nes thread at some point. beat it 3 times. if I played it today...not a chance in hell I would beat it.

Something is telling me I actually did finish the game with no cheats. Of course, I also have the Game Genie so maybe that's how I pulled it off. It's been awhile...
I can vouch for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, though. Judge Doom is impossible (yes, impossible. Not nearly impossible, but impossible) to beat without the Game Genie. All the stress you go through just to beat him, and you get a really shitty and quick ending. That game pisses me off so.

07-07-2006, 02:28 PM
my game genie never worked...however I never really used it either.
there was never a game I didnt beat on nes or snes to completion. even if I hated it.
skittlebrau
07-07-2006, 02:39 PM
I've only used my Game Genie twice in order to complete a game. Once for the aforementioned one, and once for http://home.comcast.net/~ericbighead/jasonsmiley.gif, heh.
Otherwise, I'd use it just to mess around with games I'd already won several times over.

that was my thought as well. I could never get mine to load. or it would freeze up the games.

It goes from being very funny and true to extremely lame at a whim. The swearing feels really forced and too many parts sound like he's trying to sound way too angry. Some parts are great...but the needless cursing takes away from the humor.

07-07-2006, 03:44 PM
I could never get past the underwater level in TMNT. Ever. Sigh. <3 Overworld Theme, though. Some of the things that he complained I didn't have problems with, and he did sound like he was trying to force as many stupid swears as he could into it. But otherwise some things (like the pizza and the spiked walls in TMNT or the car in WFRR) made me laugh because I could just imagine how annoyed that would get me.

I beat it once. I remember it took over 10 hours one day. I still have that game, and after watching his review I decided I should try again. I thought it was great, so, don't know what his problem is. Who wants to hear all those really overdone bathroom humor curses? What a bunch of trash. Basically he just sucks at gaming and he's bitter at the world. It was a fun watch though, Thanks!

Also, I found this speed run of WFRR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okinPecOApU) (six minutes!) of which I think is modified. There is no way in hell you can beat Judge Doom that easily. Just no way.

did I say I hated it in the other thread. cant remember. it wasnt my favorite but it did keep me busy for a few hours.
the really weird part about the friday the 13th game was how early you had a shot at "fighting" jason. I remember walking down accross the screen...music changed and bam, there he is. of course its like a 10 second battle and he is gone. this was like 20 minutes into playing. or maybe I have forgotten everything.
skittlebrau
07-08-2006, 07:09 PM
No no, you're right. Jason fights you on the outside perimeter of the camp, too. You know he's gonna fight you because the background freezes and all zombies clear the area. Then BAM!
Hate it when it happens near the beginning and all you have are stones or a knife :(

Oh man this takes me back. :)
Being born in 1981, I palyed the NES all through its day. And yeah that damn TMNT game is IMPOSSIABLE. I mean I was thrilled I could get through the underwater level but after that forget it I didn't have any characters left.
That game was hard as hell. I mean I beat the Castlevania series, Mario, Punch Out, Kid Icarus, The Dragon Warrior and Final Fanstasy games (back when RPGs would eat you alive) and a few others but I never heard of anyone beating this game without cheating.
Oh I agree on Framed Roger Rabbit too talk about uselessly hard end bosses.

Funniest one next to the TMNT review. Looks like he'll be doing Nightmare on Elm Street next. Should be good, that game was almost as big a turd as Friday the 13th. Man, so many wasted childhood hours trying to beat that fucking thing.

Most of the time he is right, but it seems almost too easy to pick on Nintendo games like this. He puts on way too much of an act over tiny things (mostly due to the limitations of the system). Also, the drinking beers thing, and the carefully memorized tourettes rants.... such eye-rollers.
The Friday review was well scripted though. He just tries way too hard to play a character. With Maddox, Something Awful, Buddyhead, and (insert name of loudmouth flamebait who rants and insults people at your favorite mess board, yet never gets banned - here) crawling all over the internet, there just isn't room for more criti-comedy.
Not that I find this act to be any better, but for you guys who like gaming rants... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3b8G8delDlk)

Power Glove with "Nigga Stole My Bike!" muzak for the win!
Hehe, this one was pretty great, too. Not as awesome as the Friday the 13th review since that one was actually pretty tense at times (it felt like I was watching a Ft13th movie), but the Freddy killings were pretty good.
His forced swearing gets on my nerves at times, but hearing his clones saying multiple shit was pretty great, haha. Diarrhea on the cartridge was...blech :(

Possibly the obvious Rad Racer (as featured in The Wizard)? Then again it might be a spooky-themed game to fit in with Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. But then again again, Halloween is over now. So who knows.

Well, it did end with Castlevania music, so maybe he'll review Castlevania as played with the Power Glove (since it's a compatible game), but I'm leaning toward him playing random games with the Power Glove and making it a general review of said device (which, of course, will be bad).

So now he's known as the Angry Video Game Nerd. Reason? From his MySpace:
New name: Angry Video Game Nerd
So there we have it:
the new name: ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD
so am I going to change the theme song? Am I going to change the domain names (AngryNESNerd.com & TheAngryNintendoNerd.com)? Am I going to change the myspace url? The youtube account?
No. At least, not anytime soon.
So think of me as THE ANGRY NINTENDO NERD (a.k.a. THE ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD)
Reasons for the new name:
1) Now I'm clearly not restricted to only reviewing Nintendo games, although it will still be my main area of interest.
2) To avoid lawsuits.
Reason for the decision:
"Angry Video Game Nerd" felt the most specific. Try to think of it as if you're hearing the name for the very first time, not knowing who I am or what I do.
Lots of fans considered how it may sound in the theme song which is also a good thing to consider. I spoke with my musician Kyle Justin and he thinks it can still work. However, it doesn't really matter because I'm not planning on changing the song for a while.
So anyway, thanks everyone for your input, suggestions and understanding in the name change.
I just wanted to explain the decision.
-A.N.N. aka A.V.G.N.
Just doesn't sound right as Angry Nintendo Nerd is fun to say and is straight to the point with "Nintendo" in the name. Angry Video Game Nerd just sounds so...generic. But eh, I guess.
Adamm R)))
11-14-2006, 08:57 AM
I also saw that. Also, this contributes to it:
Screwattack.com and I are planning on selling merchandise and a DVD of all my reviews sometime soon. The only problem is that, the word "Nintendo" is gonna have to go, because of legal reasons.
While all of you will forever know me as the "Angry Nintendo Nerd", the name on the DVD and merchandise will have to say "Angry Video Game Nerd" or something like that.
I know there's been about 3 songs written about me, and I know it sucks to change the name, but when I first came up with the name, I gave it no thought, because I had NO IDEA how popular it would become.
I suppose you could fit "video game" into the space of "Nintendo" in the theme song, if two syllables were sung faster or possibly saying "vid-yo" to lose a syllable. Anyway, not a big fan of the name change, but 1) it's inevitable, 2) it doesn't matter anyway.
Also, he recently posted in a MySpace bulletin (yeah, I added him :D) that he was working on "the powerglove one", so possibly it's just a mix of stuff that involves the powerglove.

Yeah, I saw that on gametrailers yesterday. I have three HUGE memories of that game that I played endlessly as a kid (not understanding a lick), just because it was Ghostbusters.
Three things that always stood out -
"GHUZE-BUZERS!"
Those awful driving bits that I would always run out of gas on.
The stairs (I used a game genie to cheat them too. Never beat Gozer though due to distracting complications of what the fuck is going on.)
Glad to see the videos are less scat and swear now a days and more insight on the confusing aspects of those old NES games that just expected you to know how everything works.
Also, who's this lunchbox trying to be funny doing the same thing? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzr7n143aoM) If you can make it past the embarassing introduction, he goes on to moan and bore you to tears while playing Jaws (Which actaully is a pretty kick ass game).

The two reviews are continuations of the Ghostbusters one, ragging on other GB titles because he hated the Nintendo one that much. lol They're not too good though honestly because of the fact they're just extensions. Still though, you get a good look at the one good GB game that was for the Genesis, he actually liked that one. That one was actually pretty badass.
There was another good one Hal Labs made called New Ghostbusters 2 (He doesn't review that one) but it was JP onry. I think you can play it online though.

Well going into a game based on Independence Day of all things I'd imagine crap is to be expected. I do agree he's kind of lost the initial charm since its all starting to seem the same now but like Milhouse it really depends on the game. I hadn't even played Die Hard and I thought that one was funny.
Whats funny about a lot of his reviews isn't necessarilly their credit, because so much of what he complains about is really anal and minor shit. Whats funny more is just how certain games are put into perspective and just the idea of the overreaction. I think thats what he wanted when he made this character.
He's got a lot of options if he looks in the Simpsons department. I'd love to see him tackle Bart's Nightmare just to see how he reacts to the Indianna Jones spoof level and how seemingly random it is. I kinda strangely liked that game but also fully acknowledge its not very well put together.

YES! Bart Vs Space Mutants is a PERFECT candidate..In fact, I would do a review including all Simpson games. Everyone released from my gaming days SUCKED.
Pretty much, thats why if this new EA game ends up being actually decent that'd be quite an acomplishment for a Simpsons game. Hit and Run wasn't bad though, I enjoyed looking around the town and the crazy plot. Road Rage you can't really complain about since its basically Crazy Taxi exactly with a Simpsons mod over it. But the rest yeah, they have reputation. We mentioned in a thread about it sometime ago though that Bart's Nightmare and Virtual Bart have a strange charm to them. I know they're not good games in both design and well...everything gameplay wise. But the idea was quirky and just somehow...even if they were really hard I couldn't help but sorta like them for some reason.
Maybe it was because they had that really trippy old season feel, whenever someone had a dream. But in general...I dunno.

Sloppy Jimbo IV
07-18-2007, 08:40 AM
i was a pretty retarded kid at games when i started out. when i rented bart vs the spacemutants i remember getting stuck at the very first obstacle, which i think was a crowd control barrier. i had the game for a whole day and was never able to clear the damn jump
im guessing i had to do that super jump (B + A) to clear it? anyway yeah thats embarrassing. i probably couldve read the instruction manual i suppose but i was like 6 at the time. even if i could read (which i doubt i could) theres no way i should have to to figure out how to jump something less than the character's height
the last time i remember playing the game was at a friend's house on the master system when i was 9 or so. it was pretty shitty then and its pretty shitty now, so i agree with the nerd and his video was good. much better than the ID4 one anyway
with that said, im not really sure if im buying his 'anger' anymore. these latest few themed videos are kinda dicey imo. instead of coming from his own personal memories and frustrations they seem more like things hes been obligated to do. some of his complaints seems fairly trivial and less sincere than in his older videos, which takes away slightly from the concept
but then what do i know. i cant even clear a simple crowd control barrier
I still can't believe there's actually a "dead end" where you have to die to escape (the part with Maggie.). I remember that part.
I think you were able to climb that little vertical shaft on the right. It's been awhile, though, so I'm not sure.
Good video. I thought some of his complaints in Bart vs. the World arised out of him just sucking as a NES gamer. Then again, it does take awhile to master that jump technique.

One thing he does overexaggerate is hitting the bird perched atop the Jebediah Springfield statue in Space Mutants. It's ridiculously easy to hit one time if you know where to stand on the sidewalk, but he makes it sound as if it's impossible. He just never gave it time to figure out, I guess.
Sloppy Jimbo IV
07-18-2007, 10:42 AM
yeah thats the type of thing i mean about trivial complaints. its funny but it also feels a bit contrived, like he was actually looking for stuff to complain about for the sake of the review/his persona, rather than it being issues that legitimately drove him wild as a kid (the gap in TMNT, the warp tornado in castlevania 2)

Well like others I was really young when I played that. Although I was usually pretty okay at figuring things out, the extremely frustrating controls and the equivalent of collision detection (I felt like a lot of times I missed platforms I should have landed on too) probably frustrated me so much I just didn't think about it by that point.
yeah thats the type of thing i mean about trivial complaints. its funny but it also feels a bit contrived, like he was actually looking for stuff to complain about for the sake of the review/his persona, rather than it being issues that legitimately drove him wild as a kid (the gap in TMNT, the warp tornado in castlevania 2)
Yeah I can see that. A page ago I mentioned that part of the fun of these for me is just the idea of it and the nerd ranting itself more than the trivial details, because often he does complain about very trivial things. Thats whats funny though, its literal nerd rage. But the only problem with something like this is inevitably he's going to run out of material, which is why in another post I say him having his own show wouldn't work (when that was suggested).
Although...he hasn't really touched the SNES too much yet. I bet there's some "gems" he has personal experience with hating that he hasn't touched yet.

I'm sad that he didn't comment on anything after the mall like the T-Rex and the museum. That was the hardest part to me, everything else was cake.
Bart vs. the World I liked less 'cause I thought it was a little harder to figure out and just plain less fun to play with the platforming. I also had some shitty glitch in Egypt that couldn't let me get past the Pyramid area at all.

I don't know about that, but it only sold 80,000 copies. so I guess that's pretty rare for a video game.

I was more of a Sega fan so never read much of them. I know a friend of mine in grade school had a letter or picture or something in one issue. I dont think I ever saw it though..
I had a subscription to EGM..along with a few other mags Id grab once in a while if I was bored in a store. I remember $5 for a mag back then was expensive..But they usually entertained for a couple weeks.
I should go dig mine out of my parents basement and hang up some of the old posters.

It still amazes me how difficult these games were - considering at the time most gamers were around 10 years old!
Yes..We are all still VERY weary of movies becoming games since the NES/SNES/Genesise days. Basically..every movie into a game was AWFUL. I cant think of one good example..
Is it still that way with games today? Or are they a little better?
Id like to see him review some Turbo Grafx 16, Atari Jag, or 3do games as well..Just for fun.

Naw, I haven't seen it in years. Possible I've got it buried away in some box at my brother's house.
It was in response to them giving Gran Turismo 2 a perfect 10 score which they hadn't done in years and I was pissed because the game shipped with so many bugs. I mean, they hold the perfect 10 score in such high regard they don't give it to any game for years and then all of a sudden a game ships with so many bugs in it and it gets a 10? So I wrote in complaining about that and the headline they made for the letter was, "Gran Turismo sucks?" So of course they printed my email address and I start getting flame mail from people and I had to explain that it was EGM who put that title on there. If they'd go back and read what I actually wrote, I said it was a good game, just not deserving of the 10.

I have been a fan of his videos since way back when he posted the Turtles one I can recolect!:silly:
I just stumbled across this site that has every NES game AVGN reviews to play, even the unauthorized Bible Aventures. It's pretty good if you don't own an NES console or can't get your hands on any games he reviews to give a little try, not that you'd want to, according to him, anyway.

12-26-2007, 09:45 PM
I voted just for Quest 64 in that poll just because it was the single worst, most demoralizing thing that I've played to this day. Everything that I read about it then (day and night changing, direct control of the character in combat, leveling up by performing the actions directly) made it sound so very, very cool and next gen as an RPG, but turned out to suck so very, very bad. And I know I'm not the only one to fall for that hype. The world can only improve the more that game is ripped into.
I actually did beat Home Alone 2, though it was for the SNES. Same essentially game though, right down to that evil elevator luggage bombardment. Was a clear cash-in even there, I can only imagine how the scaling down to the NES and the fucking Gameboy could make this bad game even worse.

02-22-2008, 06:28 PM
I saw it. I thought it was pretty funny, I remember the Virtual Boy quite well.
Getting that down on the fact it's not literally virtual reality is a bit silly, albiet amusingly silly of course; I didn't personally know anyone that was expecting it to literally be virtual reality. The fact this thing was marketed as a handheld though...looking the way it did...well as much as I love Gunpei Yokoi for creating Metroid and doing a lot of good for Nintendo in so many ways...what on Earth was he thinking when he made that thing? (Way they treated him after though was still inexcusable considering how much he did for that company.)
The thing I remember most about the Virtual Boy is it gave me the most unique feeling migrane I've ever felt. It's hard to describe...it's like having a migrane and being buzzed at the same time while having the feeling of someone flashing bright lights into your eyes...that's the best way I can describe it. Never had another one quite like it since. Kinda scary, you couldn't pay me to look into one of those things again.

He just recently put out his Cinemassacre 200th video, which is a documentary on how he got started making films. It's on Youtube.
