I own 1-7 already, and plan to get 8 and 9 as well. I am thinking I might be done after that, although i do want to hear the commentaries on those seasons.
im going to get every season. i havent seen 80% of scully's seasons, so that'll be quite interesting to watch...

I don't mind those episodes either (expect maybe Guess Who's Coming to Criticise Dinner) but there's a large number of members here at NHC (and others) who think S11 is one of the worst seasons so it would be interesting to hear what the Writers/Producers/etc think of those episodes.
i know i should get them all, but i don't know.
i would be rather curious to hear what they have to say on the commentries for the season 11, 12, 13+, but i basically lost interest in the show, in say, season 14 - so i am not sure if i would bother purchasing a dvd for a shows series of episodes that i don't usually tend to enjoy. but since i am a big fan of the show, maybe i might feel obligated to buy every season
i must admit though, the audio commentries would probably get a tad bit boring after a while. but i don't know, i am definatly going to buy season FOR SURE... mainly to hear the questions josh and bill will be answering in regards to nhc. that should be pretty cool
i have always found al jean to be the most informative and he obviously will be telling us very interesting information on the season 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 commentries, so i guess that will probably give me atleast one good reason to buy the dvd's of those said seasons. and there is also the hope that john swartzwelder will make an appearance on them too
but i really have no idea when they will be released, but i am assuming that it will be a VERY long time before we get every single season released, but if i am passionate, i can wait - so it basically all depends on my opinion on the show at the time
on another note, i will be buying the movies dvd, just for the commentry, even if i think that the movie was a motherfucking piece of shit that was horribly retarded :jackson:.
a long, long audio commentry with all the classic, best writers shall be fun to hear! :nerd:
there's a large number of members here at NHC (and others) who think S11 is one of the worst seasons so it would be interesting to hear what the Writers/Producers/etc think of those episodes.
exactly dude
i want to hear the negative comments the writers have to say about the fans. and i want to hear if ian maxton-graham really doesn't give a fuck about what the fans think
Even if swartzwelder isnt on any of the episode commentaries, we should cross our fingers for him to be on the one for the movie...
and about what ian maxtone-graham has to say about us...we only have to wait a couple more months, buh :)
All of them, at this stage, may change in the future depending on whether i decide i need them all.

Ill stop when I have them all. I laughed when I was reading my S1 boxset and matt claimed the show would be released before the next format came along.
Cerpin Taxt
06-27-2006, 10:47 AM
I laughed at that too. But if they do release in Blu-Ray, they should be identical to the DVDs so that we can just pick up season whatever and all that'll change is the logo.
Anyway, I'll be buying them all. I never really had a problem with Mike Scully too much (well 11 and 12 will be hard to put money down for, but I can do it), and the show has improved as of late.

I'll probably stop after Season 8, because once season 9 started, the simpsons started going downhill, but don't get me wrong there are some good episodes in season 9, but overall, it's not that good.
This shouldn't even be an issue: Buy the Seasons you like and RENT the seasons you hate (just for the commentaries)!

Same here. I honestly can't contemplate having a partial collection of the seasons.

Why would you stop buying them?
It's The Simpsons? I love to own them all, yes with heads on... Limited editions are so nice, even if the box seems like it's going to break!
Also, the next generation DVD format, has that been decided? As we all know there are 2 going head to head!
i may be one of those people that lost interest after around S15 or S16, but i would still want to own them all. Special features, commentaries.. as much as i think the show has gone downhill, it will always be one of my all-time favourite shows.

It's interesting that people complain so much about the later seasons, yet are willing to shell out 30-50$ to own them.
I think part of that in the eyes of most members (I may be wrong), 10+ are just awful by comparison (the old "they suck, but still better than anything else on TV" comes up in topics like this, which is honestly complete bullshit). I think I'll buy every season because I find every season entertaining in some way, just some are a hell of a lot better than others. Also, I'm a bit of a completist, but I still think I wouldn't shell out £300 on seasons that I don't like. The commentaries alone are worth quite a bit (and I do re-listen to them from time to time) and I'd say the show has only done about 20 or so really poor episodes, so I will still buy them. If there was one season that was awful, I think I'd still buy them all though, because a collection missing only one would suck, even if it was awful. Two, I may. Three, probably not.

I will definitely purchase season 8 (two weeks!), but I'm still making up my mind about season 9. On the one hand, it's the season when the show declined, and I typically only like to collect the seasons that a show is in its prime. On the other hand, this is The Simpsons, and there are plenty of good and even great episodes in that season to justify a purchase (for one thing, it contains Lisa's Sax, which I place in my top ten). I'll most likely end up buying it though, but considering my dilemma with a borderline season, there is no way I'd buy any of the double-digit seasons.
Cerpin Taxt
07-30-2006, 09:59 PM
Wait, so if like season 3 out of a 6 season show sucked, you would only buy 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 and let them sit on your shelf like that?
Homer^3
07-30-2006, 10:36 PM
Wait, so if like season 3 out of a 6 season show sucked, you would only buy 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 and let them sit on your shelf like that?
Sorry, I didn't compose that as clearly as I would have liked. I mean I will keep buying seasons of a show on DVD until the season when the show "jumped the shark" or went downhill or whatever. But if a show has an off-season and then recovers, I will still buy that lesser season.
For example, my favorite TV show ever is 24. In my opinion, the third season of that series is the weakest. If the show's fourth and especially fifth seasons weren't such a tremendous improvement in quality compared to S3, I would've stopped at S2. Does that make sense?
As far as The Simpsons goes, I'm having trouble deciding if I want only the "golden era" (plus the build-up to it) in my collection or that plus season nine, which is "halfway golden". If the show had immediately recovered in S10 though, then I would keep buying, no question.
Cerpin Taxt
07-31-2006, 09:10 AM
Alright, I've gotcha.
Yeah, season 3 of 24 was kinda weak. Why is there such an abundance of people who think it was the best?
Homer^3
07-31-2006, 02:02 PM
I'm not sure...I've thought a lot about this because in the last year or so I've noticed a lot of people rate it as the best season of all. I've watched 24 since the pilot episode and nearly gave up after the first six or so eps in S3. It has so many problems and is such a disjointed mess that it's tough for me to even rewatch it start to finish. I honestly haven't heard or read anything that convinces me this season is better than any of the others.

07-31-2006, 08:30 PM
I honestly want someone to explain to me, besides the fact that Homer is over-represented, the problems with the later seasons. And yes, since people like "Brent" like to generalize, I don't want to hear about the Scully seasons, I want to hear why the show has sucked for years now.
Homer^3
07-31-2006, 08:43 PM
Are you referring to the criticism that Jean's seasons aren't up to par by some fans, or every season after #8?
What makes you think they will stop at 19?
I think he misinterpreted the fact that at the moment it's only been signed until season 19 (but will more than likely be signed up for more when the time comes), so he thought they had just signed for two seasons and then they will stop making it or something.
Cerpin Taxt
07-31-2006, 10:37 PM
Yeah, especially since I've heard rumors that it was renewed for another 5 years.
And yes, Homer^3, that was what I was referring to. I think to lump all of those together is wrong.
Well...at the moment it's only been renewed for 2 years (taking us to the end of seaso 19), but I actually remember reading an interview (or part of an interview) where the President of Fox (or someone similar) said something along the lines of "...the Simpsons won't be cancelled until long after I'm dead and buried", so it looks like new episodes will be made for a long time, because it doesn't look like Fox has given up on them.
Cerpin Taxt
07-31-2006, 11:14 PM
Mostly because they still make Fox a lot of money.
Yep, exactly. Thats the only reason why they resurrected Family Guy, because they knew everyone would buy the dvds for the new episodes, therefore giving them for green in the blue, the blue being their pants. ;)

That was one of their gravest errors, the old episodes made a great series on their own.
I honestly want someone to explain to me, besides the fact that Homer is over-represented, the problems with the later seasons. And yes, since people like "Brent" like to generalize, I don't want to hear about the Scully seasons, I want to hear why the show has sucked for years now.
The Scully Era turned the Simpsons into a stupid-Saturday morning-esque cartoon show, while the Jean ear has stablized the show, but it's now as exciting as a Ford Focus doing 30 mph.
What Seasons 1-8 is/was, was a show that you actually cared about the charactes and cared about what the events were that were unfolding as the plot progressed. Post Season 9 Simpsons episodes seem like strung together jokes that tries to look like a plot in the end.

Cerpin Taxt
08-15-2006, 12:48 PM
I don't understand why some fans are buying thes just for the commentaries, but that's why we're all different people. I suppose they can be watched just as often as the regular episodes themselves if you really like them. I think I just got burnt out because I had never watched them prior to S7 and watched all of them up to that point in about a month.

I'll wait until the sets after 10 get under $20, because I just want to hear the reasoning behind most of the episodes, also call it a crazy hunch, but what if Swartzwelder were to comment on Simpsons Safari, only to tell us off and say "You wouldnt know comedy, even if you had a comedy...finding machine." Well...maybe not so much that, but to make us have to buy the set just to hear him once.
Anyway, those episodes just arent high on my list. Although I may go for the episodes for the current seasons, I just wish they werent so...short.

I will stop buying the DVDs when either:
a) I start getting them for free;
b) they are made available on another format such as Blu-Ray or brain implant chip
Speaking of brain implant chips. How far off are those things? What kind of resolution can the brain handle? Obviously they'll only be 2 channel sound and how many episodes with commentaries do you think they can fit on a single chip?
HomerX
08-29-2006, 07:50 AM
I'll be buying everything - partly out of gratitude.
Yes, seasons 11-17 are mere shadows of the show at its best. But for ten years, some of the most talented writers, animators, voice actors and producers made ten seasons of comedy/animation/satire gold. And really, wasn't the best end possible that the show would go on for too long?
I will buy the DVDs and contribute to the longevity of the series, because I think the show deserves it. I think the show deserves to grow so old that every topic has been covered, every joke has been made and even the lowliest A-list actor in Hollywood has guest starred. Yes, sometimes watching new episodes can be excruciating, but there will always be a part of me who doesn't want it to go away.
I guess this is my fanatic streak. Of course, I'm also curious to hear the commentaries for season 14 et al.

I never see myself NOT buying the DVDs for several reasons:
1) I'm an obsessive DVD collector (we're talking 1000+ movies/tv shows) and a completist -- for shows I really enjoy, I tend to buy every season available
2) I'm a series-long Simpsons fan who has unintentionally accumlated a lot of Simpsons merchandise over the last 17 years. If I'm going to spend $250 on a framed production drawing, I'm not going to say no to buying $30 DVD seasons
3) The quality of all the box sets has been fantastic -- better than almost any other long-running series released on DVD (in fact, I can't think of a show that has had multiple seasons that have done as consistent of a job in producing the DVDs, extras, etc). I've had every episode downloaded for several years now, but I'm a total AV nerd and I like having the best picture/sound available, plus, even if the episodes aren't universally great -- the extra features make up for it. Some shows, that isn't the case -- they'll replace music/delete scenes, offer almost no extra content AND charge way more than they should -- for those shows, I'll only buy the GOOD seasons, I won't waste my money on a "meh" set of shows if there isn't any good content and the show has been altered.
4) It's the freaking Simpsons. There's just now way I "wouldn't" buy it. I'm almost 24 years old and my mother still buys me a new Simpsons wall calendar every single year -- and she's always had a certain amount of disdain for my Simpsons love.
The only way I wouldn't buy them would be if they were released bare-bones without extras. In that case, no thank you, I'll just enjoy my AVI copies.

I will never stop buying these seasons. I'm a simpson's commentary junkie. I also agree with thischarmingham about the china episode. I wish that the simpson's writers would do a little research on the countries that they portray rather than just using all of the cliches and stereotypes. They really have the ability to influence people's understanding of other cultures. I can't tell you how many times I have heard a young person treat something that they saw on the simpson's as fact.

I want to say 1-14, but I know I am a completist at heart.
You are one of the people that I think are moronic because you think they are not fans just because they hate a season or hate an episode. Everyone is allowed to hate certain seasons/episodes. You have to learn that the world doesn't revolve around you and your little thoughts that you think are correct.
if you ever stopped buying the dvd's u could not call yourself a simpsons's fan as for me i will never stop buying them.

Honestly, there's a difference between hating an episode before you've seen it (for free) and not having the slightest interest in paying for something you already have seen and judged to be bad.
