Seeing the flashes of reminiscence in the Nintendo thread got me in the mood for some heavy NES discussion on personal nostalgia, actual game quality and collecting.

I really do wish my NES still worked, there's a lot of games I want to check out that I've had people recommend to me
I was a total Super Mario Bros junkie, I couldnt get enough of that game. I used to go around to relatives houses who I hated just because they had SMB. I remember it was a double cart with Duck Hunt.
I was always much more into the Sega's, and I loved my Master System and Genesis but goddamn I was jealous of Nintendo owners who had the Mario games.

Still play my NES regularly. Probably more than my PS2. And still buying games for it every chance I get. Even if the game may not look too enticing and/or if I don't remember it much, if the price is right, I'll get it. Why not? Fun for a few hours for a couple of dollars.
Bought Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warship and Bionic Commando for $1 each just recently. Man, do I hate that fucking pod in SJ.

Someone already beat me to Bionic Commando. I don't think I ever beat that game. If this is the game I'm thinking of, I got to the end and there was 2 doors. I chose the wrong door, game over.

I sucked at that game so much but I still loved it. Much like Marble Madness, Skate or Die 1 and 2, and Snake Rattle n Roll. I sucked at a lot of NES games back then, though. Couldn't even get past the dogs on the 4th screen or so in Metal Gear.
Remebering the Love:
Maniac Mansion
SMB 1-3
Double Dragon 2
Bad Dudes (I'm Bad!)
Bases Loaded (A 2.5 meg game in 1988!)
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
The NES is the first game system I went nuts over and is tied with the Genesis as my favorite gaming system.

I can't remember if it was NES or SNES, but there was this Beach Volleyball game that was pretty cool. The spikes were powerful and if you really nailed it, you could bean the opponent with the ball and send them flying backwards.

For NES, you may be referring to Super Spike V-Ball, a classic game indeed.
As is...
Skate or Die.
Zelda 1.
Bart Vs. The world (the best of the old ones)
Punch Out
Double Dragon 3.
...I could go on for hours.
I actually still have my original NES system from when I was a weee lad in 87. The fucking thing still works! My personal machine has a weird little method.
Insert Cart - Push Power - wiggle cart from left to right until red power light starts blinking - Keep wiggling cart till when red power light blinks "on" you see the game start for a second - Push reset - ENJOY!
Oh dear lord. I have forgotten about Maniac Mansion. I LOVED this game. THat is until someone stole it in the 4th grade.. ARGH. THis is the one I miss the most.

My family owned a NES for a couple of years before I had the courage to pick up the controller and try it out (being the shy 4-year old that I was). The first games I ever played were Paperboy and Kung Fu. To the best of my knowledge, here's a list of the games I was able to obtain for the NES:
Super Mario Brothers I, II, and III: Classics, need I say more?
Legend of Zelda I and II: See above.
Ninja Gaiden I and II: So painfully difficult, and yet somehow I managed to beat them with a lot of practice. I loved watching the cinema sequences over and over, even if some were a little freaky when I was a kid.
Ghosts and Goblins: I could never get past the second level, and by the time I heard of the stage select, it had stopped working.
Monster Party: An unknown, disturbing, gory, crazy game, and I loved it. How could you not love a game with such memorable boss lines like "Sorry, I'm Dead"?
Bionic Commando: There's no way this game could be made in today's politically correct world, but considering that I was seven and didn't know who Hitler was by then, it more or less all went over my head. Instead, I remembered this game it's images of a face exploding.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!: My older sibling was so good at this game that I never even tried to outdo him. With alot of blood and sweat, he was able to beat Tyson by decision, but I never got past Bald Bull. I've so wanted to play this game again (but not Punch-Out!! with that pansy Mr. Dream at the end).
Adventures of Lolo III: Everyone needs a break from violence to flex their brain muscles once and a while, and the Lolo games did that nicely for me. We never got that far in the game (about area 7), so we didn't bother with the other two games.
Final Fantasy: I loved this game so much, and it may have started my fascination with RPG's. Long live the Red Mage!
Dragon Warrior: A little too sophisticated for me at first, so it took a while for me to try it out, but it was still alot of fun. I loved the princess' schtick of asking if you cared about her: "Dost Thou Love Me?" (No) "But Thou Must! Dost Thou Love Me?". I always wanted to see if she'd crack.
Paperboy: Like I said, one of the first games I played. Easy, fun, and low on violence (unless you want to count the cranky old ladies, the ravenous dogs, or the Grim Reaper).
Kung Fu: The other first game I played, due to it's simplicity.
Baseball: I'm not a big player of sports games nowadays, but in a time when things were simpler and you didn't have to worry about all of those stats and players, I thought they were fun.
NES Play Action Football: I dug this game since it had actual players in it, my team was the New York Giants.
Bad News Baseball: Still quite possibly my favorite sports game of all time. Very fun, but deep enough for experienced gamers. I also loved the play at the plate (or base) movies and that the umpires were rabbits.
Double Dragon I and III: I had I and III, and my cousin had II, and I liked all of them. I don't remember why Jimmy was the bad guy at the end of the first one and then why he was an ally in the next two, but whatever, it was the 80's.
Rampage: Nice arcade fun, and even more entertaining with a buddy, even if it does get repetitive (very, very repetitive).
Karnov and Codename: Viper: My uncle bought these two games for me when I was ten, and after we had already gotten a Super NES, so naturally I never really gave them a chance. Maybe I should have.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I and II: I never did manage to beat the first game (I got past the blimp level, but don't recall getting farther), though I knew the second one like the back of my hand.
Dr. Mario: A nice, simple puzzle game, though in retrospect, not quite deep enough to hang with the big boys like Tetris or Panel De Pon.
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest: I borrowed this game so much from my cousin I practically owned it. I loved the RPG elements and the night and day concepts. The disturbing story and details went over my head as a child. I also loved that there were multiple endings (Simon dies in one of them, and it's not even the worst ending!).
Rad Racer I and II: My older sibling loved these games, though I was never much of a racer myself.
Bart vs. the Space Mutants: The memories of spray painting purple objects red, using x-ray specs, calling Moe's Tavern, and more will live with me forever. A fiendishly difficult game, and yet I had the patience to get through it all.
Ducktales and Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers: I liked them both, though the money-collecting element of Ducktales put it slightly ahead. I did like the cooperative gameplay of Chip 'n' Dale though.
A Boy and His Blob: I don't know why we got this game, but I'm glad we did. I was obsessed enough to memorize what every jelly bean did, though I've forgotten most of them by now (except a few like licorice=ladder, apple=jack, cola=bubble, coconut=coconut).
There were a number of games that I also played a bit, though I never owned them:
Double Dragon II: The only thing that stunk about the first game was that there was no two player cooperative mode, but this game fixed that, and it was plenty fun as a result. The level inside the helicopter was genius.
Castlevania and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse: I was turned off by the difficulty of these games, but I wish I had stuck with them, since I hear the third one was one of the best ever.
Battletoads: Very fun, but mind-numbingly hard (even after the speeder-bike level). This game would have been a classic for me if there had been unlimited continues, a password system, or a save feature, but instead it's simply a much too difficult game that I never managed to beat (got to the fire tunnel stage, but that's about it).
Bart vs. the World: I rented it and liked it, but I never finished it. I'd love to try this one again though, and the mini-games were a blast.
Ninja Gaiden III: I was even harder than the other two, and unlike them, there were a limited number of continues, so I never even bothered. It also didn't help that the story was terrible, but now I'll never know who killed Irene (that is unless I go to a cheat site to find out, which I think I will).
Shadowgate: The Grim Reaper creeped me out too much for me to invest any serious time in this game. This game makes me wish I had tried out Maniac Mansion, but I didn't.
Dragon Warrior II and III: I loved Final Fantasy, so I naturally I bought into the multiple party elements of Dragon Warrior III, and yet I never bothered to buy either of these games. Again, my cousin had both, so my parents didn't see why we needed one too.
Duck Hunt: I'd always cheat and stand right next to the TV while playing, but it was worth it to keep that stupid dog from laughing at me. We had one of the original light guns colored black and grey instead of orange and grey.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project: It seems to be the forgotten member of the NES TMNT family, but it could quite possibly have been the best. There was multiplayer, and unlike II, the turtles had unique abilities. I rented it and beat it, so we never bothered buying it, but it was great fun.
Despite all of these great games I played there were a number that I always wanted to play, but never got a chance to, like Maniac Mansion, Excitebike, or the R.O.B. games.

That fucking Turtles game was the bane of my life. I loved those Turtles more than anything and I was determined to complete it but it was just too damn hard. Countless hours wasted and I never finished it :(
My fondest NES memories are of Mario 1 and 3 (didn't own 2, didn't really care for it all that much), completing them and seeing that goombas were now buzzy beetles and I had loads of p-wings. I must've completed them both about a thousand times. Good times.
I had a bunch of games that were pretty damn good and I kept playing them for years and years until my NES died... Paperboy, Rainbow Island, Super Off Road, Micro Machines, Duck Hunt; all top games. My memory is failing me, there must've been more than that. The only others I can think of are Marble Madness and Chip 'n' Dale, both OK but a bit meh.
I didn't own Bart vs. The Space Mutants, but I borrowed it for a while and I couldn't complete that game either and gave up after a few months. If I recall correctly I kept getting killed by a dinosaur... what the fuck was a dinosaur doing there?

Truth be told I never had an NES at the time (I did buy one off a friend a few years ago though, and have gradually built a collection). But when I was at a friend's house, man oh man, it was all about Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, Ducktales, and Turtles 2 with co-op. And the best part about going to daycare was playing Mario 3. I'd savor every minute with it.
Also, I discovered a few months ago that this game rules:

I fucking love 'Punch-Out.' Not only was it fun as hell, but it was filled with stereotypes that crack me up 'til this day: With the wimpy Frenchman, the drunk Russian, and a fatty joke to boot, it offends on every level. (Wordplay. Hardy-har.)
But Super Mario Bros. is probably my favorite. As well as Contra. Man, those pseudo-3-D-ish levels were amazing back then.

Am I alone in thinking that TMNTII:The arcade game was the superiour cartridge in the turtle genre?
Not at all. It's true that the turtles lack any variety amongst themselves and the attacks were kind of simple, but the gameplay was still a blast with one or two players. Plus it was a port of an already classic arcade game (right up there with X-men and The Simpsons for arcade side-scrollers) with two new levels and bosses thrown in for good measure. All three games were a blast, but the first one was a little too difficult at times, and the sometimes unbalanced gameplay in the third made it too easy. The second one held up for a long time for me, and it's my personal favorite of the trio.

The Manhattan Project blew.
The first game did, too (seriously, did anyone make it past that goddamn dam level where you had to defuse all those bombs in an insanely short amount of time?), but I didn't care when I was a kid and it'll always be a classic to me.
But yes, The Arcade Game is one of the best arcade-to-console ports of all time, and one of the best games period.

Life Force (which took an eternity for me to find)
Crystalis
Rolling Thunder (I love collecting Tengen games)
Gyruss
Ikari Warriors
Track & Field II (these last two I haven't been able to get working yet)
these I got from an EB for $12 all together
Astyanax
Captain Skyhawk
Goal
Klax (see Rolling Thunder)
Lee Travino's Fighting Golf (of which they had a surprising abundance)
Phantom Fighter
Racket Attack
Rescue: The Embassy Mission (crazy spy game kind of like Golgo 13 that mixes numerous mini-games)
The Rocketeer (surprisingly decent for licensed crap)
Roller Games (hilarious mix of roller derby and double dragon)
Star Voyager
Winter Games
With these I'm up to 143 NES carts

Turtles II was by far the best, and the actual arcade version has gotten quite a bit of play from me in rom form. Konami easily made the best of all of those Double Dragon-esque scrolling beat em' ups (Simpsons, both turtles games, X-Men), and Turtles II was no exception. The first one completely lacked that charm, being that it was more of a traditional platformer, and not really a very good one. Manhatten Project is pretty good I think, but it feels like it's missing something somehow. Incidentally, if anyone knows of any sites that might have Turtles II fairly cheap, I'd be thankful.
Moving out to a dorm tomorrow, and this thread has partially inspired me to take my NES with me. :headbang

I gave away my NES in the mid 90's. What a fool I am.
I remember getting our NES in early '86. We started off with Super Mario Bros, Ice Climber, 10 Yard Fight, Duck Hunt, and Tennis.
For a few years, between us and my friends, we owned every single game. Of course, in 1988-89, they started making too many, so we just bought the "good" ones.

Good lord, how did I forget about this great game? It wasn't all that well known and wasn't particularly revolutionary; side-scrollers were fairly common and Ninja Gaiden got to cinema sequences first. Still, I really loved the story in this game, and it was the first game with a story that made me feel sad.
Cutie's sacrifice caught me completely off-guard, and even though she came back in the end, it was really heart-breaking seeing a character you stuck with you right from the start give up her life. I can't think of many games back then that were willing to go this far.

There's no reason for a walkthrough for this game because every level is essentially the same thing. I don't remember the situation, but I used to beat this game regularly with no problem, so it is probably very easy to figure out.

Gragh, level 57 just happens to be one that's not as simple as "spit, jump, repeat." The assholes shoots lasers down at you and you have to bubble jump just to get to 4 of them and they'll probably just ram into you and kill you because they move so fast..
You should check GameFAQs, they must have something for it.
EDIT:
Yeah, I just checked and they have help. I looked at the third walkthrough and it says what i say but it also says to "collect the random item in the middle of the level."

Heh, I downloaded a ROM of Friday the 13th just so I could listen to the cabin music. So simple but creepy and good.. Just like music in Nightmare on Elm Street that plays when "Freddy's comin' for you" (I almost like it more than the actual rhyme). I should probably go check Zophar's for the NSF files.

Indeed a great NES top 10. Mega Man II always was my favorite of the bunch (the Metal Blade conquers all); it was so good that they brought the bosses back for the next game as well.
I never owned Metroid, but I played it pretty regularly at my cousin's house, but usually not from the beginning, I'd just use the Justin Bailey password. Nowadays we take getting stuck for granted, since we can always find a cheat site online that can tell us where to go next or find that elusive power-up. Back then though, if you got stuck in a game like Metroid or The Legend of Zelda (which was a given considering how open-ended they were), you were on your own.
I never once played Contra or any of it's sequels or recreations on the NES or any other platform for some reason. Someday I'll have to go out there and find out what I've been missing.

Ahh you need to play Contra! It's so fun...running and shooting things..you can gun every down without even stopping once. I loved when the camera would switch from side-scrolling to following right behind in the buildings. The bosses used to scare me though, I was such a wimp. I couldn't even play Altered Beast because the boss music scared me.

How is it that I'm unfazed by that game, yet to this day I cannot watch the flying monkey scene in The Wizard of Oz without getting creeped out?
Anyway, the game was a blast, even if it was incredibly frustrating at some points, and the ending was one to remember. I'm always surprised that so few people heard about this game (most think I'm making it up when I tell them about it).

You know what? Who Framed Roger Rabbit was hard as fuck. Biggest gripe is having to tap the button to build up your punch (and it took forever) in order to do any worthy damage to anyone/anything.
Judge Doom at the end was the worst. You can continually punch his ass while you're both duking it out over the dip machine until he falls to the floor, leaving you with that deep satisfaction that you've beaten such a hard game. ONLY FOR HIM TO GET BACK UP WITH TWICE THE SPEED AND ENERGY HE HAD BEFORE SO YOU COULD FIGHT HIM AGAIN. Holy shit, did that piss me off.
I think I only beat him once, and that was with the Game Genie and the code for "instant punch"...and that may have been the last time I ever played it. Why? Because of the ending. (http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/nes/b/whorog.htm) Gah.

I liked Rygar, but never could finish it because I couldn't figure out how to slide down the ropes across the caverns in the overworld. Otherwise I did great in the platforming areas. And of course, the music in the tower rooms scared me (no one should be surprised, I was such a wimpy kid).
I remember doing fairly well in WFRR too but at one point I was supposed to get an object from somewhere and everyone told me to go to the same spot because "it's supposed to be there no matter what" and the object just wasn't there, nor was it anywhere else. I was so annoyed.

Glad to see someone else on earth actually has played Monster Party. A game that I haven't seen mentioned yet that was great was Thrilla's Surfari. A monkey on a skateboard? Crazy awesome! Ok, so I found the power cord I was looking for yesterday, plug the NES in and it does the same thing it did last time, flashing gray screen. I have no idea what's wrong with it. There was another NES in my basement, which I always assumed was broken because the cover was taken off and a bunch of parts were hanging out of it. I figured I would at least try it. I put the cover back on, glued the controller ports back in place, and plugged it in. After a couple of resets it worked fine. Only got to play Monster Party for about 20 minutes last night, but it's addictive. Good recommendation skittle.

I got a NES Advantage, but I rarely used it. Playing the games didn't feel right, I just preferred using a regular controller. It fit better for titles that had an arcade feel to them (like Double Dragon or TMNT II), but otherwise I just used the original, or the NES Max.

I owned an Advantage but it didn't work well for the kinds of games I played (Zelda, Mario, etc.). It did come in handy in the first couple of Mega Man games (before he gained the chargeable Mega Buster ability in MM4) when you could rapid-fire 'bots to death! But the orientation of the controller was cumbersome.
I seem to recall a certain handheld NES controller I got for Christmas one year, it was the shape of a SNES controller, with turbo A + B buttons right above the regular ones. It was great! If I ever find a picture of it I'll post it.

I'd never even heard of that aftermarket one, but it does look quite a bit like the SNES controller. There was also the NES Max controller, which had two standard red A and B buttons as well as two smaller grey A and B buttons which served as turbo buttons. The control pad was also replaced a circular gaming pad which made rolling motions and diagonal movement easier. I had one, and I was reluctant to use it at first, but eventually it fit like a glove. I don't have a picture of it with me, but at first I thought that was the controller BBS was talking about.

Awesome and boundless in it's loathing to the player. I wouldn't want to oversell it but it's like a mix of Prince of Persia and the early levels of Mario 64.........yet, of course nothing at all like that. But it has a seemingly impossible 3D effect on the NES. And I kind of like the game itself.

The non pornagraphic version of Bubble Bath Babes. You heard me right. And frighteningly similar to Bust-a-Move in that.....you match multi-colored bubbles....and that they rise rather than fall. Though it does allows for combos, which would technically make it a million on a scale 1 to 10.

As far as the Mega Man games go, my preference order looks something like this:
Mega Man II: The cream of the crop for me. It had the best music, the most memorable bosses, the coolest weapons, and the best learning curve (easier than most MM games, but not too easy).
Mega Man III: The bosses this time around were still really memorable, and the additions of Protoman, Rush, and the reprise of the MMII bosses were a real treat. The only thing holding the game back was the difficulty. Even with it's length (one of the longest in the series) this is got to be the easiest game of the bunch.
Mega Man I: Not my favorite, but it's still a great place to start. It has classic difficulty and bosses, and the inclusion of the platform creating item was an interesting twist (though it could have easily been frustrating for some). Only six bosses and no password feature hurts this title a little though.
Mega Man IV: The beginning of the end, but it was still a decent game. The charging feature was great and the bosses were okay. The challenge was very uneven though, some bosses were laughably easy while others were excruciatingly difficult, and the password feature is very poorly implemented by the end (even with a password you need to start at Cossack's Castle, which is about halfway through the game).
I've played through but never finished V and VI due to the anniversary collection. They seemed to really kill the series by adding too many items to collect and robot friends to help you out (Beat and the Flip Top guy), and the bosses started getting really lousy names and were very forgettable.
It's too bad the Mega Man series has become so clogged up with spin-offs and unmemorable titles, since Mega Man I-III were pure gaming goodness on the NES.

I meant to mention this last week and forgot about it. My mom had to have a tire on her SUV replaced (got a nail in it), so I was sitting around in the waiting room at the garage for a while. I noticed in the corner they had a NES hooked up to a small TV. There was also one of those zapper guns with the Duck Hunt game. So I sat there for over an hour in the kids' corner sitting on a tiny chair and shooting at animated ducks. I don't think any of those kids will be beating my 231,000 score anytime soon.

Ah.. The good old NES.
I don't have the console anymore, but I still play some of the games on my PC with an emulator. Most games are still great to play and don't get boring as some of the latest games do.
Super Mario Bros
Great serie, great fun. I Like SMB 2 the most, cause it was the only game where you could pick up enemies and throw them away. Or you could just hit them with all those weird vegetables. I used to spent hours in the sandworlds digging away all the sand. :D
Kirby's Adventure
Cool game, because Kirby could suck up enemies en steal their powers. UFO Kirby ftw!
Double Dragon 2 & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Early buttonmashing games. Great fun when you beat up baddies with a friend. :D

The anniversary collection on the Gamecube and Playstation 2 require you to, since they took the pause trick out of the game. I've beaten the game on the GC (dumb luck mostly), but I have no recollection of doing so on the original NES (the pause trick was just too tempting).
This talk of the pause trick actually reminded me of the weirdest thing that happened. When the Mega Man Anniversary Collection came out it took me over an hour to beat the Rock Monster in Mega Man I. Soon after I was finished my older brother (who's been playing games longer than I have) came into the room and started playing, and he beat the Rock Monster in one try. It was almost as if the skill and strategy had never left him after more than 15 years. I guess there are some things you just don't forget.

MM I is no doubt the most difficult one of the bunch. Since I have nothing to do for a while, I thought I would give my thoughts on some of the reasons why it is considered to be the most difficult one:
no passwords- irrelevent since I like to beat the games in one sitting and MM I is the shortest game of the series.
no immunity to spikes- didn't really bother me. Sonic 1 was the same way and I have never seen any complaints about it.
No E-tanks- Can't disagree there. Capcom should have kept the max at 4 from MM2 on though.
Guts Man's stage- never really gave me any problems.
Elec Man- it's really a matter of being quicker and more precise than him.
Ice Man's stage- this one always gives me problems too. It seems to depend on whether or not the Magnet Beam is cooperating with me.
Rock Monster- Really difficult the first few times, but once I got his pattern down, I've been able to beat him without a scratch.
Clone- This is the one that always gives my the psychotic episodes. Hyper Bomb apparently works well, but it never worked for me. every other weapon either doesn't do enough damage to it or is very difficult to dodge. I always use the regular arm cannon and pray that I have better aim.
Wily- I kill myself off the first time since I'm always on the brink of death after the 4 repeat bosses. After that, I usually have little difficulty using Fire storm for the first part and Thunder Beam for the second part.

I honestly have never been able to understand why the Rock Monster is so infamously known for challenge, even just relative for Mega Man standards. He splits apart in the same exact pattern every time and he dies pretty quickly from his weakness, pause trick or not. I can see maybe being caught off guard the first time or two, but the idea that he's among the most challenging bosses of all time baffles me.
Actually the original might be my second favorite Mega Man, behind II of course. Mainly because, being the first, it hadn't become a slave to the franchise's conventions yet. It also had a lot of quirks to it you just didn't see in the others, the chambers before the boss having enemies, spikes that always killed, scores for beating the bosses, robot bosses that actually had a point to existence other than just killing Mega Man, ect that helped it stand out from all the others.

I was playing Megaman IV recently and I actually found something new in that game that I had never found before. I found this item that gives Megaman a chain to pull him up to the ceiling. I mean wow, who knew? I've played this game so many times and I never even knew about it.

Just played MM I again, and it's not really as difficult as some people are making it out to be. The Willy stage(s) are difficult but the first stages are eaiser than MM II or MM III. Mostly because once you know what their weakness is it only becomes who can hit who more before someone dies, which is very little skill indeed.

I just played MM4. That one is known as the beginning of the decline of the series. that may be true, but it is still sentimental because it was the first one I ever played. Liked the return of the main theme in the end credits and the classic boss intro returned, but it seemed Capcom was beginning to show signs of limited creativity- the bosses were simply uptated versions of previous bosses:
Toad Man<Snake Man
Bright Man<Flash Man
Pharoh Man<Shadow Man
Ring Man<Quick Man
Dust Man<Magnet Man
Skull Man<Wood Man
Dive Man< Bubble Man
Drill Man<Crash Man

So I went thrift storing earlier on my "lunch break" to kill some time. Oh. My. God. Ninja Gaiden for $1. You read right. $1. I may have giggled like a little bitch full of excitement when I saw it in the store, and I don't care. I've got a fantastic game in my possesion now
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Around the corner was a bin full of wires and stuff that was beckoning me for some reason. What did I find in there? An original gray Nintendo Zapper. not the orange Zapper everyone has, but the first edition gray model. $2. Yes, $2.
I am one happy-ass Nintendo geek right now :D

And after doing a little research and talking with people, I guess the gray Zapper isn't really as rare as I thought it was. Turns out the gray ones can be found anywhere, but I only ever see the orange ones for sale, and this was the first time I've ever seen a gray one so I snatched it up really quick. Eh, oh well. So I've got an orange one and a gray one now. Now I can be a total dork and holster each one on my hips

I had both a gray and an orange zapper. We got our first Nintendo either Christmas of '85 or '86 with the ROB pack and gray zapper. I don't actually remember playing with ROB as a game, but I kept him in the garage closet and would play with him outside all the time. After my MUCH older cousins "borrowed" our first Nintendo, we never saw it again and so we got the more common pack with the orange zapper in '88. By then I was old enough to really like playing it anyway, so it worked out (plus I ganked my cousins Sega Genesis sometime in '93, thus getting payback).
Actually, my NES, which I paid to get refurbished and all spick-and-span and most of my games are in the posession of an ex-boyfriend. I've been trying to get them back for like two years (I have everything on my X-Box in emulator form, so I haven't felt a pressing need to deal with the awkwardness), but because of the nature of our relationship, his subsequent marriage (and his wife's utter hatred of me), I've been kind of a wuss. BUT, I found a copy of the Star Tropics sequel (name evading me at 4:40 AM) the other day for like $5, so I'm totally jonesing to get my shit back.
Skittlebrau -- for the ultimate geek-look, make sure you wear a Power Glove in addition to the double-holster. Now THAT would be hawt.

Wow, why hadn't I seen this thread sooner? I've been playing the heck out of my NES this summer, ever since I picked up some cheap classics on eBay (River City Ransom, Battletoads, Conquest of the Crystal Palace).
I'd love to find Ninja Gaiden for 1$. That's one of those rare games that I've put a lot of time into and to this day have NEVER beaten it. Freakin' level after Bloody Malth is ridiculous with its birds hitting you into pits...
Anyway, for whoever cares, here's my complete NES collection:
Adventure Island
Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
Adventures of Lolo
Battletoads
Bionic Commando
Conquest of the Crystal Palace
Contra
Dick Tracey
Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior IV
Final Fantasy
Kirby’s Adventure
The Legend of Zelda
Little Nemo, the Dream Master
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
Monster Party
NES Play Action Football
River City Ransom
StarTropics
Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
Super Mario Bros. 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Ultima Exodus
Willow
Yoshi
Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II
Zelda 2: Adventure of Link

[blow in cart]

[jab a different cart on top to hold first one down]
[turn on power]
[enjoy game]
Someone already beat me to Bionic Commando. I don't think I ever beat that game. If this is the game I'm thinking of, I got to the end and there was 2 doors. I chose the wrong door, game over.
Blaster Master rocked.
Pushing in the cart and wiggling usually did the trick. The NES sure was finicky though.

I'd recommend if you're willing to play something that is obviously terrible.

The non pornagraphic version of Bubble Bath Babes. You heard me right. And frighteningly similar to Bust-a-Move in that.....you match multi-colored bubbles....and that they rise rather than fall. Though it does allows for combos, which would technically make it a million on a scale 1 to 10.
also it's rare, AND I have the fuckin box for it BIZZNATCHES!!
I used to have a CGA graphics Castelian for PC. It was called Tower Toppler. Beautiful graphics, extremely challenging gameplay. Some nice parallax scrolling in the underwater sections.

Not bad. Not bad at all. I'm actually content with the top 20 games (but I'd switch The Legend of Zelda with Final Fantasy). Although I'd move a couple of games like Snake, Rattle & Roll and Wizards & Warriors a little further up the list. Still, one of the best lists I've seen.

MM 3 is great no question, but I think that's when the series started trying to be too cute with the bosses and by including Rush. Plus MM 2's music blows 3's out of the water.

10-06-2006, 09:33 PM
Ah yes, the ever-popular Mega Man 2 vs. Mega Man 3 debate. There's no doubt in my mind that they were far and away the two best of the series, but I've always enjoyed 2 a little bit more, and I'm glad that this list holds both of them in high regard. MM3 had great bosses and the debut of Rush and Protoman, and it's one of the lseries' longer titles (between the reprise of the MM2 bosses as well as the Rockman and the Mega Man clones from the first game), not to mention all of the great glitches that the commentary on the list mentioned. However, despite it's length it's probably the easiest Mega Man game, and it's the only one that even when I younger, I never had trouble beating. In the end I always go back to Mega Man 2, which had my favorite bosses, weapons, music, and just the right learning curve (difficult, but not frustrating like a number of the others).
Back to the list, I too would place Final Fantasy below Zelda (though they'd still be in my top ten), and Battletoads seems really high, but I won't take the time to pick the whole list apart. For a list of 100 different NES games, this one is pretty good, and looking at all the titles is great nostalgia. Between this and the Monster Party link that was posted earlier, one can waste hours and hours of time on this site. I found another list on the site of the 20 Worst Games on the NES that You May Have Actually Played, and it was a satisfying read. Sure games like the original TMNT, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Friday the 13th, and Rampage are "classics" that many have played, but man they were frustrating.

Yeah I think we can at least all agree that it was a steady downhill slide for the NES Mega Man's after 3.
Looking at it again, list should have less crap like Roger Rabbit, Bill and Ted, and Caveman Games, and more Rescue Rangers, Life Force, and Ufouria. But what do I know, I'm just a doctor.

I know all of this has been said, but since I am ultra-loyal to the NES I have to throw in my opinions as well.
The MMII vs MMIII debate is a great one, but I will always side with MMIII (barely), so no complaints there with the list.
Why anyone would put FF above Zelda is beyond me. Yes, FF was a great game, but Zelda defined my generation. If you are (about) the same age, you will know exactly what I am talking about. FF? Not so much. I was much cooler bragging to my friends about finding the Red Ring or Silver Arrows in the second quest of Zelda than getting ZAP! or NUKE spells for FF.

Keep freezing the fire rings so you can focus on the Mother Brain without having to dodge them. There will only ever be like three on screen at a time, so if you can nail two of them you should be okay. You can also try falling off the pipe to the right, then jump back up with a screw attack to take them out if you're lucky. Whatever you do, don't fall off the left side of the pipe, or you're pretty screwed unless you can freeze a fire ring at the right spot to climb out.

I never owned Marble Madness, but my cousin did, and I loved playing it over at his house. I beat it a handful of times, but it was mostly due to chance. I usually had more luck when I played with someone else who would intentionally let me finish first each time (more time bonuses that way), but some areas of that game could really eat up seconds unless you're lucky and get past them on the first try. I did like the music, colors, and sheer amount of innovation in the game though.

I'll add to the praise given by saying it's like playing Zelda brand new again, like we did years ago when we were still learning what to do. Same cool game, different look and feel.
