You'll be happy to hear that the owner/publisher of American Iron Magazine has just rec'd a "Cease & Desist" letter from the City Attorney of Shelbyville, Illinois, demanding that we print a retraction.
Apparently, the comment "And stay out of Shelbyville!" in a calendar entry in July's American Iron didn't sit well w/ the people of that fine town; they can't understand why AIM would tell people not to go there.
Phone calls and letters soon followed. The editor tried to explain to the nice lady from the Shelbyville Chamber of Commerce that it was a harmless reference, he believed, to the cartoon on tv called The Simpsons, but that he couldn't sure, b/c the calendar editor was out of the office.
He said that he told the nice lady that the only thing he knew about Shelbyville was that it was the rival town to Springfield on The Simpsons, to which she replied "Well, the only thing WE know about the east coast is that you're all a bunch of bleeding heart America-haters!"
Well.
The original reference was in a blurb promoting an event called the "Springfield TT & Races" coming up in May in, yup, Springfield, Illinois, only 50 miles or so from Shelbyville. Needless to say, we put up a very sweet retraction on our website calendar; whether we put one in the print mag remains to be seen.
