View Full Version : How we all started...

Here's how I'm pretty sure we all started with fanart: We first saw the Simpsons, and thought, whoa! That's cool! But, while we were showing appreciation for Groening's work, we were secretly filled to the top with envy. "Why can't I do that?" we said to ourselves. So, we stared trying to draw the Simpsons, but, after a mere 7 failed draewings, we gave up. We thought we would never be even close. So, for several months, we didn't draw them. But, then, after all that time, we start again. Determined. After a few months of drawing, 1 or 2 short-lived give-ups, packs upon packs of pencils, possibly an eraser debate, [hey, pink vs. plastic erasers isd a big thing!] After all that, we finally get it. After all our, hard work, it's finally paying off. I'm pretty sure, that's how we all started with this. ;)
i never attempted to draw them before but the one day i was bored so i went to a site where they had brief points and examples on how to draw the 5 Simpsons. i printed them and tried but they were bad (even with the template shapes and lines). That was probably around 2 years ago. mostly in my spare time I draw the Simpsons now (or watch the show--both are good). I can draw Homer, Bart, and Marge without any templates at all (I draw the eyes, then the nose then the ears then fill in the blanks...mouth, hair etc). Lisa and Maggie I can do ok, but I still have to use the circle around the top of their heads to do their hair (only one attempt at trying to draw Lisa's hair unaided ever worked)

I've always had a major problem with feet. Especially bare ones. I just can't make them look 3-D without making 1 leg look freakishly longer. And feet, I always seem to make 1 look smaller when it is facing forward. I basically have problems with dimensional drawings altogether. Oh, and never again will I do sading. No matter how many times I try, I can't get it right.
I started on March 16th, 1999 with two drawings of Eric Simpson--one fat and one skinny--sketched out on a napkin. Sadly, that drawing along with 50 others were lost when I lost my original folder three months later.
Moving on, I was mostly doing single drawings until January 2003 when I started (for a second time) Simpsons Generations. Part one came out in April '03 and Part two came out, after much redraws and delays, in January '06. I'll be doing a few pics here and there, but I want to conclude Generations, part 3 by 2008.

Awww, 2 years? Well, I'm patient. I can wait. Best of luck Jake! Could you just help me with the feet thing?
You actually remember the first day you started? Wow. Maybe I should remember the day I started! Let's see, uh, it was November 19th that I came up with Robby Simpson. I drew him in my notebook when my teacher was grading papers, so he didn't notice. One day, he came up behind me when I was drawing, and when I realized it, I thought I was going to be in trouble for doodling, but he just said, "Those are some nice drawings. Keep it up!" What a relief!
