View Full Version : Simpson Crazy deleted

Yeah. Just logged into the FTP and discovered pretty much the whole site has been deleted. I assume this is a hacking, since we were hacked a few times before. Unfortunately I've lost contact with Ben, the owner of the domain and hosting, and lost my login for the cpanel.
If you had a sub site, let me know the folder (eg ralph for simpsoncrazy.com/ralph) and I can reinstate the folder and you should be able to reupload. This will only be a temp solution until we can get things sorted properly and hopefully make things more secure.

Shit, I noticed this yesterday, I would have notified you but I thought you already knew. To bad.

It's really sad that these hackers have nothing better to do than ruin great sites for no reason. That really sucks. Hopefully you had backups of the content. Good luck in getting everything back, hope to see the site up and running soon

And why would hackers want to ruin Simpsons fan sites, of all things? What a fucking prick thing to do.
Sorry to hear that, Scott. I don't visit sites (other than this one) very much these days, but yours is one of the best around. I've been using my Homer "Shinning" wallpaper since like August or September. Hope you get everything sorted out soon.
i have an old backup of my databases, and pretty much everything on my hard drive. this still sucks, though.

Damn. Hopefuly its all backed up. Is there any chance Ben would just transfer everything over to you since it seems like he's not involved anymore?
that sucks to hear,
one thing i've never understood though is the lack of backup that webmasters have done over the last nine years. i've seen many sites disappear and their content unreturnable! if someone deleted any of my files it would only be a minor inconvenience because i always work LOCALLY and everything would be uploaded again the next day. i update the files on my computer and then upload them. and i've never thought of any other way to do it. if you're updating your files directly from the server its only going to result in tears.

That sucks...Like everybody else says, I hope to see the site up again soon. I agree with Adam on working locally rather than through the server. But either way, it still sucks. Some people just have too much freaking time on their hands.

I have all my content backed up for SW, but in many different places... the consequence of two content providers and years of laziness/bad FTP programs.
Anyways, Scott... I feel tremendously bad, man, let me know if there's anything I can do to help. It's a shame that a few dickheads can cause so much damage to a great thing.

Yeah I have everything on my hard drive, I do the same as Adam and work on files locally (I too never understood editing files directly on the server). I have full access to FTP and would have access to the cpanel if I didn't forget my login :/
I'm in contact with Ben again now, hopefully there is a backup on the server we can use to save my time reuploading everything. And we're gonna get everything more secure so this won't happen again, hopefully.
Cheers for the love ;)

This is the lowest form of hacking. Seriously...go after a bank or something, if you really want to showcase your skills.

I agree with Adam about the working locally thing. I would never update my site on the server, it just doesn't make sense. Glad to hear you feel the same Scott, thankfully all is not lost

wow that sucks. Adma I work over my server I use Dream weaver but when I use it everytime I save a file right to my server it saves it on my computer in the file that it is on the ftp. Its really useful and saves me sometime. Its only good if you have a fast ftp because if you dont, it will take like 5mins to save a page.

Man does that suck. Sorry to hear it Scott.
As with everyone else, I work locally. I generally back up my site every couple of months coz as I get donations and make content its scattered over the place, as I make an update I just download all the files into one folder and delete the old stuff. Gives me time to do nothing as well. ;)

Other than with SQL, it's rather silly to not work locally. You save all of what...3 seconds?

... I've never in my entire web life heard of such a thing. I mean, seriously, I didn't think such a thing was possible for so many reasons. Amazing...
In any case, hope to see Simpon Crazy come back soon.

Simpsons Crazy was back for a while, but now SC, Thats Unpossible etc are all turning up blank.
Is everything okay?

Everything got transferred to a new host, but we are over the disk quota. Not realising this, I tried to overwrite the index page with a newer version...instead it got reduced to a 0 bytes file. So nothing comes up at simpsoncrazy.com. I'm guessing tim did the same at TU (the other subs are up).
However, the rest of the site should work still. From http://www.simpsoncrazy.com/information.shtml you can navigate to the rest of the site. We're working on getting it back up.

Ben said MBB was still backed up, is that there too? Because he kept telling me he'd send me the FTP stuff but hasn't been online forever

um, no, i didn't do anything, broseph.
edit: well, apparently, there was an executable file and some other stuff uploaded to the main directory of TU, as well as a blank index.html file. i deleted that stuff and it's back up. there goes like a week of visitors =\

I looked at the FTP and can't see it. I'll email Ben and remind him about it.
It looks as though the disk quota problem is solved, just need to sort out database connections.

Yeah,I hate that. It happened few times - I found a new forum,I started to like it - and then some hackers appeared and ruined it.

it was sickening that this had happened. It was a great site. Glad to see it back online (with a few php errors at the moment) for the sake of those trawling the internet for a decent (in this case, more than decent) Simpsons web site.

Hey Scott, I just wanted to say thanks for all the effort you've put into Simpson Crazy. You've had to deal with some pretty harsh moments there these past few months. Its a great site you have.
