Right

I got an RaQ 550 for free from my dads work (they where gonna chuck it in place for a new compaq server) waste not want not. I have put a clean install of the os from cobalt in place and running it on my home ADSL line. (1mb) Seems pretty fast and stable. Fingers crossed.

I have plenty of free space and am offering it to anyone who may need it. You can have upto 200mb space and unlimted transfer. I won't host media files.

If you are in need of any hosting, drop me an email at:

spalmer75@supanet.com or post a reply here.

At current the web, ftp, php, cgi, control panel all work fine. demo is here: http://demo.suavedesign.co.uk

Simon

Just out of curiosity, why do you need a rack server to host stuff off a slow DSL line, when you could accomplish the same thing with any old crappy PC? And no media files? What kind of website doesn't have media files?

It was FREE so yes thats why I have a rack sever. It would make loads of sense to use an old crappy pc and not use the RaQ. For me the line is fast enough.

... a slow DSL line ...

what is the fastest dsl that you can get at home in the us?

It depends on certain things, but it's normally up to about 2 Mbps.

And as I said, that's incredibly slow for serving anything. I myself have a 2mbps upstream cable line, but I wouldn't even think about running a server on it. And what simplysimps is offering is something you can get with the hundreds of free web hosts out there, with the difference of them being much faster.

Don't more than most internet service providers use DHCP nowadays? making it nigh on impossible to host from home?

Yes, but most also give out very long DHCP leases, so you get to keep the same IP for months at a time.

Plus there's dyndns and other similar sites that let you have something approaching a useable domain on a dynamic IP.
