What's the general verdict on this veritable mothership of indie music information? Do you read Pitchfork? Does it make you angry?

I have to admit, for all their conceited reviews and general snobbery, I've discovered a lot of great music via the site, and I was just wondering where all the hate comes from.

Just for laffs (http://www.somethingawful.com/fake/richdork/)

yes, i've discovered alot of great music via them too but some of their reviews are just terrible....and their end of year lists always make me cringe in horror. evidently it is cool to like shitty r n'b singles these days...also, they tend to have an incredible bias towards bands that they have links to in some way. clap your hands say yeah for example...good album...not as good as pitchfork hyped it up to be though.

I just think it (and sites like it) are far too quick to declare something the next big thing.

Being completely detatched from the whole indie music scene (it's just not my thing) it seems as though people in the field are in such a frame-of-mind as to discover someone more obscure or pretentious than everyone else first, that they lump praise on bands that may have something unique about them (Look, they're from *place not normally known for good music*) that can be used as an argument for how great they are, when in reality all it is is something that makes them a little different (not necassarily better).

But as I say, I'm just not into indie music on the whole so take it as an uninformed rant.

i've read one too many album reviews from that site that were more centered around information concerning the writer's past relationships and their correlations to previous albums of the reviewed band to ever want to go back there.

either that, or the review was the writer ever-so-creatively pointing out that he is writing his 13th concept-of-a-concept style review and that we should all marvel at his brilliance for doing so.

i can find good music from other sources if i absolutely have to...i can't stand those pretentifucks.

i like pitchfork. with that said, i dont read it every day or even every week, and i'm sure that i dont agree 100% with everything they've ever said ever but its fun to see what they write about albums i enjoy listening to.

point being, no, pitchfork doesn't anger up my blood like it does for some. though pretentifuck is an interesting word, i will say that.

i like pitchfork for the news section and being able to keep up with bands that i actually like. lord knows how many shows i would have missed if i didn't see the dates listed on pitchfork. like kelly, i mainly just read the reviews of albums i already have and enjoy just to see what they say about it. the review section doesn't sway my album buying one way or another.

i just usually look at the "best new music" feature, because its usually something good that I wouldn't normall be exposed to. yeah, they are prententious, but a lot of times they have good descriptions of the music through all the nonsense. i just don't like how they will review new rap and r'n'b, but don't do any mainstream rock. seems fairly arbitrary on the surface, but somehow it gives them some type of "credibility".

I feel the same way.

I go to it almost every day to look at the news. I also read the reviews for albums I'm thinking of buying or have already bought, but I don't put a lot of stock in them. I read allmusic's reviews every time too, but they're no more reliable. Pitchfork is entertaining, but like all review sites, suffers from music being completely based on opinion. For that same reason, I can't see how it could make anyone mad. You know what you may get going in.

you are probably already aware of this, but bigyawn.net is pretty awesome as far as shows in the DC/baltimore area are concerned.

yeah, i check that out from time to time too, but it's hard/annoying sometimes to sift through all that info. on pitchfork, it'll say like "_______ begin tour tonight" or something and if i'm interested in that band i can just look at the dates and see if/when they're playing around here. but i do check that (and the black cat and 930 websites) for things that may slip through the cracks.
