Supression of our Rights/Freedoms

Something that I believe in strongly as evidenced in the South Park Cartoon Wars II thread is the rights we as Americans are given since birth such as Freedom of Speech. To me this includes all forms of expression as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others. Now to different people that means different things, I have a liberal view on when someone’s rights are violated by someone else’s freedom of speech. I believe for the most part we should be able to say pretty much whatever we want. Hateful speech is wrong and racism is despicable and is the scourge of a progressive society. But I do not consider it illegal and would never support any crusade to limit any form of free speech because once you plant the seed of oppression it will only grow with time. As far as racism and hateful propaganda I think we as a society should take a stand of how morally and ethically it is wrong and parents should raise there children teaching them hate because someone is different is wrong. The Patriot Act infuriates me so much because it violates our right of privacy and is the seed of what I worry could be an ongoing trend toward the limitation of many of our freedoms. They say it is to stop terrorist threats I support our country stopping legitimate threats to our nation but not by suspending our freedoms because (now this sounds cliche) but that is when the terrorists win. What makes the United States of America such a great nation is the freedoms we are given. I see no reason for an act such as the Patriot Act which eliminates the need for warrants when they are easily obtainable when needed. Another issue I would like to bring up is censorship, I believe as Americans we are too “conservative” a culture at least we project that to the rest of the world as it seems American society likes to think of its self as the defenders of morality yet why are so many people still poor in this country (will refrain from going into a rant over raising taxes for now). I do not believe in censorship in any form if its suppressing beliefs or opinions. (This is excluding hateful or racist ideas because they also contribute to the continued cycle of ignorance). I just wanted to get some of that off my chest. I think the United States or even the world could be made so much better if we could just take right steps instead of limiting free thought.

Yes he should be able to speak out all he wants, I mention that but I think as a society we should point out that it is absolutley wrong.
