I'm not sure if this should go here or in Media Discussion, so please move it if it's not relevant.

Ricky Gervais has bypassed MG by not inviting him as a star on his comedy "Extras", after being allowd to pen a Simpsons ep:

It doesn't really surprise me - MG wouldn't be recognised by a UK audience. I'm not sure how well known he is in the US. It would've been interesting to see him appear, though and I hope this means Gervais might still get to write another Simpsons episode.

Aw, poor little guy. I think Gervais should return the favor and let Matt guest star. Matt's a pretty funny guy, after all...

I don't know how that's possible. The Simpsons seems to be just as popular, if not more, in UK as it is in the US.

But would, if Groening appeared on TV screens, people immediately think, "Hey, he's the bloke who created The Simpsons?" Also, Extras bases its comedy on demeaning celebrities. If the audience doesn't know Groening as a person, how would Gervias be able to make fun of his character? He is known, but largely as a name.

I don't think Gervais wanted to purposely hurt MG's feelings. My guess is, Gervais didn't even know that MG wanted to be on the show. But you know, nobody really knows Sam Jackson as a person, and he was on the show, so I don't see what harm having MAtt on the show would do.

He put Les Dennis of all people on the show but couldn’t return the favour to Matt Groening, that’s crazy. I guess we won’t be seeing another Simpsons episode from Ricky Gervais any time in the future.

Its not like he had to play himself, there were other characters in extras besides the stars. Still who know Ricky might read this article say "shit didn't know he wanted to be in it" and give Matt a call, if they haven't started filming yet it could happen.

He doesn't seem an ideal choice since he isn't a movie star or really a well recognized face, but it would have been cool for him to have a cameo.

Aw, poor Matt. His new playmate wants to play with somebody else. Well, he's always got...erm...Al Jean?

what bullshit. on two levels. a) i'm no fan of extras but gervais is writing fiction, not a talkshow. i'd like to think he's writing the show based around what would be interesting as comedy/drama, not based around what guest stars he can get on it. and b) this is completely sensationalistic, ridiculous reporting. groening was obviously specifically asked about it, and the only reply he could give was "no, he didn't ask me", because thats fact, and being the conversational, friendly MG we know and love he added an offhand aside about him actually having real-life experience as an extra in the past. there's nothing about him being "hurt" or "feeling snubbed". it's not like he issued a public statement saying "how dare he not ask me to appear in his shit show! a plague on ricky gervais' house!"

Hmmmm...

Ricky Gervais' Answering Machine: Hi, uh, yeah it's Ricky, and I don't suppose you were able to reach me, so just leave a message at the beep, and I'll get back to you when I can. Thanks.
[Beep]
Matt: Hi, uh, Ricky, what's up? That's good, that's good. So anyway, I don't know if you noticed this or not, but I was looking at the list of guest stars for this season of extras, and I, uh, I noticed my name wasn't on there[nervous laugh]. I don't know if this is a mistake or maybe you forgot, but I just, . . . I thought we had a deal, Rick! Personally, right now I feel, what's a good word for it, snubbed! Snubbed by your actions! . . . So anyway, if you just wanted to add my name or anything, that would be great. Yeah, okay, thanks a lot, bye.

Seriously though, I don't think Gervais was trying to snub him or anything, just he didn't realize Matt wanted to be on the show. And come on people, do you really think Matt Groening is actually really hert by this, he was just lightly poking fun abot it. I hate damn manipulative articles like these. That said though, I think it would be cool to have him on even if I have never seen an episode of extras, but almost anything with Matt is awesome.

Mmmmm....it sounds like a misunderstanding with the media jumping all over it like monkies as usual.

If it were to be intentional...that'd sure be pretty low of the man. But I really doubt it is.

Indeed it does. Still, it's a bit rude of Mr. Gervais though, the least he could do is ask.

Well, this may be a cult, but I don't think the The Simpsons is a cult TV show. Something like this (http://imdb.com/title/tt0138704/) would be cult (well, it's a movie, not a a tv show, but whatever). My local video store has a cult section, and believe me, The Simpsons aren't in it.

Oh, and Nebuchanezzar, I've been meaning to ask you:

You have this http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/1535/250pxcongored13ei.png in your sig, and it says, "I can post a complex chemical formula too..." What do you mean by too? Who else has one?

To be honest, I don't know why I didn't close this thread the moment I first saw it, given just how shitty it is. Maybe I thought people would approach a gossipy "story" from a place like hollywood.com a little more skeptically, especially after a few other gossipy celebrity stories posted here had been thoroughly debunked. But if people are still willing to buy into the whole "snubbing" story, even after Jafar's post, then it's just too stupid to leave open.
