Honestly, I'd rather them just concentrate on the characters they have. I always felt that an increase in guest stars led to a laziness in writing, because instead of fleshing out existing characters or coming up with stories based on them, they started doing stories based around the guest. Plus it's always hard to care much about a one-time character (a failing of The Day The Violence Died for example, imo). Springfield has more than enough fodder to keep the writers going, they shouldn't have to keep drafting in more lazy story material.

I think guest actors are good when they voice a character on the show, like Dustin Hoffman, Danny DeVito, Christina Ricci, Winona Ryder, Jon Lovitz, etc. However, I agree that when they voice themselves, it's usually pretty bad.
I'm going to voice my thoughts against guest actors....
appearing as themselves. Because then the episode has to ass kiss them the whole way. However I absolutly adore it when guest stars don't play as themselves and the character isn't some Mary-Sue.

Joe Pesci and Christopher Walken
Chrisopher Walken has already been established as being too expensive to get in the past.
I wouldn't mind hearing any of the following, mostly playing original characters:
Robin Williams (so much potential)
Billy Crystal
Robert DeNiro
Al Pacino
Chris Rock (who is a big fan of the show apparently)
Harrison Ford
Billy West
Sean Connery
Morgan Freeman
Johnny Depp
Eddie Murphy
Mike Myers
Antonio Banderas
Michael J. Fox
David Letterman and Paul Shaffer (rare case where playing themselves would be better.)
John Cleese
Michael Palin
Rowan Atkinson
KISS (Gene Simmons wrote a THoH comic, didn't he?)
Jason Alexander
Elizabeth Hurley
Gary Oldman
Jeremy Irons
Alan Rickman
Robin Williams (so much potential)

I Could not make a better List myself haha . One question though isn't S. Connery Dead
I'd Have to add Dave Chapelle, Andy Dick, Will Sasso, Tom Cruise ( he was great in South Park ) ( Just kidding please don't beat me), Kids in the Hall, Family Guy or Futrama Crossover ( Ie the Flintstone meet the Jetsons)
Scorpion McClure

Kids in the Hall
The rest haven't, but Scott Thompson DID appear, in "Three Gays of the Condo"
I'd have to say John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, AC/DC (as themselves), Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Billy West and Mike Myers would all be great guests.
But, of those, I'd have to say that only the four Pythons, Chris Rock and Billy West would probably ever appear (and maybe AC/DC...) . The rule seems to be that the bigger name stars don't appear on the show (Not that that's always a bad thing, but Robin Williams is a fabulous voice talent.)
I'd also like to see Andy Serkis return, but this time with a better role.
Also, Johnny Depp has said that he would love to do the show (about a year ago), so I'm sure that the producers would not miss out on the chance to have one of the biggest stars alive on the show...
But, I always find it strange how everyone says that The Simpsons always have the biggest names, but that's not really true. Only a couple dozen of the many guest actors are consistant A list actors , the rest are mostly B-list (not that that's bad though. Many of them are awesome guests.) In the music field though, The Simpsons have had MANY big names, almost all playing themselves (except Johnny Cash and Shawn Colvin).

I would say a lot of them are A-list quality still, but one thing I have noticed is that the A-listers seem to have dwindled as of late. Season 15 and 16 and what's aired/to come from 17 have all had a lot of B-listers, but there's been barely any really big names any more. The only (non repeated) ones that would have even come close in Season 16 in my books are James Caan and Liam Neeson, and Caan was technically from a Season 15 holdover, a season which after the holdovers aired barely had any huge name stars either. And I wouldn't call anybody listed for 17 really big at all, except maybe Metallica. Certainly not to the levels of the Dustin Hoffman's, Danny DeVito's, James Woods', Meryl Streeps', Mel Gibson's, etc of the past.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's kinda big, especially internationally. One (understandable) problem I've had with the show over the years is US-centric guest stars, because their appearances invariably make little sense to me and it's actually rather boring to see bands or celebs you don't know playing themselves.

Yeah, I agree with this in general. I think some one-timers are okay, but a lot of them seem shoe-horned in for the sake of having a guest star, and aren't very memorable (just look at Lily Tomlin's character as a recent example). Self-played guests are annoying, but one timers aren't always much better. But I think if they get people with established voice-acting talent (such as my two examples), it's okay to do it once in a while. They just have to get people who can actually act, and preferably be able to play comedy (which a lot of otherwise great actors can't).
Also, I'm seeing a lot of mentions of Robin Williams....in all honesty, I think that would be a poor idea. He can be a very funny guy, and even a great serious actor in some cases (One Hour Photo, Insomnia, etc.), but I get the feeling that even if he played a "character" on the show, he'd probably just end up playing himself. He has too much of an established persona, and his major voice work so far (such as the Genie in Aladdin) tends to play off that persona as opposed to really establishing a unique character. His random, non-sensical, 88-miles per hour jabbering routine can be entertaining, but I don't think it's suited to a character and story-based show like The Simpsons.
And as for the A-listers discussion, Alec Baldwin is probably about as A-list as you can get right now, even if he's a repeated guest.

Oh god, Larry David! How awesome would that be? I'm not sure about the whole cast of Seinfeld, but I'd also like Jason Alexander to be on sometime. I couldn't imagine Jerry Seinfeld being used well in a Simpsons episode, unless he cowrote the script or something.
Seabrook Moleman

i could see him doing like Danny Divtio did being a relitive or a neighbor but he would need to be in the whole episode not just a snipet. Maybe he could be a Camp instructor and Bart and lisa and milhouse and other school kids go camping for the week. he would be perfect for that ( a kamp krusty / call of the nature kinda episode)
The only guest star i thought was dumb was Thomas Pnchyan ( Sp?) he had a bag on his head and idon;t think said any thing.

what would you see Micheal Richards or Julia Louis Drufuss doing i think that may be funny
Green_Peaness
12-27-2005, 06:57 PM
Well, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was already on the show in the episode "A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love" playing Burns' girlfriend. They wrote her as a bland character; the only way you'd know who she was would be recognizing her voice. None of her talent was used, and it still pisses me off thinking about it :'(. If they can write a script for a female guest star with some humanity (like Marisa Tomei in "A Star is Born-Again"), then it'd be great if she came back.
I have no idea how Michael Richards would do. I'm not sure how versatile he is, and I don't know what kind of character he'd play.

That's why Jay Mohr did the impersonation. According to an interview with him, they asked Christopher Walken to do it, and he accepted, but wanted too much money for the cameo. So they hired Mohr instead.

I totally agree with Veryjammy, the show would benefit a great deal by ditching the whole guest star thing unless they had a good enough reason to do it. There are so many time wasting appearances that would be better used on plot or character development. Hell a huge chunk of jokes that are given to the Celebrity are repeated non stop with each appearance, they all are more or less the same joke, throwing out cheap one liners and or take an unrealistic liking to the family or other side characters, and are mostly forgettable.
It has gotten to a point where I really don't care at all who is going to appear on the Simpson's anymore, the whole thing has lost all meaning, and is there just simply so the staff can meet them. Its like Al jean would walk around at a Celebrity get together and use "hay you should do the show sometime" as a conversation starter.

12-28-2005, 09:24 AM
The biggest problem I've had with a lot of guest stars is that you really have to wonder why the staff would look up to some of these people, I mean clearly it used to be a case of getting people that would be intresting to the staff or showrunner. With the exception of when they fit the episodes concept like Homer at the Bat or Homerpalooza and sort of Krusty Gets Kancelled. But it's been at the point for a while now where they'll take any celebrity that would agree to do the show. Frankly, it's disturbing to think the staff would be excited to mee The Olsen twins. I don't quite buy the ratings grabbing argument because the show is more famous than a lot of people who have cameo's. I think sometimes it's a case of some of the parties involved making money, I think Rog implied that was going on in the N'sync episode and also that a lot of careearism was going on Scully's part for the Mel Gibson episode.
That's not to say that all the cameo's today are bad and that classic episodes aren't without stupid cameo's Magic Johnson for example. especially cringeworthy with Homer's reaction.

Steve Martin (D'oh! He already did it...Well, again)
Dan Aykroyd
Antonio Banderas
Tim Burton
Any other Monty Python and Eric Idle as Declan Desmond again
Perhaps Scarlett Johanson, but this one only playing a character
I can't think of any other one right now.
I don't mind if they play themselves or a character but they should have some reason to appear in the episode (for example, George Plimpton, I don't even know the guy but he had a good role in Spelling, in my opinion. Steve Buscemi had a bad one and I really know and love his work).
One timers can be really good when well handled and a lot of times it's useful to have a new character to introduce a new story. I mean, I am not sure, but that Coach guy in Home Away From Homer I guess somebody said he was a guest star? He was an important character in that story. Lily Tomlin's character was somewhat needed too and the problem is not that she's a guest star, they could have written a better character both having any regular cast voice or having a guest star voice.
I agree with your criticisms, it's only that I think they used to do it pretty well during classic era, except for some of them, so I'd be happy if they just return to that. Sometimes I like to see a band singing songs in the show, if they are in an adequate place to do it and they are not presented as Homer's best friends. Guest stars during the last THOH were especially awful and cringeworthy.

None, reliance on 'guests' makes the show shallow and provides a platform for celebs to promote themselves.
On the other hand, guest stars can give the show more depth, interest, and ratings. I agree that a lot of guest stars weren't used very well, but I did like the use of several former Simpsons guest stars.
Still, I'm not naming any off the top of my head. I think they would be better used from how well they fit in with the script than the "I want this celeb to guest star because I like him/her and want him/her to appear on my favourite show" approach.
I'll add one that wasn't mentioned: Bruce Springsteen. Or as someone (I don't remember who) called him on the Simpsons DVD commentary for Radio Bart, "the great white whale of guest stars."

i think big-name celebrities coming on and playing themselves is just a rating ploy for the show, and a publicity/credibility grab for the celeb, so i don't like it.
however, there can be funny guest star usage. like, i don't know, having Corey (Lisa's celebrity crush) appear and be voiced by Corey Feldman would be funny and would clearly not be a ratings ploy (cuz no one cares about feldman). stuff like that can actually work, but none of this "new kids on the blecch"-esque garbage.

More heads of state and other high ranking politicos. Tony Blair is a good start, but The Simpsons needs a US President, current or previous would be just fine. Wouldn't ya love to see a throwback to the episode where Ford moves in across the street and have the actual President Ford do one line. Just a simple "Hello, how are you?" would be good for me.
How about Governor Schwarzennegger (if I misspelled it, I apologize) having a conversation with Rainier Wolfcastle?
I think former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Cretian (I must be the worst Canadian ever, I probably misspelled his name too, and he was in charge for at least 10 years) would make a good guest. The guys a walking soundbyte.

* John Cleese would be another I'd be dying to see.
* Al Pacino
I'd love to see Hank Azaria as himself ! Gotta love this guy...
Plus there's no reason why he wouldn't appear considering that Dan Castellaneta and Harry Shearer (as Derek Smalls) both appeared in the past. (but then I guess the 3 female actors would deserve it as well...)
And DeNiro and Pacino co-starring in an episode would have a lot of potential in my opinion. That would probably be pretty expensive but that would be worth it. That would be...supoib !

Would they really let Jackson on though? I mean, her name is pretty much synomynous with the Super Bowl disaster now. I think people would just find it funny, and not in the intentional sense.
And for god's sakes, if you're reading this Simpsons producers, do NOT let Whoopi Goldberg on the show. Seriously.
i think the best guest star would be:
The Insane Clown Posse!!!!!!
you gotta be joking, right?
i am not a big guest star fan, but these would be nice:
- al pacino
- michael richards
- john cleese
- robert deniro
they'd all be nice.

What's wrong with Whoopi?

I think if they did more celebrities that played themselves in earlier seasons to play new characters now (like Alec Baldwin did in "When You Dish Upon A Star" and "Bonfire Of The Manatees"), they could extend the life of the show a bit more. If they did this, I'd like to see Ron Howard, Jerry Springer, and Gillian Anderson again (I know she did Scully before but still...)
I'm actually surprised they haven't done many people who aren't American. I think aside from the England episode, and the japanese chefs, they've only done 3: Sam Neill (who is a New Zealander) in 5's "Homer The Vigilante", Mel Gibson (Australian... now there's an idea: an 'Krusty Gets Kancelled"-esque episode with a whole bunch of Aussie actors who have made it big in Hollywood - but being from Melbourne, I'm biased) in "Beyond Blunderdome", and Maria Grazia Cucinotta earlier this season in "The Italian Bob".
