What are ur feelings in regards to Fox sending 'Cease and Desist Orders' to fan created websites? These orders basically threatening legal action against the producers of the unofficial websites. Is it fair or not?

C&D's were all the rage 2-4 years ago. They pretty much quit sending those out for the most part.

it is fair when you think of it from fox's point of view.
it is unfair when you think of it from fans point of view.

D'oheth was the last site to receive a C&D I think, that was 2004. And I don't think there had been any before then for about a year...

What is their problem with fan sites, exactly?

Basically, it's all about copyrights. Screenshots, for example, are considered copyrighted material since they (fox) created them in the first place. And people are re-creating them and putting their name on them. There's a lot more it it than that though.

One of Levin's sites also, I believe, got a C&D, and it was in 2003 or 2004.

I think I'd get a C&D from Matt Groening's personal attorney before I'd get one from Fox themselves.

why don't they send them out any more? ...Mission accomplished? ..Waiting till the lawn grows a bit before mowing again? ...Like a snake, they can wait several years after a big meal before eating again? ....

Snakes can go days without eating, not years. But your point is valid nonetheless. I was going to make a fan site when all this C&D crap came down. I stopped because I didn't feel like dealing with attorneys again. I have had legal problems with computers in the past, and I just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. But I am having loads of fun working at JustSimpsons. I may work on a my own fan site later on down the road.

They never go after new sites, unless they get really, really popular, really quickly and have shitloads of audio/video clips. So I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't be shocked if one shows up some day for TSF asking to remove my videos and songs, although I would hope not. In my opinion, the only sites that have reason to be shut down by Fox are ones offering whole episodes for download. Video clips, audio stuff, pictures, etc. should just be left alone. Fan sites are basically encouraging people to watch the show, it's free publicity even if it does slightly violate copyrights.

Thats the way I see it too. I dont really get why FOX sends out C&D's. Sure, copyright, but they should see it the way we see it too, we're giving the show free publicity, so really if anything they're making more money. At least thats the way I see it.

I can see how Fox would issue a Cease and Desist when there are a ton of audio and video files, and frankly, I agree with them. It is technically stealing money from the company, and it does break numerous federal laws.
