View Full Version : 90s Radio Shit Pop
Dead Nigga Storage
04-10-2006, 05:07 PM
My friend and I are trying to make the ultimate list of 90s pop/radio crap (though not all songs are necessarily bad, nor is "90s" the definite cut off point, we don't care if you're off by a year or 2) solely from the top of our heads. No consulting of playlists, billboard lists, etc! It's just for nostalgia's sake!!
Examples of what we have so far:
Cardigans - Lovefool
Cranberries - Zombie
No Mercy - Missing
No Mercy - Where Do You Go?
No Doubt - Don't Speak
New Radicals - You Only Get What You Give
Quad City DJs - C'mon Ride the Train
Seal - Kiss from a Rose
Sugar Ray - Every Morning
Sugar Ray - Fly
Shawn Mullins - Lullaby
Marcy Playground - Sex and Candy

Stroke 9 - Little Black Backpack
Eiffel 65 - Blue
Coolio - 1, 2, 3, 4

I can't believe no-one's mentioned Britney yet.
And some odd choices of song, although it may just be the difference in UK and US radio. For example Semisonic's Closing Time did nothing over here, but Secret Smile was pretty big. Likewise Sixpence None The Richer's version of There She Goes did nothing but Kiss Me did. And I couldn't tell you how Coolio's 1, 2, 3, 4 went but Gangsta's Paradise was massive.

"Kiss Me" and "Gangsta's Paradise" were huge over here, too. Dangerous Minds probably was twice as big as it should have been because of that song. I just left it out by mistake, but went with the amazing lyrics of "1, 2, 3, 4" instead:
ONE
TWO
THREE
FOUR
GET YOUR WOMAN ON THE FLOOR

I guess I'm just confused as to what this thread is about. It seemed like a random list of pop songs that were big in the 90s and people have mentioned Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls...you''ll also notice that the vast majority of them were of a one hit wonder variety with only a small number of exceptions. backstreet boys, nysnc, britney, etc. were all too commercialized and were sorta "post-everything-i-have-listed-already".

In my opinion, Top 40 radio died in December 1998 when this song was released:
Britney Spears - Baby, One More Time
Even back then I thought that Britney was lame.
Others for the list:
Will Smith - Gettin' Jiggy Wit It
OMC - How Bizarre (I always get these guys mixed up with 80s group OMD. OMC, OMD, OCD, ADD... whatever)
That chick that sang 'Mouth'...
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever
Celine Dion - It's All Coming Back to Me Now
Amanda Marshall - Birmingham
Vitamin C - Smile
I know, they've been mentioned in other posts, but it's my list.

Foo Fighters - This is a Call
Visiting is pretty
Visiting is good
Seems that all they ever wanted was a brother
This can be a secret
We can keep it good
Even all the ever wanting had a problem
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
It’s been too long
Fingernails are pretty
Fingernails are good
Seems that all they ever wanted was a marking
Them balloons are pretty big
And say they should
Ever fall to ground
Call the magic marker
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
This is a call to all
This is a call to all my
Past resignations
It’s been too long
Minicyn is pretty
Minicyn is good
Seems that all the cysts and mollusks tend to barter
Ritalin is easy
Ritalin is good
Even all the ones
Who watered down the daughter

Baz Luhrman - Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen
I'm surprised this song wasn't used for my HS graduation (c/o 99) since it came out around that time especially since Green Day's Time of Your Life was used for the previous class year of my high school. Instead, my class got (surprise...a 90's song!) Desree's You Gotta Be.

our class didn't even have a song. or maybe it did...what the hell did it mean to have a class "song"? did they play it during graduation, or what?

Our class song was pretty much only used for the centerpiece dance at the senior prom. We got to vote on it. It was between The Beatles' "In My Life" or that goddamn song from Dirty Dancing. You know the one. Suffice it to say, Swayze and Jeanie Bueller were burning up the dance floor come May. It later came out that all the popular girls had actually stuffed the ballot box so that that song would win out. Boy, high school is obnoxious.

sounds like our prom where the cheer squad and other such douchebags always made sure to crowd the DJ all night so the same 10-15 songs were played constantly. what a great night.
our grad song was vanessa william's 'save the best for last'

Thats speculation on your part. They have lasted longer than most alternative rock bands, they didn't do it by sucking.

Those are grammy's, they mean something. I dont want to sidetrack this thread either so if you want to discuss this with me do it on AIM.
My Name Is - Eminem was radio shit, first few times you hear it its ok but damn it got overplayed and really isnt that good.

Once again, learn English. You think he's assuming that a lot of people think FF are radio shit. You don't think he's speculating. It means something different.
To add to the anti-Grammy dogpile: Maroon 5 won the Best New Artist Grammy two years after their debut album premiered. They don't even care about what "new" means, much less "best."

First concert I ever went to was Jethro Tull. Ian Anderson sounded like he drank a bottle of whiskey and smoked a carton of cigs before stepping on stage.

Maroon 5 won the Best New Artist Grammy two years after their debut album premiered.
Also, Fountains of Wayne were nominated in that category 7 years after their 1996 debut. They were nominated for an Oscar for That Thing You Do! back in the 90's for crying out loud!

Da Da Da - Trio was from 1982!
500 Miles - Proclaimers was also in the 80s...it was just made popular again coz of the early 90s movie "Benny & Joon"
Here's one I didn't see listed: "Believe" by Cher (I think from about 1998)
Lump by Presidents of the United States of America has yet to be mentioned.

Also, I just read the entire thread and downloaded all the great songs. Which amount to about 30% of those mentioned. I'm not sure if that's a good thing, a bad thing, or merely a thing. Keep it up though.
