This is gonna take some thinking about, but I'll do the thinking as I do the typing - two birds killed, one stone used. Ptcha.

Favourite Characters

1. Mr. Burns - Never, ever, ceases to be hilarious. Ever.
2. Smithers - Despite us being in Season 17, and being aware of issues of his sexuality, we still feel there's a whole truckload about Smithers yet to be revealed... the fact that he remains quietly enigmatic 17 years on is quite remarkable. Plus, he's Burns' straight man, and without him, he'd just be pathetic.
3. Moe - So spiteful and self-loathing, yet so infinitely loveable.
4. Rich Texan - I forget his official name, but this guy is coming on leaps and bounds in recent seasons, having been wheeled out as a background character as early as 'Sideshow Bob Roberts' back in Season Six. 1-2-3-4!
5. Raoul - YeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! How a one-gag character can be so completely and consistently hilarious is beyond me, but I'm not one for caring, particularly.
6. Sideshow Mel - I don't know why I like him, I just do.
7. Chief Wiggum - I am SO glad they increased his incompetence as series went on.
8. Grampa - You need proof?
9. Homer - How a top character list without his inclusion can exist is beyond the ken of me.
10. Lisa - Proof that EVERY society has its pillars, and its intelligence.

Least Favourite Characters
There's very few of these, but the ones that exist are unforgivable.

1. Lindsey Naegle - INTENSELY irritating character I don't even want to give the pleasure of analysing.
2. Gil - The gag is beginning to wear very, very thin.
3. Patty and Selma - Selma has her redeeming features, I guess. But I seriously can't remember anything they've particularly done that's amused me.
4. Disco Stu - Kudos for the crwe for trying to push him beyond just one yawnsome gag in the past few years, but what's done is ultimately done.
5. Jessica Lovejoy - No gags, just remarkable nastiness.

Best character (not counting the Simpson family)
Rev. Lovejoy (We all saw that coming)

Lindsay Naegle. Name one useful thing she did. I even prefer the comic book guy to her.

Best: Homer, Moe, Barney, Lenny and Carl, Professor Frink, Milhouse, Groundskeeper Willie, Ned Flanders, and Mr. Burns.

Worst: I haven't seen any episodes with the Yes Guy or Cookie Kwan whom so many seem to hate, so I'll say that the only character I've ever really hated was the Crazy Cat Lady.

i can see why some people don't like Lisa so much (especially in the later years). her self-aggrandizing superior attitude can be grating even when you agree with whatever issue she happens to be tackling in a particular episode. she's a mouth-piece half the time, and as such, she's annoying.

Why does everyone keep mentioning Jessica Lovejoy? She was only in two episodes (one of those episodes, she didn't even speak). That's like mentioning Garth Motherloving or Frank Grimes in one of these lists.

Anyway, favorites:

Homer Simpson, C. Montgomery Burns, Ned Flanders--three deep, classic, hilarious characters that are all extremely unique and varied.

Least favorites:

Honestly, I'm getting really, really tired of Tress MacNeille, to the point where Lindsay Naegle and any other one-timers voiced by her annoy me from the start. Otherwise, not much to complain about here. The less funny, one-note characters are generally kept to a minimum anyway.

My favourite character is Lisa (obviously), namely because I share quite a few qualities with her, and I can actually understand her as such. I also like Barney (he's funny), Homer (well, who wouldn't?) and Apu (what isn't there to like).

My least favourite...well, I don't know that many I don't like, so I'll just say Helen Lovejoy (no offence to RL). She seems so...arrogant.

Socialite Miss Vanderbilt is the best character EVER. She rocks.
(lady with hat) http://www.duffzone.co.uk/framegrab_script.php?img=dabf16/02012004204733.jpg

I found out who does her voice on the show from imdb.com, its Tress MacNeille. She does awhole bunch of other simpson characters as well.

Non taken. I don't see how a character can be hated for that reason, but since you were stuck for choice...

This is a tough choice for me. The Simpsons is one of the few shows where I can't bring myself to outright hate any character, they tend to be so 3 dimensional like that.

But if I must....from best to least liked...then here goes nothing.

Best:

Lisa Simpson: She's just a great character when used right. Sometimes I think the writers really go overboard with the "little grown up" thing...thats when she loses her charm. But when she's used correctly she can bring out some of the funnest..as well as most emotional episodes in the series. I've always had her as my favorite character, even during Bart-mania all those years ago just because she strikes a chorde with me as a person...that is when she's not written as a whiney, no-humor character...which really just isn't her.

Ralph Wiggum: I think Ralph has so much potential that has yet to be used by the writing staff, that it sort of makes me sad. So many take him for his face value trait of being the random oddball. Thats what makes him fun yes...but I think the writers took that too much to heart and have taken out some of the third dimension that makes him so interesting at the same time. I'm not one of those types that says everything in the series has gone downhill...because I truly don't think its true. Its become a bit unstable in quality yes...but not completely. But one thing I do think has gone down a bit is the portrayal of Ralph. What made him such a memorable character was not only his randomness...but that sort of hidden side to him underneath that thats constantly hinted at. Almost like he's more complex than you think. Thats what made him such a cheer worthy character earlier, and part of what made I Love Lisa such a great episode. He's becoming *too* simple now, dare I say he's losing the thing that made him feel human. I really wish the Wiggum's would be given spotlight for at least one episode in the near future...but regardless he's a great character.

Moe: Even though he's been a bit misused I feel here and there throughout the show I can't help but love the guy. He's just so quirky and unusual...and at the same time a bit pitiful that I can't not like the character. I think his potential bond with Maggie opens up a lot of doors for the character, it shows that side to him you don't see often. I wish that would be looked at closer but even if its not, you can't beat the Flaming-Moe. XD

Homer Simpson: Gervais put it best...he may have his moments where I just want to punch the guy but for some reason...he always seems to become irresistable to like. I don't think anyone will ever be able to figure out why...but in the end Homer's just so hard to hate even when he's being a jerk. Granted...I think the "whiny, jerkass" Homer needs to go completely...but no matter what I've never found myself hating the guy even once. Not even Lisa can boast that.

Chief Wiggum: From the little bits we've seen, I just love the Wiggums. I wish Sarah would get a little more spotlight...but regardless. He's incompetent, and questionable but I just can never bring myself to not like him. The times he does come through are just that memorable, and he seems to genuinly be a nice guy when he's not abusing his power. I mean...he ate Ralph's Crayon sandwich. If thats not dedication to your kid I don't know what is. He also genuinly seems to worry about Ralph often. Whenever Wiggum makes an appearance I know I'll get a good laugh out...even if its not a good episode. Gotta respect the Chief for that.

Bart Simpson: He goes up and down...but I've grown to respect him as a character. The times he comes through for his sister, or his dad, or his mom or whoever are just so memorable. His antics are good and all but thats what makes me like him. Like when he told Lisa that he'd still he her friend even when Milhouse came back...that was so cool of him. He's a greatly well rounded character I think in how he may be a trouble maker...but you sympathize with him as well as find him insanely cool during his good moments. He's a kid with integrity beyond his years I think. I mean...who didn't feel gut-wrenched when he started crying at the end of Bart gets an F?

Mr Burns: Every scene with Burns may take some time to build up to...but Its always guaranateed gold. He's gotten less evil over the years but somehow...he hasn't really been greatly misused ever I feel. He's a very flexible character...both physically and as a character.

I like every character but those most of all. I do particularly like Barney, Milhouse, Nelson, Edna, and Martin (Yeah thats right. He's nice man....). But I love them all...so its tough to point out these guys:

Bad:

Lou and Eddie: Don't get me wrong..I like them by themselves. They make great foil to Chief Wiggum. What I don't like though is how they've been used in later seasons...being the ONLY cops you ever see most of the time. I just don't buy the "they're the only cops" thing, I mean...you do see other cops from time to time. Probably the shaky continuity...but still I much preferred it when the Chief was in charge of a whole typical police force than just...Lou and Eddie.

Kearny, Jimbo, and Dolph: The tall bald one can be rather funny, but in general I think these characters have been greatly misused. I think its sorta interesting how Nelson's technically hung out with Bart and his usual cohorts more than these three....but regardless they've never been something I've cared much more both as characters and how they're used.

Joe Quimby: This is more personal. He has his moments where he does a good thing, and I don't quite hate him...but as a person I just don't like him much. He's necessary, I wouldn't take him out for anything...but I revel in the few times he gets his comuppance. I hope Skinner takes out the trash and takes office one day in the future. XD (Not in the show of course...just...theoretically)

Otto: Otto was funny at first...but I've been finding him a completely useless character ever since season 7. I mean...even Barney has his moments that make it so I can't help but love the guy. Otto just bores me to death.

I noticed that many of you don't like the crazy cat lady.
But you have to admit that she was hilarious when we saw her for the first time in season 9.
However, writters use her too much in recent years.
