View Full Version : Famous Paintings in The Simpsons : An illustrated Guide
As I couldn't find such a thing on any fan site, I tried to make a comprehensive guide about the famous paintings that appear in the show, whether it is as a painting in a frame or as a parody subtly integrated in the scene.
Although I tried to be as exhaustive as possible when compiling this list, I'm sure I've forgotten or missed quite a few of them, and that's why I'm writing this, if you can think of a painting that is not in the list, it would be nice if you could point it out so that I can add it.
Anyway, I spent a lot of time seeking for those paintings so you'd better enjoy... :shifty:

That's a brilliant compilation! How do you spare the time to go through all the episodes so painstakingly? Thanks for posting that - I can't think of any other examples to add right now, but if I do, I'll post them here.
TSP rulez !! This guide rocks, it's so complete !
Good Job Heub, All the movies files are perfect too.

That is simply awesome. My hat goes off to you Heub, incredible collection.
Thank you very much.
While going through many episodes to find these paintings there are a few that I couldn't identify, I'm not really a fan of art and my researches to put a name on them have been unsuccesful.
I have no idea if these paintings really exist or if they've been made up by the animators but some of you might be able to recognize them so here they are :

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/2974/homer6yf.th.jpg (http://img83.imageshack.us/my.php?image=homer6yf.jpg)These two in the background were probably based on existing paintings as they are shown in the museum in Mom and pop art along with many other paintings... (looks like they could be respectively by Monet and Miro but I didn't find anything that looks exactly the same...)
Any art lovers in the audience ?

You're right about that one. It's definitely by Joan Miro. I had to take an art class last semester, and that was one of the examples in the text. I remember it very distinctly. Unfortunately, I sold that book after the class was over, so I don't know it's title offhand. I did a Google search though, and this (clicky!) (http://www.soho-art.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.pl?fid=1124874833&cgifunction=form) was the only image I could find of the particular painting. It might be untitled or something. Those crazy Surrealists.
Anyway, nice selections. I didn't realize how much art has been reproduced on The Simpsons.

awesome.
Thank you Jims.
I visited several sites that show some of his paintings but none of them had this particular one.
That's weird, we would imagine that the Simpsons writers/animators would have picked one of his most famous paintings.
Thanks for the link.

VERY nice list! I've noticed a lot of those paintings referenced, but a lot I had no idea, like the scene in Hell from Bart gets hit by a Car. (I always figured it referenced something)
You should consider submitting it to SNPP. It's in French, but the important part is the pictures.

an incredible effort, young heub. darunia's hat goes off to you. anyways, the above is one of rembrant's self portraits, i am convinced.

Actually SNPP wouldn't put the pics on the site but I made a list of these paintings with their English names (when they exist), I already proposed it but Jouni didn't answer...

Thanks Jesse, I just added it to the page (it's the couch gag for Homer the great and The PTA disband, season 6)
By the way, it's really cool to have you here Jesse, thank you very much for posting on NHC !

I did a little research, Rembrandt painted a lot of portraits but I didn't find any that looked exactly like the drawing.
The closest I found is this one : http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/5492/rembrandt5xo.th.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rembrandt5xo.jpg) It's still not exactly the same...
Is it the one you were thinking about ?
Wouldn't the paintings that were referenced in the Curse of the flying hellfish episode be some of the real paintings that were stolen by the nazis during WWII ?

ah, damn. it was another guy. i'll find out his name soon.
EDIT: it's this guy: Albrecht Dürer
Were you thinking of Albrecht Durer self portrait ?

Yes, that's the one.
Was I wrong?
It's still different from the one in the episode.
Plus it was painted in 1948, after the end of WWII.

Durer was dead throughout the 20th century!
Durer was dead throughout the 20th century!
Actually he died during the 16th century, I misread the date, it was 1498 not 1948 :boggled:
I just found something interesting, Durer also painted several "Virgin and child "...

I think there are a number of references to Rockwell's Freedom from Want. I think it was used in There's No Disgrace Like Home, and maybe Dog of Death, I haven’t scene either episode in a while. It seems like every time that the show has a big meal they parody that painting.

That's a great list, but all I can do is look at the pictures. I don't know about you guys, but it's in french on my computer, and I don't speak French. But even so, that's a great (and very complete) list.
Sorry to bump this but does anyone know if the following painting was based on a real one ?
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/3168/simpsonsseason2disc10fj0.th.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=simpsonsseason2disc10fj0.jpg)http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/7647/simpsonsseason2disc12dy8.th.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=simpsonsseason2disc12dy8.jpg) in Karl's office in Simpson and Delilah (just noticed the animation goof on the second pic, Karl has no mouth)
And several times in the Pedro show
http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/3343/islefilmtt1.th.jpg (http://img110.imageshack.us/my.php?image=islefilmtt1.jpg) from I&S the movie
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/2393/mrplowhv2.th.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mrplowhv2.jpg)From Mr Plow
I'm asking cause I think I've seen it in other episodes too and it seems likely that it could be a copy of an existing painting so if anyone knows let me know so that I can add it to the page...
Thanks

Must've missed this the first time around. Excellent list, Heub!
A suggestion: personally I would prefer to view the list grouped by the actual paintings, rather than by episode (eg put all appearances of the dogs playing poster painting together)
Thanks.

I don't know, a lot of paintings appear only once so I'd still have to arrange those in a chronological way and that would be kind of messy I guess.

He's hiding his epidermis, what did you think ?

I thought epidermis meant hair. Anyways, at least he could look embarrassed or something. Here he just looks kind of zoned out. Very odd  .
But who cares, this is one of the best Simpsons sites around!

I'm not sure about those paintings, but I would just like to comment on how great that guide is. Excellent job.
