Well, I guess it was inevitable, but a swan found in Fife, Scotland died of bird flu. There's no danger to humans in Britain but I hope the poultry industry won't be wrecked.

My chickens and ducks are currently free-range and can be moved inside a run permenantly if the disease spreads, so I reckon I'm as prepared as I can be. However, I hoped it wouldn't get here and it's a blow if we have to keep them inside, especially as Summer's coming.
If the worst happens and they do catch the virus, we've been told we have to alert the Government, who'll come round and gas them all. But for the moment, they'll stay free-range.

^That's extremely unlikely - it would have happened by now in SE Asia.

It was only a matter of time before it got here, really. At least now I can finally finish my 'CANADIAN GEESE ARE LOVE-CHILDREN OF BEELZEBUB' manifesto (circa 1996) and know it's semi-believable (*scoffs* like it wasn't BEFORE?!).

The Health Department has just announced Briatin's first human case of bird flu - in a poultry farmer on the Norfolk farm where 35,000 birds were culled yesterday. They've got the mild H7 form of the flu and symptoms are limited to conjunctivitis, however, this is a worrying development.

I still think this thing's way overblown. I heard on the news that the only way that you can get it is from eating an infected bird (easy to avoid), being in constant close contact with birds (not a problem for me) or sniffing bird shit (not a problem for anyone, I hope).

its way overblown. sure its very near me, about 200 miles away so not far. but then its only people near birds alot. in asia it's unsanitary so they're more prone to catch it. we use everything sterile and make sure everythings clean before we use it, so there's less chance that we'll get it
