The new Red Hot Chili Peppers two disc album Stadium Arcadium is out May 9th. I'm pretty interested to see how it turns out seeing as how double albums are usually hit or miss. You can check out the video for the first single "Dani California" here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUYuNqc0T_g&search=dani%20california).

i like every song on mellon collie. say what you want, but i do.
just reading on wikipedia...
Speaking to MTV News, Kiedis called the album "retardedly painful funk" and said that some songs are just "straightout dirty funk". He added that the Peppers' more melodical sounds as heard on Californication (1999) and By The Way (2002) will be present on the album. He also added that Frusciante's (Guitar) work on Stadium Arcadium is 'his masterpiece'.
Bassist Flea has said "If you don't like this [record], you don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Period."
Engineer Ryan Hewitt talks about his work on the Red Hot Chili Peppers forthcoming double-CD. When asked about the sound of the album Hewitt said "“Everyone's asking me, ‘Are they bringing back the funk?’” Hewitt confides. “All I can say is, ‘Yes.’”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Flea says that Stadium Arcadium is "by far the best thing we've ever done."
that is awesome.
"dani california" is a really cool song. i love the guitar solo from frusciante at the end. his back-up vocals are also very awesome.
If "every song good" is your criterion for a good album, I'm pretty sure your standards are too high.
exactly. i have never heard an double-disc album that has every song that is good on on. though, i am a big RHCP fan... so i might like this album head-to-toe. i'll just wait and see.
this album is going to be an album that i will purchase. they need my support.

bloodsugarsexmagik was by far the best thing they have ever done, and even that album was pushing it in length at 73 minutes. i'm just pretty skeptical about their chances to keep the same pace for two discs.
at the very least though, it will end up being better than that awful, awful cover makes it look.

As far as double albums go, well, i don't know about any truly perfect ones, but the White Album is damn close, as is Yes's underrated Tales From Topographic Oceans. Also, even though they're only 1 disc today, London Calling and Exile On Main Street were double albusm upon their release. Anyway, while I've never been a huge RHCP fan, I doenjoy most if not all of their songs, and I'll probably pick this up. The new single is damn good.

just listened to 'dani california.' pretty great. sounded like a song from californication. which is good. anyways, i'm getting pretty stoked for this now. it's been four years since by the way, which is far too long of a break between albums, but if this is as spectacular as advertised, it will be worth it
yeah, the fact that they actually gave us two new songs on their greatest hits was okay. but a four year break, come on.

I'm not a Chili Peppers fan, but I've heard the new song and it's decent. So I have to wonder about Pitchfork's one-star review today. Seriously, they're just grasping for non-conformity there. Doesn't really explain their love of Beyonce and Cam'ron, though...eh.

I happen to enjoy By The Way alot, but that's mainly 'cuz I got to see RHCP at an album release club gig (in Atlanta), where they played a ton of songs from it.....gave me an instant appreciation for the material. Many good times were had with Mother's Milk & Uplift Mofo Party Plan playing in the background so I'm biased toward those albums, but I still like most of what they've done since then. I'll be getting this one, too....

Samuel L Bronkowitz
04-09-2006, 05:22 AM
I thought they put on a good show that night, though I've heard some hit-and-miss stories about some of their concerts. This particular gig took place right when the album came out, and not many months to a year later like the majority of their other US dates, so for all I know the band mighta just been excited playing the new material. Plus, the venue only held 500-1000 people at the most, so it made for a more "intimate" performance unlike the sheds they're usually booked in.....
George
04-09-2006, 05:39 AM

Well it hits stores tomorrow. It leaked over the weekend, but I still haven't heard it. The AllMusic.com review I read gave it a 3.5/5 and basically said that it was good, but too self-indulgent. I know AllMusic.com dosn't speak for the entire world (both critics and fans), but it's scores are pretty consistant with matching up to both, and I've heard that most reviews of the album generally agree. I realise that a band is always excited about their new work, and at the time, probably will claim it's their best, but with the statements made by the Chili Peppers it seemed like it could have been their best album. Regardless, reviews don't matter, and I still haven't heard the album, so I'm assuming to much by this.
they kinda set the bar high when they said "if you don't like this album, you don't like us" (paraphrasing). i've listened to it a few times, and while it contains a few good tracks ("snow (hey oh)", "21st century", "hard to concentrate" come to mind), it's ultimately bogged down by the fact it's a double cd with WAY too much filler. reminds me a little too much of the foo's "in your honor" which simply was not good.

And they album was pretty good. I heard that it would take some inspiration from their older, funkier stuff, but it was way softer than I expected. The double album thing is a good idea and I love the idea of having more songs, although there is a lot of filler. My favourite songs are Torture Me, 21st Century and, of course, Readymade. John puts in a good performance throughout though. 8/10, fits snuggly between Mother's Milk and By The Way in my best to worst order from the 'R&R every album from your favourite bands' thread. And I'll post it again anyway:

Yes, because the movie "Coneheads" had anything to do with the actual writing and performance of the song.

after a few listens, I settled into this album nicely. Overall it's not as in-your-face as, say, Mother's Milk (although there are a few songs that'd fit on there), but there's a certain type of "creeper funk"-like vibe to it that reveals itself a little more after each listen. Frusciante is the MVP, wearing many different trippy hats...... 4.5/5

yeah...okay....this album is just really, really mediocre at best. nothing new, just a derivitave, low-risk move really.
My favorite is "Hard To Concentrate".
Just picked it up. I must be getting old, a few years ago I'd have been waiting in the morning for the shops to open on release day to pick up the new RHCP or Pearl Jam album. Havnt even got the PJ album yet.
Anyway, so far it seems like a great album. Kind of like a mix of all their previous sounds and a little heavier and more funkier then By The Way, which was also a great album.
As for the lyrics, RHCP have never exactly had lyrics that made whole lot of sense. They were always more about rhyme. Also Dani California is a character they've used in songs before. "Dani is the girl singing songs to me..." on By The Way. She is also the "Teenage bride with a baby inside" on Californication.
i would still like to know how the song actually makes fucking sense.
california rest in peace
simeltaneous release
It actually makes a lot more sense then most Chili songs.
Gettin' born in the state of Mississippi
Papa was a copper and mama was a hippie
In Alabama she would swing a hammer
Price you gotta pay when you pick the panorama
She never knew that there was anything more than poor
What in the world? What does your confidant take me for?
Black bandana, sweet Louisiana
Robbin' on a bank in the state of Indiana
She's a runner, rebel and a stunner
Oh her merry way sayin' baby whatcha gonna
Lookin' down the barrel of a hot metal forty five
Just another way to survive
[Chorus:]
California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show your teeth
She's my priestess, I'm your priest, yeah, yeah
She's a lover baby and a fighter
Shoulda seen her coming when it got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn ya
A little loaded, she was stealin' another breath
I love my baby to death
[Chorus]
Who knew the other side of you?
Who knew what others died to prove?
Too true to say good bye to you
Too true too sad sad sad...
Push the fader, gifted animator
One for the now and eleven for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man was a gunnin' for the quota
Down in the badlands she was savin' the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone too fast...
Pretty straight forward lifestory of the Dani California character and her death. Its the ending of what Chili fans call the Dani Trilogy.
