Been watching this season again recently, and am nearly finished. Despite having seen all these episodes before many times, my newfound more harsh grading system means that there are numerous grade changes.
Simpson and Delilah A
Treehouse of Horror B-
Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish A+
Dancin' Homer C
Dead Putting Society A
Bart vs. Thanksgiving A-
Bart the Daredevil A+
Itchy & Scratchy & Marge A+
Bart Gets Hit by a Car A
One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish B
The Way We Was A+
Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment A+
Principal Charming B+
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? A-
Bart's Dog Gets An F C
Old Money B
Brush with Greatness A
Lisa's Substitute A+
The War of the Simpsons B+
Three Men and a Comic Book A
Blood Feud A
This is a truly brilliant season. In my opinion when it comes down to just pure depth and emotion, season 2 beats any other season hands down. Lisa's Substitute, Itchy & Scratchy & Marge and Two Cars are all firmly set in my top 20, and the two other A+'s easily make my top 50. Either Itchy & Scratchy & Marge, or Two Cars may well currently occupy the number 1 spot. They contain all you could ask for in a Simpsons episode, everything the hardcore fan craves, and then some. Awesome satire, flawless characterisation and powerful emotion. The emotion involved in Lisa's goodbye to Mr. Bergstrom could never be rivalled ever again, even season 7's most heartwarming scenes feel lightweight in comparison (not that I mean this as a knock to season 7 in any way, which is incidentally my favourite season.)
Humour is excellent, something that season 2 doesn't always receive praise for. There are so many great one liners, but generally the humour is very subtle. Infact, I found myself more often than not constantly smiling throughout episodes rather than laughing out loud.
Storytelling was at its very best. I almost found it hard to believe how the writers managed to fit so much into I & S & Marge, and Two Cars in the twenty minutes provided, while still managing to tell a coherent story. Sometimes after watching a season 2 ep it feels as though I have just sat through a feature length movie.
However, there are a few weaker eps in the bunch, usually the weaker ones have a slight season 1-ish "still finding their feet" feel to them. And there are a couple of bland outings (Bart's Dog Gets An F, Dancin' Homer.) All in all though, season 2 is terrific and deserves to be ranked up though with the usual favourites such as 4, 6, and 7. The remaining eps I will watch tomorrow will allow me to place the season somewhere in my season rankings, but I can safely say that it will be in my top four, no doubt about that.

This was a great season to get after season one. The best episodes out of the season would have to be Homer vs Lisa and the 8th Commandment because Homer likes to steal and gives it up, Lisa's Substitute because of the nice Homer/Lisa thing throught the episode and Three Men and a Comic Book because Ive been through that. The worst would be Simpson and Delilah it wasnt great but it had a couple of laugs

Season 2 is definately an improvement over Season 1. I don't think it was nearly as funny as 3 and onward though. As you can see my favorite episode of this season, and maybe of any season, is the blowfish show.

Were those episodes holdovers from season 1? Because I noticed that it seemed a bit out of place with the rest of the season. Dancin' Homer is kind of slow, but the Capital City song makes up for any shortcomings, at least for me. I also agree that the season seems very cinematic in the angles, pacing, and balance of storytelling and jokes. This season never ceases to amaze me, and I rank it first or maybe second from my favorites. Without a doubt though, it has my all-time favorite episode of anything in Lisa's Substitute. The directing, writing, and the acting (a little help from Dustin Hoffman doesn't hurt) are all A+.

This was a season unlike any other. Characters were developed into beings with whom we could identify, sympathise and in case of Mr. Burns, someone we can really loathe yet love at the sometime. This season was where the writer coined that great Simpsons-esque style of satirising an issue in an intellectual yet even-handed and unassuming manner. Most of the satires of this season are among the best complete social commentaries the show has ever produced. Many stories about the characters were told, all of which was wonderfully empathetic. Best of all, this season could tell stories that were very tight and complete in nature. This was also the season which introduced many of gags that would later be used for great humour in the later seasons : extended slapstick, exaggarated movie parodies, hilarious secondary characters and one-timers. And best of all, this season was the epitome of witty intellectual dialogue-based humour. The humour was special in the sense that it wasn't "lol" funny, but you could just enjoy the character interactions and there would always be a smile on your face.

I'm not going to bother with all the ratings, 'cos their all in the region of A+ to B+. The first of about three or four classic seasons. Favourite is Simpson and Delilah.

Overall, in my opinion, definitely a 'good' season. Having just come out of a respectable first season, this period of the show (Seasons 2-4) undoubtedly showed the series beginning to relax into its characters, its themes, and its expectations. A lot of the awkward little bits in S1 (you can't deny it had them, then again, first seasons normally are exceptionally difficult to pull off, perhaps with the exception of Lost :)) have been ironed out, the characters are starting to get established (most notably Homer and Lisa) and the gags are getting better. I'm afraid I'm the sort of person who will only grade 'A' or 'F' if I feel I can't deviate (therefore, if you see my gradings in future, you have permission to choke on whatever you are trying to ascertain nutrition from if an A or F pop up), though I hardly saw fit to dip beneath a 'D' with S2. Not the best, but it's history in progress nonetheless. The winner of the season for me has to be Dead Putting Society, as it's one of the first episodes I ever watched, and one I still smile at to this day. Runner-up, Brush With Greatness, mostly down to Ringo Starr exclaiming "GEAR!".
Season 2 Overall: B-

I hate it when people say the golden years are 3-8 or say Season 2 was rubbish cos the drawings were bad, they weren't funny or Homer's voice sounded bad.
Even today i encountered somebody saying this:
"I thought the first and second seasons were alright, but not my favourites since Homer was suppose to sound like Walter Matthau and it just wasn't as funny as the current voice. They changed it after the 2nd season though. The best Seasons were 3 to 5 imo, where most of the episodes were class."
Got annoyed and set him straight.

Am currently rewatching it at the moment, mind you over the course of 4 weeks or so. Just watched Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment. Had not seen that in years. It has to be close to the best in the season. Haven't laughed that much in a long time. It may push my top 5 for me.
I'm just curious, I would love to rate all the episodes I own. But what criteria do most people use? (A-E) Can anyone give me an insight? I'm new here.
Thanks alot.

Great season, definitely an improvement over Season 1. For emotion, it had Lisa's Substitute and The Way We Was, which were the only two really emotional episodes that I liked any more than a little bit. It also had some very funny episodes, like The War of The Simpsons, Homer Vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment, and Three Men and a Comic Book.
On the other side of the coin, though, I don't think that it was the greatest season. I thought Season 3 was an improvement over it. Even so, it still ranks as one of the best seasons the show had.

There weren't any holdovers from S1. Of course, you might have been joking, but it's hard to tell over the internet.
