View Full Version : NRL/AFL Tipping and Discussion Thread 2006
THE New Zealand Warriors are set to be penalised four to six competition points and fined up to $500,000 for salary cap rorts, dating back to at least 2004, which put the club more than $500,000 over the $3.25 million cap limit.
The club's new management team is blaming the previous administration for secret player payments that have put the team's 2006 campaign at grave risk of becoming a disaster.
Warriors chairman Maurice Kidd told the Herald yesterday that when the management informed him of irregularities they had found, he reacted with "horror, shock and disbelief".
"It pissed me off," Kidd said. "It was brought to my attention and then we immediately brought it to the attention of the NRL. The arrangements in question were made prior to the new administration coming in and we told the league we didn't know how this should be treated. It was a Pandora's box."
Late last year, Wayne Scurrah was appointed chief executive as part of a new administration. But while the new management's co-operation with the NRL will help the club in terms of penalty, it won't stop the league from hitting the Warriors hard. The Warriors revealed the fact they were under investigation by issuing a media release yesterday morning. It was confirmed soon after by a release from the NRL.
It emerged Warriors management had last week discovered what the club described in the release as "a number of potential discrepancies" while preparing for an audit by the league's salary cap boss, Ian Schubert.
The Herald understands that when Schubert previously examined the club's books in November he sensed something was wrong, which led to his scheduling a more thorough investigation.
Kidd, Scurrah and John Hart, the Warriors executive director of football, met NRL chief executive David Gallop, Schubert and other league officials on Monday. The league's investigation will continue, with a result likely next week, but it is clear the Warriors are in big trouble. Gallop added yesterday: "There are significant questions that need answers."
Asked if the Warriors could lose points as well as be fined, Gallop replied: "All clubs know competition points are in jeopardy when breaches are of a certain nature and/or magnitude."
The most infamous salary cap case involved the Bulldogs, who, several weeks before the 2002 finals series, were penalised 37 competition points and fined $500,000 for systematic rorting. The fact this year's competition hasn't even started will be considered when the NRL decides on a penalty for the Warriors.
It would be hard enough for them to start a tough competition on -4 or -6 points, but the club could suffer a financial meltdown if it was penalised right out of the running for the finals, and crowds and sponsors dropped off. The Warriors are doing all they can to co-operate with the NRL, hoping that will have an impact on the penalty.
"I obviously take this very seriously," Kidd said. "And naturally I'm concerned we might face penalties. It's like if you're caught breaking and entering or drink-driving - you have to face the consequences. But, if we have to face the music, I'm sure that if anyone commits an offence there is usually some leniency if you are up front and co-operate."
Asked how big the breach was, Kidd replied: "No breach is minor." Asked if he thought there would be a points penalty, he replied: "I hope not."
Gallop gave Kidd and the club credit for working with the league on the issue. But, at the same time, he stressed the league's rules on the salary cap had to be respected above everything.
"The penalty system that is in place has always given credit for disclosure and co-operation," Gallop said. "But, equally, cap breaches involving secret payments strike at the heart of the fairness of the competition."
Kidd said the coaching and playing staff at the Warriors were "upset, but coping very well".
The NRL could look at the involvement of player agents and players more closely in this case, given the league's new agent-accreditation scheme. The Warriors' odds of winning the wooden spoon shortened yesterday and some agencies suspended betting.
----
not good news. I seriously hope that this gets cleared up before the start of the comp, or else the warriors season is almost over before it begins, being 6 points adrift without a game being played would be very tough to peg back, both on the table and psychologically to the team.
and the competition begins March 10.
SideshowTim

not good for the warriors. hopefully for their sake everything gets sorted out. although really, 6 points is getting off easy considering the bulldogs had 37 revoked for the same sort of penalty.
yeah, but the bulldogs infringement occurred during the year they were punished i think, so stripping them of their points was fair. this is a completely new season with the finances that arew being investiagted part of last year, so only a fine should be invoked, perhaps made heavier to make up for the loss of no points.
SideshowTim
02-21-2006, 11:31 PM
well since the breaches go back to 2004 i think the warriors will probably be fined some points. it's a shame because not all the players are in on it and it can sometimes divide a team. which is the last thing the warriors need at the start of a season.
yeah, i think they will be fined, i just don't want them to be :(.
BREAKING NEWS:
Warriors docked 4 points and $AU430,000, just been announced on radio.
Well, 4 points is a big blow for the team and quit hard to recover from. :(, I just hope they can pull something together this year.
SideshowTim
02-26-2006, 11:19 PM
4 points will be costly if the competition is as tight as it was last year but that is unlikely. the warriors from now need to show some real character and come out and perform well this season. they need to be confident in themselves and not let this get them down.
yeah, i'm really hoping they can pull together and it would make for a great fairytale finish, but I think thats getting a bit far ahead. The Warriors need to concentrate on winning their first two games to try and regain some parity with the other teams.

Does that mean that if they don't win their first game they'll have -4 points on the ladder? Because that would be cool.
And it would also mean theres a team out there that is, at least for the first week, shitter than whoever I decide to support this year. Fuck the Rabbitohs, I need a better team. One that isn't run by Russell Crowe at least.

No, they start the season with -4, so if they win their first game, they will be on -2 ( 2 points for a win)
oh and support a team like manly or something.

the season is closer than i thought. only 10 days to go. i suppose we could start the tipping about a week or half a week before round 1. can't wait for it, i love the starts of the footy seasons.
if we can't be bothered renaming the thread we can just use the afl 2006 thread for tipping i suppose.
I'll PM a mod to get the AFL thread renamed to something, but what ? DIU's idea in the AFL thread was good.

Wasn't it going to have Super 14 as well? So maybe "Aussie Sport Tipping Thread 2006 (AFL, NRL, Super 14)" or something.
SideshowTim
02-28-2006, 03:24 AM
since we already have the super 14 one going and there's only 3 people doing it i think we should just keep it seperate and like last year just have the thread dedicated to tipping and discussion for nrl and afl.
the media is really getting on the warriors back here, steve price denying that it was his contract that was in question too.
people have been dicussing the possibility of legal action against mick watson but i doubt that would happen.

we'll have the same rules as last year, 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and if you forget to put your votes in, you get all the away teams for the upcoming round.
edit: ryan you forgot to put your vote in for the dragons/tigers game.
yeah same rules is good.
i'm looking forward to it. good to see we have a couple more people this year.

last night the reigning premiers got up 24-15 over the dragons. it was a lovely way to kick off the season with a nice tight one being decided by a try in the final minutes. benji marshall played superbly and bought out a stunning pass when it was really needed. the hopes of wests this year lie in their centre pairing again.
yeah pity that benji is now out for five weeks with injury.
i really hope the warriors can get up and win tomorrow, i think if they don't win at least 1 of their first two, its gonna be a loooooong season

well round 1 has finished and there were some surprise results. the cowboys gave the broncos a belting and in doing so beat them for the first time in brisbane. the raiders beat manly which was strange because many though the raiders would be spooners. anyway, this weeks results were:
tigers 24 def. dragons 14
knights 25 def. eels 6
panthers 24 def. bulldogs 22
raiders 27 def. manly 14
storm 22 def. warriors 16
cowboys 36 def. brisbane 4

Depends on the club, really. Most of the time its the newbies they want to put in the main team, mixed in with some old 'experienced' players.
And in case anyone missed it, Geelong won by 8 points after the Crows lead for all of the match, except when it mattered.

On a semi-related note, browsing through the computer system at work to see what products i could get in for my section, i discovered NRL and AFL supporter balloons for every team. They're big foil balloons with a one-way valve so they stay inflated, cost around $4.50. I ordered a few different team designs in, have to see how those go.

It was pretty massive when Mal Meninga captained the raiders and they won the final in 94, but since then it hasnt really been that big. The raiders will still pull a nice crowd when they play at home though.

god damn roosters....too inconsistent :(
yeah they have been a bit like the warriors so far, one week they look great and the next poor. interesting to note that if the warriors hadn't have been docked 4 points they would currently be sitting in 10th and not 14th.

well there is one side they'll definitely finish ahead of this year...souths. they have been pitiful as always...
yeah well i don't think they should have been readmitted to the NRL after they were kicked out. they are plain awful and really don't look like getting better.
with the NRL at the moment most games are quite unpredictable with any team capable of beating any team in any given match, apart from the rabbitohs.
with the gold coast team being admitted next year i don't see it getting any better for the rabbitohs in the future.

only one more loss to equal the knights record of 13 straight losses. it's a bit of a joke really. they are playing the broncos next weekend and i can't see them winning that. it'll be pretty funny if they go through the whole season without winning. being a roosters supporter, i have no sympathy for south sydney at any point.
and the swans made it 6 in a row in canberra today against the kangaroos. came back very strongly in the last quarter with the wind against us.
i have zero sympathy for the rabbitohs, and i expect them to lose next week too.
Pfft, the kangaroos can go to the gold coast for all i care.
neither i don't think the rabbitohs should have been re-admitted in the first place.

broncos always start playing crap around this part of the season.
Yeah and they never seem to fully recover, always around 6th place at the end.
also i hear on the radio that the anti-tampering law is probably gonna go. while its disappointing, no-one sticks to it anyway.

Souths must go. David Gallop (ceo of nrl) has to make the decision, he's made some tough ones in the past (docking the bulldogs of points, handling player indescretions) but this is one that must be made. I couldn't really care if a movie star owns them, they need to go. They don't have the fanbase they think they do. Look how many people turned up yesterday. They're crap. They sign one or two solid players each year, but nothing ever happens. They are always getting dicked. 66-0 is an absolute hiding. I wouldn't bet against a bigger score before the year is out.

Yeah that and also they give 3 teams byes during origin weeks (the main sydney teams and queensland teams) so that they aren't effected too much by having their star players out.

i think it would be better, since we have no byes next year, if we take the weekend before origin off so that teams don't miss their star players like they normally do. it would make for a much fairer competition and would also allow teams the rest they'd normally get.
yeah i hope they do that. would also give the other players a chance to refresh.

and the roosters...finally. if we win every single game from here on in we're in with a slight chance of making the 8.
the warriors are in with a slight chance too, but losing in GPET last week wasn't good and we should have beaten the eels, we played awfully though. they should win against the bye this week, 2 valuable points.
SideshowTim
07-16-2006, 11:53 PM
those 4 points might come back and bite the warriors in the backside later in the year. it'd suck for them if they missed out on the finals because of 4 competition points. they should be on 18 at the moment which would put them much closer to the top 8. 11th place in fact.
yeah i have a feeling they will finish in around 11th place, same as last year.
at least they won't be as far down the ladder as south sydney [/overkill]

good win by the swannies. :) that takes us up to third on the ladder, and with a few winnable games coming up we should cement that spot and have a second chance (hopefully we won't need it). we're hitting good form close to the finals which is great news. hope we can make it 2 in a row!
i think the cowboys are gone from the nrl playoff hunt surely after last nights humiliation.
